FAQabout our gas tanks
What are our tanks made of?Our tanks are constructed of an exclusive, special-ordered steel alloy.
How are they finished?Our 1932-59 passenger car tanks are painted. Our later-year styles have corrosion-resistant plating.
Who makes them and where are they made?Our tanks are designed in the United States and made in Taiwan by a world class OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) that specializes in making reproductions of original tanks for all kinds of cars and trucks. Our own quality-control specialist overseas the manufacturing.
Are the tanks like the originals?Yes. Each tank has been tooled from original new-old-stock Ford tanks and the original Ford blueprints. The Drake Team’s R&D department works closely with the OEM on these complex projects.
What is the Bob Drake guarantee?Our parts are guaranteed to be free of defects in materials and workmanship. We will refund the purchase price shown on your original invoice, or replace any part found to be defective in workmanship and/or materials, for up to 30 days after the shipping date.
How are our tanks tested?Our OEM facility tests each tank by pressurizing it with air at 30 p.s.i. and submersing it in water to make certain that it has no leaks. (Air bubbles reveal defects.) We also test the tanks a second time in United States by the same method.
What do we do with defective tanks?We destroy any tanks that reveal air bubbles in our pressurized, underwater test. We also dispose of any tanks that are badly damaged or dented in shipping to our facility in Grants Pass, Oregon. We consider tanks with small dents that don’t cause any loss of functionality acceptable.
How do we package our tanks for shipping?We ship each tank in a heavy cardboard box and rarely experience any damage.
How long will our tanks last?Lets face it. The original steel tanks that Ford made have lasted 70 years and more. They can last longer with special care. Our tanks will probably never need to be replaced in your lifetime.

The best gas tanks availableHow should you maintain your tank?We suggest that if you store your vehicle for over two months, that you add a fuel system stabilizer to the gasoline. That will prevent oxidation, which can change the chemical composition of the fuel, leading to gum and varnish deposits. The same advice applies to tractors, lawn mowers, chain saws, weed trimmers, etc. Oxidized fuel may turn darker and can smell sour. We recommend that you never completely drain your tank and leave your system dry. That can cause the rubber components to rot and crack, and it also promotes rust by exposing the inside of your tank to air and moisture.
Do our tanks have the same fuel capacity as the original Ford tanks?Most of our tanks have the original capacity. Some of our tanks have enlarged capacity, which is clearly stated by each tank in this catalog. We can’t add capacity to some of the tanks. Since we cannot raise the top surface of the tank (it would run into the floorboard), any added depth must be on the bottom of the tank. On some models, a protruding gas tank bottom would be visually undesirable. Why do we add more fuel capacity when it’s possible? We want to extend the driving range of your restoration or hot rod and give you more smiles per tank.
How are our tanks mounted? Our 1932-48 gas tanks mount like the originals—between the outside frame rails—using Ford’s three-bolt system. Our tanks for later Fords, Mercurys and Pickups also mount exactly like original.
How do you remove the old tank?1932-34: Simply unbolt the tank and slide it out the back of the car.1935-48: Unbolt the tank and slide it to one side to clear the frame rail. Lower the tank at an angle and slide to the side to remove.1949-Up: Some tanks use strapping bands. Unbolt the bands and lower the tank.To install a New Tank reverse the above procedures.
What are the important features of our tanks?
• HoseConnection: As previously stated, our tanks are copies of Ford’s originals with properly designed necks: cast-steel threaded style, or rubber-hose connection style.
• Shape: We copied every bump, groove, twist and turn to make it just like the original Ford.
• FuelLinePick-up: Most of our tanks have the original location for the fuel pick-up as well as the correct size. Refer to the catalog for more details. On some of our tanks we’ve designed a larger fuel line pick-up that can be sized up or down, according to your gas line. (Larger lines are required for fuel injection.)
• FuelSenderHole:It’s located in the original location and uses the up-to-date Bob Drake 99A-9275 stainless steel sender for 1936-59 Ford cars. Our sender hole also accepts VDO, Stewart Warner, and Classic gauge kits with senders. (see page 15 to learn more).
• DrainPlug: Most of our tanks have the correct drain plug in the same location as the original Ford.
• Baffles:If the original tank had baffles, so does ours. (see individual listings for styles as noted).

Bob is shown assembling his first reproduction chrome item, the 48-18416 locking gas cap as featured within an article in Ford Life Magazine’s May-June issue of 1973. Bob was new to the world of manufacturing and quickly learned the principals of die-casting, chrome plating, component sourcing and marketing. He first offered these at $19.95 and sold hundreds. After suddenly realizing the huge demand, Bob increased his component orders which lowered his cost considerably. He decided to lower his price to $14.95 and refunded the difference to all his previous locking gas cap customers. Today this cap is still among his best selling items.

At left are two locking gas caps from Bob's collection. They were made by Standt who also made them for Atlas, a division of Standard Oil Co.
Standt was the exclusive supplier of locking gas caps to Ford. While these caps at left have the same main body as our 01A-18416 copies of the original Ford units shown above, the slide-cover for the keyhole was totally different. Ford's was much smaller and had a stylish thumb-lever, and are the only reproductions available being correct for a true Ford restoration. Beware of swap meet copies.

Important Note for using Aftermarket Gauges:When purchasing a complete gauge set, the manufacturer’s own fuel sender is included, because each gauge maker uses different ohm settings which require using their own specific fuel sending unit.
