Ideas for reading

Learning objectives: using various cues to work out the meanings of unfamiliar words; recognising full stops and capital letters when reading; blending phonemes in words with clusters for reading; blending to read words containing consonant clusters in initial and final positions; interpreting a text by reading aloud with some variety in pace and emphasis.

Curriculum links: Citizenship: animals and us.

High frequency words: been, blue, but, call, do, green, has, here, him, home, just, last, more, much, not, one, red, take, there, this, too, very, wait, want, where, who, will, with, would

Interest words: strange, simply, stare, wild, right, wonder

Word count: 166

Getting started

• Tell the children that this story is about a boy who really wants a pet. Ask

them to read the title and explain what effect the exclamation mark has on

the meaning.

• Explain that you would like to have an octopus for a pet and ask children to

say why this is NOT a suitable pet to have. Can they think of other unsuitable

pets and why they are unsuitable?

• Walk through the book with the children, drawing children’s attention to

the sign on p135 saying ‘Strange Pet Shop’and paying attention to the

illustrations. What sort of pets do you think are in this shop? What do the

pets look like? (strange, funny)

• Ask if they notice anything about the way it is written (it’s a rhyming story).

Do they know any other rhyming stories?

Reading and responding

• Ask the children to read quietly to p151, and prompt and praise reading with

expression. Encourage them to look at the illustrations as they read, and talk

about what the pets are like.

• Ask each child to read a short section aloud, praising self-correction, use of

cues to solve difficult words and reading with expression, taking punctuation

into account.

• Look at the advert on pp152–153 and ask children to say why the boy

decided not to choose these animals as pets.

• Ask the children to say which pet they would pick and why.

G3_volume_A.indb 168G3_volume_A.indb 168 11/05/13 10:37 AM11/05/13 10:37 AM

Returning to the book

• Ask children to pick short sections to read aloud with expression, and encourage

them to try a range of effects. Model more challenging examples before they try,

e.g. the ellipsis on pp146–147.

• Ask the children in pairs to go back through the book to find words beginning

with consonant clusters str and bl (strange, blue) and end with nd and st (find,

just). They can then write these on a wipe board and add any more words they

know with these beginnings and endings.

• Discuss the use of rhyme with the children – how it helps us work out tricky

words and can make reading aloud very funny.

Checking and moving on

• Ask the children to draw and name a strange pet of their own, and make an

advertisement for it.

• Ask the children to practise reading the rhyming story, with plenty of expression.

They could read it to the class or record it on tape.

The Cuddlypud

This pet is very cuddly.
