FINAL REPORT

We have successfully completed the Workshop: “Neurogenesis: Basic aspects and implications on neuropsychiatric conditions” with enthusiastic discussions and presentations by students, researchers and professors.

The Workshop: “Neurogenesis: Basic aspects and implications on neuropsychiatric conditions” take place at the University of Maringá in Maringá, Paraná, Brazil, from 3rd to 5th August 2015.

We received about 49 applications as answers to the announcement of the Workshop (please see list of participants). We had graduate students, post-graduate students, researchers and professors from several Brazilian provinces such as: Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina. From all applications, 25 participants were selected to participate of the seminars that occurred in the afternoon period. The selected candidates presented a very nice letter of interest focusing in their need to better understanding the process of adult neurogenesis in order to include or to propose some related experiments in their thesis’ or research’s projects.

After the opening of the Workshop with the presence of the Rector of our University Dr Mauro Baeso, Dr Rúbia Maria W. de Oliveira (State University of Maringá, Brazil) spoke about the basic aspects of adult neurogenesis. Her talk was followed by Dr Ismael Galve-Roperh (Universidad Complutense, Madrid) and Dr Cilene Lino de Oliveira (Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil), who introduced topics related to neurogenic niches and adult neurogenesis regulation (please see the program below). After lunch the participants had the opportunity of presenting their results in a poster session (poster list below). The abstracts were published in the Anals of Workshop: Neurogenesis: Basic aspects and implications on neuropsychiatric conditions, ISBN 978-85-66182-02-6. In the same day, the 25 selected students were divided in four (4) groups for seminar presentations. Each group had an expert in the field of the seminar to help them with the seminars.

Three participants (Taysa Bassani/Federal University of Paraná, Lígia Mendes Soares/State University of Maringá and Victor Rodrigues Santos/University of São Paulo) were selected accordingly their letters and research projects to present orally their experimental results. The oral presentation occurred before the afternoon seminars when very interesting and productive discussions taken place followed by the consultancy of the experts in the area.

In the second day, Dr Alline C. Campos (University of São Paulo, Brazil) and Dr Lorena Varela Nallar (Universidad Andres Belo, Chile) talked about neurogenesis and neuropsychiatric conditions such as stress and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Roberto Andreatrini (Federal University of Paraná, Brazil) followed their presentations giving us a clinical and translational view of the experimental findings and the importance of the neurogenesis in mania and depression. At night, local students prepared a very nice party with folk music and typical Brazilian food.

In the last day, Dr Gabriel Arisi (Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil) highlighted the morning with an interesting talk about methods of microscopy quantification focusing in stereology and clarity.

After the seminars in the afternoon, we had a quick evaluation of the Workshop and the participants ranked their global experience as positive an informative with clear cut effects in their future scientific works. Please see in attach the pictures.
