BM S EMS POLICY In 1997, IBM became the world's first major

multinational to have earned a singleworldwide registration to the ISO 14001Environmental Management System (EMS)

standard. The registration covered IBM'smanufacturing, product design andhardware development operations across itsbusiness units worldwide.

Even implementation became easier for IBMthan some companies may experience, sincewe have had a strong, centralized EMS inplace for over 25 years.

    IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS

1.CONDUCT A GLOBAL GAP ANALYSIS - This gap

analysis revealed that most IBM locationsalready had the "basics" of the elementsrequired by ISO 14001 in place, althoughsome areas of the system could beenhanced.

2.WORLDWIDE EMS MANUAL - The WorldwideEMS Manual defined the company's singleenvironmental policy and environmentalinstructions and practices as being core

elements of IBM's EMS3.COMMON SOLUTIONS were developed and

integrated into IBM's EMS to close anyremaining gaps to ISO 14001

conclusion IBM is committed to doing business with

environmentally responsible suppliers and believesthat, not only can ISO 14001 help a company improveits environmental performance, it can help IBMselect suppliers who have the ability and the

commitment to protect the environment. Although ISO 14001 is not the only way to effectively

manage environmental affairs, and registration toISO 14001 does not itself guaranty outstandingenvironmental results, IBM's experience with thestandard has shown that it, in fact, has providedstrength and consistency to the overallenvironmental posture of the company.
