Good HRM is when you recruit the right amount of staff with the right skills, train them efficiently, reward them and provide the right opportunities for them, all at the right time and at the right cost.
Demographic Change
Demographic changes in population can affect the supply of workforce.
Labour Mobility
There are 2 types:
Occupational Mobility of Labour: the extent to which workers are willing and able to move jobs requiring different skills.
Geographical Mobility of Labour: the extent to which workers are willing to move geographical region to move jobs.
Labour Mobility
• A higher labour mobility helps a country to achieve economic efficiency
• A mobile workforce means that if jobs are lost in one regions, workers are willing to move to find work. This helps to keep unemployment low.
• In developed countries, labour tends to be immobile. Why?
Workforce Planning
• HR depts. Need to forecast the future staffing needs of the business
• They start by conducting a ‘workforce audit’• They then produce a ‘workforce plan’• Workforce planning involves:
- forecasting the number of staff required
- skills required by workers
