This is what I look like.
• I have four legs and a long tail with a tuft at the end. • I am female (a girl). Males (boys) are called bulls. • I have an udder that gives milk. • Most cows on dairy farms are called Holsteins, and they
are white with black patches. Other breeds can be brown, black, or white.
• Some cows and bulls have horns, and some do not. Some dairy farmers remove the horns from the cows that have them so they cannot poke the other animals.

This is the habitat where I usually live.
• I live on a farm or a ranch, in a comfortable barn. In summer I can go outdoors to eat fresh grass in the fields.
• I live with a group of other cows, called a herd. • The farmer takes care of me and makes sure I have
enough food and water, and that I am healthy. • All the animals on a dairy farm are female (girls) since
they are the ones that give milk. • Cows on a dairy farm are milked two or three times a
day by special milking machines.

This is what I eat.
• I eat mostly dried grass (hay), and alfalfa. • I am herbivorous. I do not eat any meat. • I do not have any teeth in the top of my mouth, so I use
my tongue to help pull food into my mouth. • I have a large stomach, with four parts. Each part helps
me to digest all the food I eat every day. • After I have swallowed my food, I can bring it back inside
my mouth and chew it again. This is called chewing my cud. • Also, I drink a LOT of water every day.

Here are some interesting facts about me.
• Because all dairy cows look alike, they wear a tag attached to their ear so the farmer can tell who they are.
• The tags are computerized so the farmer can see if they have been milked, and how much food they have eaten.
• A baby cow/bull is called a calf.
