Ron Harris A Christian mystic of the 14th century, Julian of Norwich, lived during one of the worst centuries of human history, including the black death pandemic that wiped out millions of people, famines, floods, war, and corruption. In her writing, she addresses what she believed to be at the root of suffering–the misplaced idea of God’s rejection. Without this core belief in beauty and sacred worth, we engage in self-and-other-destroying behaviors, inducing further suffering. Contemplative practices invite us into union with the Divine One, healing the wounds of forgetfulness. Opening Hymn “Come Away With Me” TFWS 2202 Centering for the Day: Rev. Ron Harris “Suffering is part of being human, but what makes suffering so soul-destroying is our forgetfulness that God is with us." - Wendy Farley Are you ready... to remember the warmth of Divine presence? Divine Goodness, prepare my spirit to see and be beckoned by the beauty of life. Amen. Silent Centering You are invited to a moment of quiet rest, a time of slowing the pace of your body and mind so that the spirit can settle. Divine Goodness, Holy One, Pause us for this moment, bear us up in this time, hold us for eternity. We offer ourselves in connection with you. We allow ourselves this love from you.

Scripture Reading: Intro: Leader: Beauty occurs in many ways through our rituals. Divina is of Latin and Italian origin, meaning “divine or heavenly.” It is also a variant of Davina (Hebrew), meaning ”loved one.” In this series, we will encounter the Divine Loved One through “Lectio Divina” with scripture, through “Sermo Divina”–the Latin origin of the word “sermon”– and through “Visio Divina”–images, music, and poetry. All of these are portals into a sensate experience of the holy. Some forms will pique your cognitive mind, but you can also allow some to simply wash over you, infusing your psyche and soul with a mysterious sense of wonder. Today we create pauses in our short scripture reading in order to meditate on the flavor of the Psalmist’s poetry so it becomes a mantra that can visit us in our memories when we need to heal the wounds of forgetfulness.

Psalm 16: 7-11 (Inclusive Bible) I praise YHWH, who guides me; even at night my heart teaches me. [pause] I’m always aware of your presence; you are right by my side, and nothing can shake me. [pause] My heart is happy and my tongue sings for joy; I feel completely safe with you, because you won’t abandon me to the Grave; you won’t let your loved one see decay. [pause] You show me the path to Life; [pause] your presence fills me with joy. [Beautiful things are always in your right hand.] (a) [pause] Sermon “Beckoned by Beauty: “We Are Made for the Beloved” Rev. Karla Sheffy
