The President’s Message

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the officers of The Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (ANRC) listed to the left of this column. Each of these individuals was unanimously

elected to his or her position and together they make a wonderful, co-operative team. I also wish to congratulate the newly elected and re-elected mem-bers of the ANRC Board of Trustees, Ted Takvorian, Esq., Nora Tos-sounian, M.D., and Sonia Mardinian, R.Ph. Welcome again to all of you. This is, in addition, the appropriate time to thank our various Committee Chairs for the outstanding jobs they have been doing and I extend my personal thanks and congratulations to Greg Toufayan (Con-

struction Committee), John Vanishkian, (Real Estate), Peter Bonjuklian (Finance Committee), Ted Takvorian, Esq. (Legal Committee), Annette Tamalian-Almond (Personnel Committee),Craig Froonjian, D.M.D, (Ombudsman), Khoren Nalbandian, R.Ph., (Fundraising), Bill Nouri, So-nia Mardinian, R.Ph., and Nora Tossounian, M.D, (Home Care). Let me also take this opportunity to thank all the members of the ANRC who were present at our annual meeting. It was a remarkable event with good news coming from all those who made their reports. We hope to see you again next year with even better news. The care provided at the ANRC not only helps our patients recuperate and function more inde-pendently, but also makes certain they know best how to take care of their personal health needs. Our patients are cared for during their stay by a nursing staff that is second to none. Under the dedicated leadership of Matt Russo, the ANRC’s Administrator, our nurses are able to devote themselves to the well being of each and every patient and do all they can to make them feel at home. Indispensible to this effort is the Director of Nursing Shakeh Bautista,RN and our Patient Coordinator Maggy Petrosian,RN who keep all our RNs, LPNs, CNAs well informed and up to date. Our nursing service is one of the reasons our ANRC once again maintained its four-star rating after a surprise inspection by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services last month. With plans for the Home’s new building underway, the ANRC will further expand its ability to be the best facil-ity of its kind in Bergen County and greater New Jersey. We thank all our Members, Friends, and Supporters who have given their constant support and encouragement, and I would like to extend special thanks to the Friends of the Armenian Home (FAH) for their tireless work and assistance. The ladies of the FAH have always been there for the Home and we are more grateful to them than words can convey. q

Our quest for township approval to our amend¬ed site plan began to unfold before the Emer¬son Land and Uses Board this past quarter on July

21st and September 1st.. While neighbors’ objections were being voiced aloud intermittently to deter progress, it was the Arme¬nians who were once again being attacked for their advancement. Gripesfromneighborsaboutincreasedtraffic, noiseand additional storm water damage to area homes were easy to come by. However, one complaint in particular that evening occurred numerous times, stirring my emotions and fortifying my convictions: Quite a few of the grumblers cried out, “They haven’t paid taxes!” When township residents rebuked us by hollering this battle cry, I felt that our nine Founding Mothers were being maligned. Our founders had little when this home originated but we grew over the years, caring for thousands within this commu-nity, with noble, self-sacrificingdedication. Many times over, it was done without pay back then, and still occurs to this very day. Now, our 68 years of charitable service were being narrow-mindedly dimin-ished. The protests are not based against Armenian eth-nicity or religion this time around, but similarities do exist between this battle, the past of our home and

“They Haven’t Paid Taxes!” the Armenian history. As a medical facility, we too can be viewed as intellectuals to some degree; it’s apparent. Highly educated physicians, nurses and therapists, as well as other accomplished professionals up to and in-cluding our Board Members, are routinely here. Addition-ally, negative propaganda has been vented with false and misleading claims through a small local newspaper. Public opposition is being rallied and the Armenian way is being viewed as

a threat to the welfare of many once more. Ultimately, the “se-lect” group of people would like to eradicate the problem. Does this sound familiar to you? Thankfully for us and unfortu-nately for them, the rule of law and order will prevail this time. Support for our cause has been

recognized by the renewed prevailing legitimacy of our operation, as well as the potential for improved com-munity services and the character of the people behind our history. The matter of Armenians and taxes paid should not be used as a means for criticism. Converse-ly, it should hold a rallying point for us all. q

ANRC Elects Four New Members at the Annual Meeting

“Our founders had little when this home originated

but we grew over the years, caring for thousands within this community, with noble, self-sacrificing dedication.”

LLast month at their annual meeting, the Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (ANRC) members elected Nora Tossounian, MD; Sona Mardinian, RPh; Greg Toufayan; and Bill Nouri to the ANRC Board of Trustees. They bring good experience from their various disciplines to the Board. At the annual meeting, plans were disclosed on the new building that will replace the current 95 year old structure. A very good team has been formed to carry out these objectives.

