Short Course -- in --
Highway Engineering
February 20-24, 1922
University of Illinois Champaign - Urbana
Department of Civil Engineering, Uni versity of Illinois
State of Illinois, Department of Public Works and Buildings, Division of Highways
FOREWORD
Objects. The objects of the Short Course in Highway Engineering are: to bring together the engineers, officials and o~hers charged with or interested in highway improvement for the purpose of studying, discussing, and formulating a solution of the problems that arise in the work; to promote better coordination and cooperation in the road work throughout the State; and to distribute the best technical information obtainable on the subject of highway improvement.
History. The first Short Course was held in January, 1914, following the passage of the ''Tice Law" which marked the beginning of active highway development in Illinois. The conditions at that time made the holding · of a short course peculiarly timely and valuable. Since then the annual meetings have been modified and adapted to meet the ever changing conditions. The "Meents Act" passed by the last session of the Legislature marks another significant step in Illinois' progress in road building. It has brought in new problems and possibilities and consequently the Short Course of 1922 again fills a need for meeting to lay plans and gain information for increased activity.
Speakers. Speakers for the Short Course have been selected from among the members of the· University faculty, the engineers of the Illinois Division of Highways, the county superintendents of highways, and others. The function of
the speakers is to crystallize the new and important features of the subjects assigned so as to lead to logical discussion and definite conclusions.
Discussion. Every speaker is expected to leave time for the discussion of the subject and to be prepared to answer questions. Time for discussion is limited and therefore those· in attendance are requested to think out their questions or statements carefully so as to promote the efficiency of the work and not consume valuable time on non-essentials.
Sessions. All sessions will be held in Room 22 I, Engineering Hall.
The morning sessions will begin at 8:30 and the afternoon sessions at I :oo o'clock.
Each session will be divided into three periods of fifty minutes each with ten minute intermissions and will be run on exact schedule. Those in attendance are therefore requested to be in their places promptly at the times designated.
University Buildings. The various University buildings are open from 7:oo a. m. to 6:oo p. m., and visitors are always welcome. Varidus libraries and museums have other hours as shown by schedule. Special inspection parties may be organized on request.
Room and Board. Room and board during the Short Course may be secured at rooming houses and eating places adjacent to the campus or at the hotels. The Y. M. C. A. maintains a list of suitable boarding and rooming places which may be consulted at any time.
