RESIDEnTIAL

what's the best deal?

serviced hotel apartments, budget hotels, residential apartments, star-rated hotels… what's the best deal for a resident or would-be resident in al Barsha? what's more, can serviced hotel apartments offer a solid cost-effective alternative to a rented or bought apartment?

well, according to power house properties, an al Barsha-based real estate firm, there is an unusual competition going on between the different options. “it’s true that the availability and emergence of budget hotels dictates, indirectly, on the market performance of residential apartments and villas.

“Our price quotations for our properties definitely depend to some extent on what these hotels charge,” said power house CeO, myles Bush.

where to go? the best rule of thumb, as ever, is the ‘generic’ test: does the apartment suit you (or your family’s) needs, in terms of layout, décor and cost?

help us, rta

amongst the work that the rta has done specifically with schools in mind, we've seen the 'school transport safety Campaign' in september of 2010 and the 'schools without accidents' initiative in October of the same year. But what about a campaign actually targeting the roads immediately in front of the school premises themselves? it's badly needed. a case in point is the traffic-infested area right in front of the main entrance at the american school of dubai (asd) in al Barsha.

here, the only traffic control is a zebra crossing which is always flooded by suVs and vans inching up to the traffic lights that are some 50 metres from the school's entrance. when you add impatient drivers to the mix, pedestrian crossing from the asd main entrance becomes a nightmare.

so, a plea to the rta - can we bring traffic lights right in front of the asd's main gate and generally look at the micro-environment around each and every school?

the first official apple store in the uae opened this week in dubai. it's located in the Virgin megastore in al Barsha’s mall of the emirates and it will be fully staffed with apple 'Geniuses' (apples's own name for highly trained techie staff). the store will have all the look and feel of the now-famous, high-specced apple stores so familiar across the world's most sophisticated consumer markets.

this news should delight apple fans in the region who have had to wait a long time for new apple products to reach the area. tough break, though, for other manufacturers who have been able to enjoy the lack of apple’s presence in the market thus far.

the apple store in dubai celebrated its launch with voucher giveaways for customers purchasing imacs and macBooks. it’s not clear as yet if the ipad 2 will make an express journey over here.

welcome to this week’s edition of hypersun al Barsha. as an extra feature in this issue, we asked you about your plans for celebrating mother's day. the answers are just as moving as you'd expect, and what is especially surprising is how similar the celebrations seem to be from culture to culture. Fascinating - and i promise there won't be a dry eye in the house! we also take this opportunity to focus on the importance of proper traffic controls outside schools - fundamental to community safety. meanwhile, you'll find a good selection of local news and events listed here in this issue of hypersun. if there’s a topic that you want to discuss, please contact me on [email protected] and i’ll make sure to answer you personally.

Brainiac!

in celebration of the ongoing Brain awareness week 2011, Brain & Learning held the dubai Brain extravaganza at the millennium Grand hotel in al Barsha, on march 14th.

the event was intended to raise awareness of the benefits and progress of brain research. pouneh roney, director of Brain & Learning, led interactive Q&a and brain activities, which included brain training demonstrations, brain fitness tips and brain boosting tips. this was a dazzling night, filled with extraordinary brain-power and training demonstrations - all highly interactive and aimed at showing the remarkable power of the brain (which, we were told is drastically underused by almost every single one of us!).

the night also featured speeches from harvard professor Kurt Fischer, the director of mind, Brain and education, and professor todd rose of education and neuroscience.

pouneh told hypersun: “i have been passionate about raising parents’ and educators’ awareness of the latest brain research and how it relates to learning, and i hope that has been achieved today.” all in all, a thoroughly engaging occasion that put its points across with ingenuity and fun.

most of us are well aware of the ‘One Villa One Family campaign, but few have heard of the ‘One Villa One dog’ directive from dubai municipality.

well, for those who don’t know, it’s a directive from the municipality stipulating that residential settings cannot have more than one dog. also, the municipality still maintains its ban on some breeds. you can’t keep, for example, an american Bull dog, pitt Bull, mastiff, Bull terrier, english Bull dog, or tosa......“all aggressive dogs are banned,” summed up an executive from the pet Connection Clinic in al Barsha. “we can’t keep aggressive dogs in residential areas."

