DID YOU KNOW?

Like many inventors, Bette Nesmith Graham did not grow up expecting to be an inventor-she

had her sights set on becoming an artist. Born Bette McMurry on 23 March 1923 in Dallas, Texas she dropped out of high school at the age of 17 and man-aged to get a job as a secretary at the Dallas law firm even though she couldn’t type [the firm later sent her on a secretarial course].She married Warren Ne-smith in 1940 and two years later. on 20 December 1942,she gave birth to Mike, who would later find fame as the guitarist for pop group The Monkees.

The Nesmiths divorced after the Second World War and Bette, now a single parent, began working as secretary to W.W.Overton at the Texas Bank and Trust, where she had the brainwave that was to make her fortune. She noticed that the bank’s sign writers would simply paint over any mistakes and she won-dered if she could cover up typing errors in the same way. As an artist she was used to handling paint and she mixed up a small bottle of water-based paint to match the colour of the company stationery ; she then began using a watercolour brush to paint over any typing errors. Overton did not object and soon other secretaries began to use her invention which she called Mistake Out.

Nesmith improved the formula to make it faster drying and began mixing ever larger quantities us-ing the electric mixer in her kitchen ; Mike and his friends would bottle it in the garage. In 1956 she of-fered to sell the rights for her invention to IBM, who rejected it.

Undeterred, she set up her own company, Mistake Out Co., and began selling correction fluid herself. After being fired from Texas Bank and Trust, she and her second husband, Bob Graham, devoted more time to the business [ now called Liquid Paper ] and it began to grow exponentially. Nesmith used part of her resulting fortune to set up two foundations for women and when she died in1980 she willed half her estate to charity.

Correction Fluid timeline

c.1951 Bette Nesmith invents a correction fluid that she calls Mistake Out.

1956 Nesmith offers her invention to IBM, which rejects it. She sets up her own company. Mistake Out Co.

1958 Sales reach 100 bottles per month.

1962 Bette Nesmith marries Bob Graham.

1968 Mistake Out Co.is renamed Liquid Paper and moves to a 1,000-square metre factory with fully automated production.

1975 Liquid Paper moves into a 3,250-square metre, international headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Production reaches 25 million bottles per year, exported to 31 countries.

1979 Graham sells Liquid Paper to Gillette for 47.5 million dollars and royalties on every bottle until the year 2000.

1988 Graham dies at the age of 56,six months after selling her business. She wills half her estate to her son Mike and half to charity.

Two Hours Orientation Session on SUGGESTION SCHEME: FLEXIBLE SOLUTION

FOR YOUR BUSINESS NEEDSOrganized by INSSAN Aurangabad Chapter in association with

MGM’s Jawaharlal Nehru Engineering College 6th October 2018

Two Hours Orientation Session entitled “SUGGESTION SCHEME : FLEXIBLE SOLUTION

FOR YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS“ was organized by the INSSAN Aurangabad Chapter on Saturday, 6th Oct 2018 from 3.00pm to 5.00pm at MASSIA Conference Hall, Waluj MIDC, Aurangabad. Twenty different Small Scale Industries (SSI) located across Waluj MIDC Aurangabad were participated in the orientation session. The list of participants from different SSI is given below. The orientation programme aimed at equipping the industry persons with the ideas of Suggestion Schemes for their business needs. The main objective of the programme was to encourage, promote & formulate models for suggestion schemes and to propagate benefits of suggestion schemes among SSI from Waluj MIDC Aurangabad, striving towards excellence through employee involvement.

The orientation programme began with the self introduction session by all participants. The function was graced by the presence of Mr. Umesh Bapat (President INSSAN), Mr. Sudhir Date (Past President & Editor INSSAN) and Mr. Jaiprakash Zende (Executive Member INSSAN). Dr. H. H. Shinde (Chairman INSSAN Aurangabad Chapter) welcomed all the participants called upon the participants to utilize the opportunity and make the orientation more participatory and interactive. Then Mr. Sudhir Date and Mr. Jaiprakash Zende briefed all about INSSAN and also shared their thoughts and expectations from the orientation session. Formal and informal interaction between Managing Council of INSSAN and the industry persons helped in understanding the immediate needs of implementation of suggestion scheme.

Great ideas can come from anywhere, and smart business owners always take advantage of this to improve their bottom line. Growing companies are always open to change, but the challenge is often finding the right direction for the change to go. Putting up a suggestion box, either for your employees or your customers, is one sure way to get a creative mix of ideas to consider. With this view, INSSAN Aurangabad Chapter has taken appropriate measure for the promotion and smooth functioning of implementation of Suggestion Scheme by donating self made Suggestion Boxes to all participated SSI. Students of Mechanical Engineering from MGM’s Jawaharlal Nehru Engineering College Aurangabad has played vital role in design and development of contemporary suggestion boxes which may help for the improvement of the working process in any organization, especially those originations which don’t have employee suggestion scheme (ESS).

