    Communism: Everybody is equal. There is an abundance of goodsproduced by machinery rather than by workers labor, so everybody has

    much more leisure time. People take what they need and contribute whatthey can.

    Socialism: Everybody is equal, the class system is brought to an end.Wealth and goods produced by industry are shared out fairly. Everybodyhas an equal entitlement to good housing and decent standards of living.

    Autocrat: form of government in which the political poweris held by a

    single, self-appointed ruler.

    Vladimir Llyich Ulyanov (Lenin)Russianrevolutionary, Bolshevikleader, communist politician, principalleader of the October Revolution and the first head of the Soviet Union.

    Russification: An adoption of the Russian language or some otherRussian attribute (whether voluntarily or not) by non-Russian communities.

    Social Structure of Russia under the Tzar: 80% of the population werepeasants and a small proportion were professional and merchant classes.

    Wittes Economic Policy: Plan to build up Russias industries andgenerate more wealth by making a huge investment in industry to create aspiral of upward industrial growth and the development of railways.

    1905 Revolution: wave of mass political unrest through vast areas ofthe Russian Empire against the Tsar. It included terrorism, worker strikes,peasant unrests, and military revolts. It led to the establishment of thelimited constitutional monarchy, the Duma and the multi-party system.

    Bloody Sunday: A massacre, by the Tsar, in Saint Petersburg, that led tothe 1905 Russian Revolution.

    Grigory Rasputin: a Russian monk who is supposed as having influenced

    on the later days of the Russian TsarNicholas II and his wife the Tsaritsa.Rumor had that he was part of a group that found religious fulfillment andecstasy though sexual acts.

    Kadets: members of a liberalpolitical party in the Russian Empire.

    Bolsheviks: (Social Democrats) Is one part of a breakaway faction ofanother party that came to power in Russia during the October Revolutionphase of the Russian Revolution of 1917, and founded the Soviet Union.

    Mensheviks: (Social Democrats) is the other part of the breakawayfraction.

    Leon Trotsky: was a Bolshevik revolutionary and Marxist theorist. He wasone of the leaders of the Russian October Revolution, second only toLenin.

    February Revolution: Was the first of two revolutions in Russia in 1917.It occurred March 812 (February 2327 Old Style) and its immediateresult was the abdication ofTsarNicholas II and the collapse of RussianEmpire.

    Provisional Government: was the short-lived administrative body whichsought to govern Russia immediately following the abdication ofTsarNicholas II in February 1917. It lasted approximately eight months, andceased to exist after power in Russia was seized by the Bolsheviks in

    October of 1917

    Petrograd Soviet: Was a representative body of the city's workers.

    April Theses: were a series of orders by Lenin issued upon his returnto Petrograd (Saint Petersburg), from his exile in Switzerland. He calledforsoviets (workers' councils) to take power, denounced liberals and socialdemocrats in the Provisional Government, called for Bolsheviks not tocooperate with the government, and called for new communist policies.

    Womans Death Battalion: Womens volunteer unit in hope that the unitwould shame male soldiers into fighting.

    Alexander Kerensky: Was a Russian politician. He served as thesecond Prime Ministerof the Russian Provisional Government until Lenin.

    July Days: Refers to events in 1917 that took place in Petrograd, Russia,when soldiers and industrial workers engaged in spontaneousdemonstrations against the government. The Bolsheviks tried to provideleadership to the demonstrations. The military attacked the peacefuldemonstration and engaged in repression against the Bolsheviks.

    Kornilov Affair: was a struggle between the Commander-in-Chiefof theRussian army and Aleksandr Kerensky in August and September of 1917between the abdication ofTsarNicholas II and the October Revolution

    October Revolution: 1917; Was the second part of the RussianRevolution. It began with an armed uprisings in Petrograd. The OctoberRevolution overthrew the Russian Provisional Government and gave thepower to the Soviets dominated by Bolsheviks.

    Coup detat: Violent seizure of power, usually by a relatively small numberof people.

    Nicolas II: Last tsar of Russia, 1917.
