Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen dissolves into all the body’s fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone. During the dissolve, oxygen can be carried to areas of diminished or blocked circulation, helping the body support its own healing process. In 2008, Dr. Goodman and colleagues found that a single hyperbaric treatment to humans cells lining our blood vessels turns on 8,101 genes in 24 hours following HBOT. If the cells are given another treatment at 24 hours, even more genes are activated.