Mr. Sajay Vaidya, Jt. Treasurer, INSSAN A’bad Chapter proposed the vote of thanks. Kaizen Drive Inauguration Programmes at RCF Trombay Unit

Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd. (RCF), Trom-bay Unit is one of the first companies which

implemented Suggestion Scheme. This scheme is implemented in RCF since 1965. It is one of the Em-ployee Involvement Schemes in Trombay Unit which utilizes untapped/hidden potential of employees for Productivity and Quality improvement.

Kaizen Scheme was implemented in Trombay Unit in 2011 and it was integrated with the existing Sugges-tion Scheme. At present schemes are operational as ‘Integrated Suggestion/Kaizen Scheme’.

To encourage and motivate the employees at grass root level, Kaizen Drive Inauguration programmes are held every year in various Plants and Departments of RCF Trombay Unit. These drives are inaugurated at the hands of Unit Head and other Senior Managers

(Executive Directors, Chief General Managers, Dep-uty General Managers, Operations Managers etc.). These drives not only act as a catalyst for employee involvement in Kaizen Schemes but also as a visible support of the Top Management for the various Em-ployee Involvement Schemes. These drives are hav-ing focused time durations (couple of months) where in employees can submit their Kaizens through on-line system. However, forum/online system remains open throughout the year for the employees to give their Kaizens/Suggestions.

In the month of November 2018, Kaizen Drives were inaugurated in various Plants of RCF Trombay Unit at the hands of Shri. Ajit Kashikar, Executive Director (Trombay Unit), Shri V. P. Sreekrishnan, Executive Di-rector (Operations) and other Senior Managers.

Kaizen Case Study (RCF Trombay Unit)

Title: Provision of additional slurry spray nozzle in Spherodizer in Suphala Plant This Kaizen case study is about the improvement (production enhancement) done by the employees of

Suphala Plant through the platform of Kaizen Scheme in RCF Trombay Unit (Kaizen given by Shri. Sham Shirshat and Shri. Mayur Patil)

Background:

Suphala Plant is one of the Complex Fertilizer Plants at RCF Trombay Unit installed in 1965. Suphala is a brand name of the fertilizer containing all three primary nutrients Nitrogen:Phosphorous:Potassium (N:P:K) in the ratio of 15:15:15. Suphala Plant ca-pacity is 1500 MTPD (Metric Tonnes Per Day) and

the process is based on Nitro-phosphate technology. Major raw materilas are Rock phosphate, Nitric acid, Phosphoric Acid, MAP or DAP, KCL, Ammonia, Sul-phuric Acid, Associate gas.

Suphala plant is divided into three sections: (i) Re-action section (ii) Salt section (iii) Scrubbing section.

Fig 2: Granulation or Salt Section in Suphala Plant

Spherodizer is the rotating equipment in the salt section where granules are formed from the slurry which is received from the reaction section.

Challenges:

1) Daily production capacity needed to be increased to meet the market demand of NPK (15:15:15) Fertilizer.

2) The maximum Production was 1600 MTPD on consistent basis against seasonal requirement of 1800 MTPD.

3) Slurry spray in each Spherodizer with single Slurry spray nozzle was maximum 13 m3/hr which was equivalent to production rate of 1600 MTPD.

4) If we increases the spray above 13 m3/hr in single nozzle, following consequences are faced:

Page 16: i2i Bulletin - Welcome To Inssaninssanindia.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/INSSAN-Bulletin-Oct.1… · Shirish R.Kale-Director, 9910338770, packaidelhi@gmail.com. Vinit A.Tiwari-Director,

• Improper atomization and hence increasedscaling inside Spherodizers shell.

• Improper drying and hencemoremoisture inthe final product.

• HighersizeofgranulesaboveallowablelimitsofQuality as per FCO Norms.

• To control the granule size, feeding morequantity of KCl into the system which is costly.

• Withincreasedspraywehavetoincreaseinlettemperature of hot air which resulted into melting of recycled fine granules resulted into reduced recycle quantity than desired one.

Solution/Improvement Carried Out:

In order to increase the slurry spray and plant pro-duction, above aspects were studied thoroughly and it was suggested to install double spray nozzles in Spherodizer with the following modifications.

• Provide an inclination of around 25 degreesto the top slurry nozzle instead of keeping it horizontal. This helps in avoiding the the inter

mixing of sprays of two nozzles.

• Increase the length of the lower nozzle sothat material will not get accumulated to fines conveyor duct.

• Change theorientationofboth thenozzles sothat they are not one above the other.

Suggestion Leads to Creation

Whatever you can imagine, you can make it possible it comes later to think whether it is feasible

Small or big things are relative Factor that matters is how much you are creative

Some critical things are genuinely tender Your one suggestion can create a wonder

Flourish your ideas and do present them Who knows the whole world is looking for the same

Well, we all know the laws of inertia and energy Let them flow, modify and shape rather than worry

Thousand failed experiments do not guarantee you the next However, the one that succeeds will compensate for the rest