ShOUT OUT lOUd Al bArShA!every week, we’ll be asking four al Barsha people - perhaps you see them around the community - for their views on the neighbourhood, their lifestyles , or key current issues. see what you think of their replies.

kateLynnew Zealander - teacher

i stay here with my husband and our son. it's generally a good place to be.

what do you like / don’t like most about the area?it's quiet and safe. and the area is also woman and family friendly. it's amazing how everybody here respects women and children. i already have many friends here in the neighbourhood, which is great.

how does the neighbourhood compare to other areas you’ve lived / worked in? shopping here is much more exciting compared to new Zealand, that's for sure. this place has better shopping malls and shopping is fun. you just can't stop. malls in new Zealand aren't developed to quite this same level. the malls here are also excellent for children, with good facilities. also, i like the way that so many shops will actually offer to deliver things for you - that's a very helpful approach and prevents you from having to

carry huge amounts of shopping.

what do you think of the facilities here in al Barsha - for example, transport? One time i had an emergency so i had to call in the ambulance. it was a nightmare communicating with them without any knowledge of arabic. that's a potential problem people should be aware of. i was lucky that the situation worked out OK.

what are your favourite places in the area, either to go shopping or for relaxing? aprés at the moe. it's a great place.

tell us your story. how does life here continue that story?i first came here with my husband in 2005 on holiday. the place looked so fine and fun. we later decided to come here.

what changes do you see in this neighbourhood? do you like what you see?well, there are a couple of public parks coming up, but i think there needs to be more greenery. this would make the area complete.

akram aBdeL khaLidJordanian, 28 - shop Owner

i've been living here in al Barsha for four years now; it's a case of so far, so good.

what appeals to you most about the area?the place is quiet and everyone around here minds their own business. it feels like a free world, and you can easily get everything that you need. there is also a very relaxed feel here, and many shops and cafes to spend your time in. all in all, a very nice place to be - especially since, after four years, i now know the area quite well.

how does the neighbourhood compare to other areas you’ve lived / worked in? this area offers a good business and residential environment, compared to JBr which is residence and only residence.

what do you think of the facilities here in al Barsha - for example, transport?i think everything is OK. transport is good. with

healthcare, for example, i haven't as yet experienced a big hospital like rashid hospital or dubai hospital, so i can't comment.

what are your favourite places in the area, either to go shopping or for relaxing?mall of the emirates is an obvious one. there are also lots of other restaurants offering arabic foods.

tell us your story. how does life here continue that story?doing business here and being successful were the first things on my mind when i came here. But now i see it becoming a reality because of the continued growth i'm seeing here. the market is expanding everyday, which means that it makes good sense to be here. i really think my future belongs in this kind of place.

what changes do you see in this neighbourhood? do you like what you see?many projects are going on and this means more people and services will come to al Barsha. i think it is a very lively place with a very promising future..

“this is a great hub. it's fairly easy and simple to get to the places you want to go to and we are very well-served here by the metro."

meLissa veigasindian, 25 - hr manager

i don't live here, but i have friends who do. i always come here to visit them. this is always a very appealing place for me to be. the more time i can spend here, the better.

what do you like / don’t like most about the area?transport is cheap here, so it's easy to move around, even if you don't have a personal car.

how does the neighbourhood compare to other areas you’ve visited? i think everybody here is on their own. you don't even know who lives next door. this is a real example of city life and is the only real negative about the area. Other than this, it's very nice here indeed.

what do you think of the facilities here in al Barsha - for example, transport?apart from transport, facilities here can be expensive.this means that it's very diffcult to save for anything and you always

have to watch what you spend every day. however, this is a feature of life here in dubai, and i really can't complain because i like so many of the other attractions.

what are your favourite places in the area, either to go shopping or for relaxing? i don't always go shopping here. i always come here when i am free and spend some time with friends. so, i don't come here for the likes of mall of the emirates, but rather, for the very nice cafe life.

tell us your story. how does life here continue that story? i grew up in the subcontinent and moved to the uK with my family when i was about 13. But in a way you feel safer when you are here in dubai. i feel more at home here, than in the uK. what changes do you see in this neighbourhood? do you like what you see? i have been here for about nine months, but it looks OK. already, there are more big hotels.

Brad kaysCanadian, 27 - media executive

i live here in al Barsha. and although i don't necessarily work here, i always find myself here most of the time, because i work in the teCOm area. For instance, i always have my lunch at the moe, always meet with my friends in one of the hotels. what appeals to you most about the area?well, i think it's quite a quiet place, especially during week days. i don't always come here on weekends so i don't know what the scene is like then.

how does the neighbourhood compare to other areas you’ve lived / worked in? Compared to accommodation in Bur dubai, al Barsha offers better accommodation alternatives, deals and rates. it's much better. what do you think of the facilites here in al Barsha -for example, transport?well, to start with, there's nothing much to improve about the retail side of things. we have

moe and groceries almost within every 50 metres. accomodation is cheaper and cosier. and when to comes to transport, you have three metro stations all alongside al Barsha.

what are your favourite places in the area, either to go shopping or for relaxing?moe is a one-stop centre for me. i can access everything that i need from here. shopping, relaxing, entertainment, dinners...everything.

tell us your story. how does life here continue that story?i think al Barsha has a strategic location and i feel i can work anywhere in the uae, with little stress. this is a great hub. it's fairly easy and simple to get to the places you want to go to .

what changes do you see in this neighbourhood? do you like what you see? the hotel scene. i never thought al Barsha would be as busy as it is today, with so many great hotels. and there's something to suit every budget. also, businesses love it here.

