3 Updated to 11th July 2018

This publication contains details of rolling stock, as listed on the Contents page, currently operational or stored on the various Network Rail, Preserved and Private railway lines / sites in the UK. All locos are listed in one section. This is due to the now less distinct differences and the frequent changes between operational and preserved / private status we see on today’s railway.

Unless shown otherwise entries are laid out as follows: * most names are listed separately at end of each section with $ beside the number to denote it is named. Where space allows some EMU names are shown alongside number. # denotes fictitious number

Locomotives: (except Cl.01/5 - see section for explanation) No. / [Works No.] - $ Named - Details - Owner - Livery - Pool - Depot / Location - [Prev Nos.] - Name *

Diesel and Electric Units: Unit No. - $ Named - Details - Livery - Operator - Depot / Location - Car Nos. - [Prev Nos.] - Name *

Preserved Diesel and Electric Units: Car No. - $ Named - Details - Type - Depot / Location - [Prev No.] (Unit No.) - Name *

Coaching Stock: No. - Details - Owner - Livery - Operator - Depot / Location - [Prev Nos.] - Name

All codes are listed at the back of this book. In the Depot / Location column, a value in brackets eg (TO) is a storage location.

We have tried to make this book as comprehensive and as user friendly as possible, especially to help newcomers to our hobby, so we hope you enjoy this publication prepared by Inter City Railway Society. Remember we are all volunteers and keeping track of changes then compiling the final book is a non-stop task done throughout the year. Hopefully any errors or typos have been removed during proof reading but some always slip through, so if you have any comments or know of further additions or amendments, please contact us either via:

The following list includes all preserved steam locomotives that were built for and / or were operated by the Big Four and former constituent companies and British Railways. New locomotives eg. 60163 built to replace missing classes or in the case of 9351 what might have been, are also included but only once construction has started on major components. The four former War Department (WD) locos are also included that never worked in the UK prior to being repatriated and given UK identities in preservation ie. 8274, 45170, 90733 & 90775 and these are denoted by (WD) in the area code. The former operating area for each loco is listed with the exception of recent new builds. Replica locos, are also included in a separate section, be they of locos still extant or those scrapped. The status of each loco is included, as locos may be dismantled as part of an overhaul / ongoing restoration or stored in a dismantled state, hopefully helping you find them easier !! As some locos often swap between pre and post BR numbers or other company identities, all are shown where applicable as is a works number if that is the only identification eg [6515]. Note that for special anniversaries / galas some locos temporarily masquerade as other classmates long scrapped, though in the case of 34042 this has been made 'permanent'.

Status Key: Sectioned locos are denoted by #.

A Active (current boiler certificate) S Static Exhibit / Stored O Under Overhaul / Restoration (parts may be at various locations) D Stored Dismantled N New Build - Constructed from scratch or with components from scrapped locos:1014 (7927/48518), 4709 (2861/4115/5227) C New Build - Constructed by conversion of a former donor loco: 2999 (4942), 9351 (5193), 84030 (78059)

LOCOMOTIVE HAULED COACHING STOCK

The following list of all mainline registered loco hauled coaches, except Departmental vehicles listed separately, includes some pre BR coaches (mostly Pullmans) and BR Mk 1-4 and GUVs. The list is in numerical order for easier identification which means some non-passenger vehicles are mixed in with passenger vehicles though the former are mostly in the number series 80xxx to 966xx. Included are DBSOs and DVTs used in top & tail mode with locos on DRS (Cumbrian Coast), CR and ATW services and PCVs used similarly on former mail trains. Several preserved coaches are mainline registered so are listed in this section, in particular those on the NYM (services to Whitby) and NNR (services to Cromer).

PRESERVED COACHING STOCK

The following list includes all preserved Mk 1 - 4 coaches, GUV, CCT & MCVs and inspection saloons built by British Railways. All those in active passenger service are marked accordingly and where known, codes are used to indicate the specific purposes of static vehicles. All other vehicles not coded are stored or under overhaul. Most sites are preservation lines or publically accessible eg public houses / restaurants and book-able holiday accommodation, but those shown with a (Px) are private residential / commercial properties. Where a coach on a preservation line is known to be specifically located or normally based, it is shown in brackets after the location code.

The list is in numerical order with the current number first. Though most vehicles are in type order many vehicles have been converted to other uses / types prior to preservation or since and re-numbering is not consecutive. Several vehicles have incorrect or fictitious numbers denoted by # and many do not carry any numbers. Several preserved vehicles are mainline registered so listed in the main LHCS section.

In attempting to cover these coaches there may be some inaccuracies, particularly with numbering and private locations, so please report any you find.