While summer is here and we are spending a large

amount of time outdoors, we must always be mindful of one important key to our health: Drink more water.Having a sip or two at the water fountain doesn’t cut it. Each individual is different, but doctors often recommend the “eight by eight rule” of drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to maintain or achieve optimal health. Drinking two 8-ounce glasses before every meal can help dieters shed pounds, likely because the water provides a feeling of being full. Eating foods high in water includes fruits, vegetables, soupsandshakes thathelpfill thestomachandtake longer to absorb than “drier” foods. Drinking water helps the skin remain elastic, giving it a more youthful appearance. Hydration helps your system remove toxins, stay regular, digest food, maintain proper body chemistry and temperature as well as helping to prevent high cholesterol. In short, water keeps you alive and kicking. Pain can be a sign that you’re not getting enough water, too.Thisisduetothefluidsnotlubricatingyour joints well enough to keep them bending and turning smoothly. Drinking H2O before, during and after exercise can also stave off fatigue. When moms tell sick children to lie down and get lots of fluids, they know what they’re talking about. Staying hydrated strengthens the immune system, reduces the risk of infections and even helps protect against heart attacks. So drink up! q

On the most beautiful, picture-perfect day of a after a rainy week, our Hye Doun hosted Farmer Eric Mart and the Traveling Quiver

Farm Animal Show on Friday, August 12th. Taking place under a shady tree on the lawn of the home, the interaction between the residents, guests and employees was amazing. Animals small and large were available for the residents to see and pet. The farm brought a variety of farm animals including baby chicks, bunnies and goats as well as a donkey, one turkey and one sheep. Guinea pigs could be found, and a few ducks frolicked in a makeshift duck pond. A hen, as well as some roosters played along and a piglet spent most of the visit rooting in the dirt. A little golden rabbit was cuddled by resident Helen Taylor. The love she showed was truly heartwarming. She even asked me to please give her a picture that I had taken, so she could keep it in her room. There was another interaction with a special gobbler turkey. Our Patient Care Coordinator, Maggy Petrosian, held a conversation in Armenian with farmer Eric, giving way to many laughs and smiles. Funding for the Farm Show was provided by the Friends of the Armenian Home (FAH) and resident Barbara Boothby’s son-in-law, Michael Sofia. In The Kitchen

Broccoli, carrots, corn, lettuce, peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes—all healthy vegetables—were

each eaten by at least half of Americans at least once aweek in thepastmonth. That’soneof thefindingsfrom a recent nationally representative survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. The vegetables Americans eat least—artichokes, bok choy, eggplant, parsnips, swiss chard, turnips or rutabagas, and others—also have a wealth of nutrients.

Artichokes

Especiallyhighinfiber, folate, andvitaminK,theyareagood source of magnesium and vitamin C as well. They are a smart option for pregnant women or those trying to become pregnant, and for older adults concerned about blood pressure and blood sugar.

Bok choyAn excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K, they are also a good source of calcium, folate, and potassium. Especially good choice for children and pregnant or menopausal women.

5 Vegetables That Deserve a Second ChanceAlan Fass, Director of Dietary Services

Brussels sproutsAn excellent source of folate and vitamins A, C, and K, as well as agoodsourceoffiber, iron, andpotassium. They are a great choice for children and pregnant women.

Mustard greensAn excellent source of folate and vitamins A, C, and K,aswellasagoodsourceofcalciumandfiber.Theyare another good choice for children and pregnant or menopausal women.

Swiss chardOne cup cooked has more iron, magnesium, potas-sium, and vitamin E than any vegetable listed above. Again, it is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K andagoodsourceofcalcium, fiber, andvitaminE.Itsnutrients are key for growth and immune system sup-port. q

On June 14th the Friends of Grace from the Korean Community Center in

Englewood visited the home once again to conduct dance rituals and song rituals for our residents. The songs were only conducted for kings and queens of times past in Korea. The group was founded on the belief that ensuring good health and independence later in life relies on the efforts of all generations. We kindly thank the Friends of Grace for their years of support.

Back in his prime, our resident Kenneth Buchner was a member of The Blue Chip Chorus of Bergen County. His son, David Buchner, assumed his father’s position along the years and brought the group to the home. Kenneth (seated, photo right) wasted no time and jumped right back in with the group performing alongside.

On June 15th three residents from the home visited the Bergen County Zoo at Van Saun Park in Paramus, NJ. Our zoo trips become a staple for our residents many times throughout the year.
