Time Flies! It doesn’t seem ten minutes since the kids were breaking up for summer and here we are, the nights are drawing in and there are signs of Christmas everywhere! Autumn’s a favourite time of year though, with its rich colourful landscapes dominating the surrounding countryside, and you can sense the children’s heightening anticipation of Halloween and Bonfire Night!

Don’t miss the Rainhill Music Festival this week – there’s something for everyone at this fantastic event, and a round of applause also goes to the Rainhill Civic Society for arranging what should be a fascinating exhibition of 40’s Rainhill at St Ann’s Millennium Centre on November 5th.

Our next issue delivered into this area will arrive on the first weekend in December, so if your school, church or community group is organising a fundraiser for Christmas, then just email the details to [email protected] and we’ll give you some free publicity in the magazine! As always, this edition of Local Life is brought to you by the support of our advertisers; so if you enjoy your Local Life, please give them your support!

Until then, take care!

Clocking OffClocking Off, the last ever exhibition at Prescot Museum has just opened to the public so don’t miss out! 34 Church Street has been the home of Prescot Museum for almost 30 years, during which time it has evolved from the Museum of Clock & Watchmaking into a museum devoted to the heritage of Prescot.

The museum will be moving from its current base to a new purpose-built space within Prescot Shopping Centre in spring 2012, and so the final exhibition at Prescot Museum will be a celebration of the past life of the museum building and the many exhibitions and events held there over the years.

Displays will be full of photographs and documents alongside images of the museum, previous exhibitions, visitors and members of staff. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the exhibition, adding their doodles and memories to the displays as time goes by.

Either help yourself to the materials or take part in one of the drop-in sessions on Saturday 22nd, Thursday 27th and Saturday 29th October. During the school

half term it is the ‘Big Draw’ and you can get involved in activities reflecting Prescot’s past and present. Come along any day between 22 - 29 October and paint your portrait or a local character on the ‘wall of fame’, doodle a futuristic town, scribble on a scroll and much more!

For further information on all the exhibitions please contact Prescot Museum on 0151 430 7787.

Say Hello to Reduced Energy Bills – forever!

A ridiculous headline at first glance and more in keeping with the Sunday Sport than Local Life, but remarkably, it’s true. We’re talking about a Government initiative called Clean Energy Cashback, a scheme which guarantees to pay you (or your business) 43.3p for every kWh you generate for 25 years. The 43.3p is guaranteed, index linked and tax free for the entire 25 years, so the value will be maintained throughout.

The Energy Savings Trust website illustrates that a typical domestic solar energy system could generate the homeowner £1,700 per year. In practice, you could actually make a net profit from generating electricity!

So why are the Government doing this? Well, they have made a commitment to have part of the UK’s energy requirements generated from renewable sources by 2020, so they have offered this generous incentive. They will literally pay you to generate electricity for your own daytime use. That’s an offer so difficult to believe, we‘re going to repeat it. If you generate your own electricity for daytime use, you can give the government the bill!

In a sceptical world where nothing’s free, this all seems rather unlikely, but you can thank global warming, climate change and a political passion for sustainable energy for stimulating this unbelievable offer.

If you are in the position where you have got a few quid in the bank, it’s a no-brainer to consider this option by assessing your property’s suitability to take advantage of this scheme

Page 11: I70_0911_StHelensWest

whilst it is still on offer. Everyone’s situation is different though, so it’s important to get good advice from people who understand the technology and match it to individual need.

Companies have to be MCS registered in order to fit this technology and amongst the first local companies to receive MCS accreditation was DOC Solar Electrical, a well established electrical company, with an extensive knowledge of electrical engineering and installation, run by Derek and Janet Green.

DOC Solar Electrical are at the cutting edge of solar technology and have experienced a huge upload in their solar work since the Clean Energy Cashback scheme, also known as the Feed-in Tariff was launched in April 2010. Prices range from £6,800 - £11,000, depending on your requirements.

