I Have a ‘Wow, Cool!’ Mother, Too Writer: Manik Permata

Today is Tuesday. Naya’s class has Morning Talk every Tuesday. This week Naya’s class is learning about Jobs. Last Friday, Mrs. Jenny asked everyone to prepare something to tell about their mother’s job. Naya had a hard time all weekend thinking what to say in class, because Naya’s mother doesn’t have any job, she is just a mother. But Naya’s mother helped her and made sure she’s got something good to tell. In the classroom, Mrs. Jenny asks if anyone wants to come in front of the class to talk first. A few hands rise up, but not Naya’s. She is still not sure about what she is going to say. So Michael goes first. “My mother is a dentist. She works in a dental clinic. When she works, she wears white coat, white plastic gloves and a mask. My brother and I can check our teeth whenever we want, and for free…” says Michael, followed by “Wow, cool” from all other kids. “On Saturday I sometimes visit my mother and see her working. She’s not working on Sunday so I can have her all day on Sundays.” Then Amanda goes next. “My mother works in a hotel. I don’t know what she’s actually doing in the hotel, but she handles a lot of things, and people wait for her to say yes for something they ask. She always tells us when there is something cool going on in the hotel, and we can come to any event in a cheaper price, or sometimes free. We also always get discount for staying in the hotel or for swimming…” says Amanda, followed by “Wow, cool!” from all other kids. “She has one day off each week, but it doesn’t always on Sunday. I wish it was on Sunday when I also don’t have school so we can spend all day together.” Then Levi. “My mom works in a bank. People come to the bank and give their money to my mother and then my mother will keep it safe. Or my mother will give them the money when they ask for it. My mother wears pretty blue uniform when she works. I can change my money into another kind of dollars when I have enough amount of money. Now I have one American dollar, one

Australian dollar coin, five Singapore dollars, and many other coins…” says Levi, followed by “Wow, cool!” from all other kids. “She goes home a bit late, so I always have a late dinner. But she doesn’t work on weekends, which is nice because I have two days with her.” Now Naya feels more nervous than before. Everybody’s mother has cool job, where they get nice things from their mothers’ jobs. But now is Naya’s turn. “My mother works at home. She doesn’t wear any uniform, but she always looks pretty. I see her every day. She is there when I wake up; opening the curtain for me and the sun hurts my eyes. She is there getting my breakfast ready, and I always have different breakfast every day. She is there when I get home from school, ready with the yummiest afternoon snack, and delicious dinner every night. She is there when I have stories to tell, and play princess with me. She used to read stories for me but now I can read, so we read together. She doesn’t have a day off so I can be with her whenever I want” says Naya, and to her surprise, everybody says “Wow, cool!” and applaud enviously. Image Source