Blue riband qualitywe’re glad to report that Jumeirah College’s inaugural sports day was a resounding success. held at Gems world academy’s aesthetically pleasing Olympic track and field arena, the day is best summed up as sun, sand and sport. the events began with an impressive performance by the 1500m

runners, running full-on for their respective houses. their exemplary display - in addition to ecstatic cheering - set the pace for the day.

in the end, Fihri crossed the finish line in first place with an outstanding performance with Gibran taking second place. unfortunately, despite their ‘never give up’ spirit, sina and majid took third and fourth.

Lights, camera, action! after 6 months, of rehearsing, learning lines, warming up, dancing, costume fittings and promotional performances – raffles international school west Campus - Junior school made history by performing the first school musical “On the radio” at duCtaC theatre in mall of the emirates.

“On the radio” is a story of

how the radio has brought fun and enjoyment into the lives of people throughout the twentieth century. marvelous mike and Jivin’ Judy took their audience from the 1920s, through the great depression, world war 2, the 1950s, 1960s and then finally the 1980s. the show makes a serious point: that the radio has been - and remains - one of the most important tools for shaping the way that society lives, works and plays.

this was a demanding, challenging production and took a huge amount of careful preparation. But it was also truly worthwhile and rewarding. plus, the talent on stage was just unbelievably fantastic!!

had 45 minutes to run as many laps as they could to collect sponsorship for each lap they complete. mattias , a Grade 3 student, ran 9 laps. “we ran in the Fun run to save the earth, we are going to buy trees and plant them outside this school. trees take away all the pollution, and they give us food and oxygen.” eivind, in Grade 4, earned the record for the most laps, 12 times in total. he was so determined that he didn’t take a break for the entire 45 minutes. “i ran 12 laps because i like to run. i also came in first place in the Beach run.” eivind said. “it is important to plant trees in the uae because trees help the air.”

Irented a suite as a serviced apartment in the ramada

Chelsea when the hotel first opened, just over two years ago. i was struck by three things: firstly,

I always feel that the staff in paul Café, mall of the emirates missed

their vocation. they should actually be giving lessons to the staff in other cafes about how to give great

the staff were always trying to be as helpful as possible, and eager to make the new hotel fully welcoming; second, the fixtures and fittings were stylish and of high

service in a super-busy restaurant. in all the times i’ve been here - mainly to eat dinner - i’ve never known the service to be less than prompt, knowledgeable and helpful.

quality – my suite looked great; and thirdly, the management were full of ambition for the future. example: i was regularly given tours around the future site of the nightclub and the spa and gym, and told all about the top equipment that was on order. now, all of this was two years ago – an eternity in hotel timings - and i'm glad to say the planning has since become the reality. i returned recently to find the ramada Chelsea has become a fully-equipped complex, with no less than four elegant restaurants and a stylish-looking sports café with the plasma set-up you’d expect. i especially like mazz, the arabic restaurant, with a variety of reasonably authentic dishes and prices that are a bit lower than you might anticipate. what strikes me is that i’m still a big fan of this hotel: it's retained its

i’ve even seen the staff weather unnecessarily rude and pushy remarks from other customers with grace and dignity - not easy.

the original paul Café was founded in isle de paris, paris, in 1889. the core concept was to serve deliciously fresh pastries and hot food of good quality, without getting into the realms of anything too fancy. not a bad idea (note: the best restaurants have a single, clear goal and stick to it supremely well) and the restaurant first became a chain and then an international franchise. the setting here is manically busy – you’ll often have to queue for 15 minutes to get a table. i order a cappuccino and a croque monsieur with fries. despite their being 50 other customers, the order comes quickly. it’s accompanied with a warm and delicious serving of bread that i wasn’t expecting -

friendly quality, despite becoming much more grand and sophisticated; i’m still won over by the sheer panache and style of the place. it simply looks great and has become a really welcoming beacon in the heart of al Barsha. plus, whether you're a guest or a visitor, it still represents excellent value.

nice! the croque monsieur is piping hot and tangy and crisp. Good stuff!

some people criticise paul Café for being on the expensive side, and for being a cafe that charges restaurant prices. But the reality is that i find this place a highly-organised treat – better than many eateries in the same mall that charge three times more.