First memory you have:I always loved Christmas morning; I remember one year coming down the stairs one year and being

totally made up that I had a spider man tent. When I crawled inside there were loads of presents waiting for me, I loved Christmas!

First school you attended: I went to St Judes Catholic Primary in Wigan, I’m still in touch with a couple of friends I made there. I didn’t enjoy school to be honest; I was caught wagging at the age of six. My friends were older than me, and they weren’t going to school so I decided not to. I make sure I take my kids right to the school door these days so there’s no chance of that happening!

First job you had:I worked as a labourer for my Dad, he was a flagger and I used to sweep up for him, it paid quite well, I used to take home about £15. I remember that I once stood in for one of my mates who had a job cleaning buses. I cleaned one bus, moved it and crashed into the back of another one. They paid me but told me to go home, but luckily my mate got to keep his job!

First car you bought:I bought a 1.6 Escort just after I passed my test at 17. It was pretty quick but unreliable and it didn’t last very long; it kept conking out. It had a great sound system though, so that was all that mattered!

Sean Long

IntroductionSean Long has had an incredible rugby league career spanning nineteen years. He started his professional career at Wigan Warriors after signing from local amateur side Wigan St Judes. After being released by Wigan, a decision that came back time and time again to haunt the club, Sean moved to Widnes where he quickly attracted the attention of Super League side St Helens.

He became a legend at Saints and gained many honours, including three Lance Todd trophies for his performances in Challenge Cup finals. Sean later moved to Hull, but announced his retirement from the game in August. He takes up a new challenge as Coach of Salford City Reds from November.

He currently lives in Orrell with his wife Claire and three children Olivia, Seini and James.

First house you bought:When I first started playing rugby at a professional level, Chris Joynt advised me to invest my money in property so I bought a house off-plan in Standish, which I still own today - cheers Joynty!

First pub or club you visited:I used to go to a bar called Boulevard in Wigan with my mates when I was 16; they sold shots for just 50p! I don’t know how we got in though; we must have looked about twelve.

First record you bought:This would be something by Grandmaster Flash, I can’t remember the name of it though! My tastes have changed a bit since then I listen to bands like Kings of Leon and Kasabian. I like Ed Sheeran as well, I went to see him in concert in Liverpool not so long ago.

First best friend:My first best friend was a lad called Chris Holding, we used to play rugby at St Judes when we were younger. We’re still in touch now and we play golf together quite regularly.

First kiss:My first kiss was a bit weird, I was only seven! Me and my mates were at Wigan baths, and we were jumping and diving in the pool. As I climbed out of the pool, this girl grabbed me and started snogging me and then ran off, I walked home in a bit of a daze!

Last restaurant you visited:We went to Bella Roma in Billinge for a meal recently, it’s quite nice to take the family and have a meal together. I like the food at Holland Hall as well we go there quite a bit.

Last DIY task you attempted:I don’t do DIY, I can put a picture on the wall if I have to but it would look terrible. I’m rubbish at DIY and that’s my excuse!

Last film you watched at the cinema:I watch a lot of films with the kids, the last one film we saw was Rio, about a parrot called Blu. It was quite funny actually and the kids loved it. I know all the kids programmes, Pepper Pig and Ben and Holly, I think I need to get the kids interested in something I can watch!

Last disagreement you had:I don’t really have disagreements; I’m quite laid back when it comes to everyday life, though I’m pretty opinionated when it comes to rugby and how it should be played.

Last time you went shopping:I hate shopping! I will go shopping, but I’m in and out, there’s definitely no window shopping involved.

Last holiday you had:We have a caravan at a park on the way to Fleetwood and I took the kids up there for a week during the summer holidays. My mum also has a caravan up there and it’s great; the kids run about and it’s a real adventure for them.

Last sporting event you attended:I went to watch the St Helens vs. Salford match at the beginning of September, Saints won 36-6. I have just taken a coaching job at Salford so I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to see their game. I also like to go and watch all my old mates, I miss being on the pitch; it’s difficult to give up after nineteen years.

