New -Mexico The Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountains form the southern end of the mighty, snowcapped Rockies. These ranges drain into the Rio Grande, which flows through New Mexico's biggest city,
Albuquerque. The river continues southward to form part of the U.S.-Mexico border. Southern New Mexico includes dusty pastures for cattle or sheep and deserts dotted with cacti, sagebrush, and yucca. Crops often need to be irrigated in this dry land, but farm produce includes pecan nuts, chili peppers, and feed for livestock. The state's economy also depends on the mining of uranium and potassium salts, and tourism.
• A common sight in New Mexico, the traditional chili ristras are strings of bright red chili peppers that are hung out to dry.