So, following advice from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, the decision has been taken to close the car boot sale until further notice.

St Helens Council’s Estates Manager Steve Littler said: “Public safety is our number one priority and over the years we’ve made a number of changes to the operation of the car boot sale to keep visitors safe. The council is now carrying out a detailed review of the site.”

Village SOSThe recent BBC TV series showed how villages nationwide are using a share of The Big Lottery Fund to revive their village. The next Village SOS series is being planned, and the BBC would like to hear from villages which are interested in taking part. Funding of between £10,000 and £30,000 is on offer to groups and organisations in villages of less than 3,000 people to help them develop their enterprising ideas. Applying is easy – and you have to be in it to win it!

All you need to do is register on the Village SOS website, read the guidance document about what can and cannot be funded and tell all about your enterprising idea, entries must be received by Thursday 20 October 2011. If this sounds like something your village could benefit from please take a look at the website www.villagesos.org.uk

Halloween Hell! The Smithy Heritage Centre in Eccleston is scaring up a treat for you with a Halloween event, which is being held at the centre on Saturday 29th October and Sunday 30th October.

Rainhill in the 40’s

One of the mottos adopted by Rainhill Civic Society is to preserve the past and this is exactly what they will be doing for local residents on Saturday November 5th. The society would like to invite you back in time to experience Rainhill in the 1940’s. If you have ever wondered what life in your village was like before you were born or if you fancy a nostalgic look back at a bygone era, then get yourself down to St Ann’s Centre on View Road between 10am and 4pm and see what is on offer!

The society is encouraging people to embrace their heritage by rewinding 70 years to show a glimpse of life before the washing machine and television. You will be able to peep into Granny’s sitting room where you might see a coal fire burning in the grate or a dolly tub and mangle waiting for the weekly washing. The event will include an exhibition showing various aspects of life in Rainhill during the wartime with memorabilia and maps of the time. Other displays will include stories from local people giving information about their day to day lives and how they managed through the dark days of the war.

Big band music will be the entertainment of the day and there will be activities suitable for children and refreshments available too. If that isn’t enough to tempt you then it’s probably time to tell you that entry to this family day out is free, and with activities to interest all the family you really don’t want to miss Rainhill in the 1940’s. Rainhill Civic Society is a vibrant and busy organisation with some great plans for the future, if you would like to get involved please visit the website at www.rainhill-civic-society.org.uk for more information.

4 Local Gardening Life www.locallife247.co.uk

Poppycock? This year we saw another pretty poor summer.

It got off to a good start but sadly went downhill after that. But don’t let this put you off thinking about improvements to your garden because a garden should be much more than a place to sunbathe. It should be an outdoor room and it provides the view we have from our windows so needs to look good. This is the time of year to be giving some thought to winter structure in your garden as there is nothing more disheartening than seeing plants disappear below ground, leaving behind a brown soggy mess.

I heard at this year’s Southport flower show that Sir David Bellamy is predicting as cold a winter as last year. I would think he knows what he’s talking about wouldn’t you - but then again I believe he has described global warming as “a load of poppycock”, so who knows! In any case the plants you choose to provide your winter structure should be tough enough to withstand it. Over the last two winters we have seen the demise of Phormiums and Cordylines (they look a bit like palms) so if you want these plants in your garden - and who wouldn’t, they are lovely - be prepared to have to buy new ones come the spring.

You don’t just have to go for evergreens to provide hardy winter interest. Whilst the perennial flowering plants disappear under ground to escape the winter cold (they’re not daft are they!) there are some grasses which will

stand tall through all the winter can throw at them and look lovely in winter sunshine and on frosty mornings - try Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine fontane. The Cornus family (Dogwoods) provide colourful winter branches in a range of shades from bright red through to yellow and green. One of my favourite plants for winter structure is Buxus sempervirens - or Box. Low hedges and topiary look lovely with a dusting of frost or snow.

However low the temperature falls this winter, I think Hubby is going to feel the cold - he put the heating on in July!
