Mr. Sobieck’s memory and spirit of his generosity – along with the generosity of so many others – helps us remember not only our mission, but also allows us to keep doing our very best to serve cats and kittens in our community. With the help of kindness like that expressed by the Sobiecks, ICS has been able to accomplish many great tasks this year, including: The purchase of a autoclave medical instrument sanitation device in order to provide safer spay/neuter surgeries for the over 300 stray and homeless cats we help each year; Providing medicine and veterinary care for a number of our shelter’s special needs cats, including ICS “eye health spokescat,” Electro; Offering an educational workshop for community members in August, featuring Dr. Linda Harper, clinical psychologist and author of The Power of Joy in Working with Animals; Finding loving adoptive homes for over 200 cats (and counting) since January 2015; Offering assisted spay/neuter vouchers to over 150 individuals to help reduce pet overpopulation in our community. Our cats are so fortunate to have such wonderful friends, and we hope that you, too, will think of us from time to time, just as the Sobieck family does during the holidays. For the friends of the Independent Cat Society, a no-kill cat shelter Fall 2015 #147

Adoptable cats, great articles, dates to remember, and more inside!

Are You a Member Yet?Many of those of you who read our Mewsletter are active members of ICS, and we greatly appreciate all of our 600+ paid members. But we are always hoping to expand our membership base in order to reach more people in our community, as well as invite more folks to enjoy some of the benefits of being an ICS member, such as:

• Your membership dues (as well as other gifts) are tax deductible.

• Membership enables you to vote at Board elections and on other member-driven decisions.

• You will also be eligible to become a member of the Allegius Credit Union (www.allegius.org); or the Northern Indiana Federal Credit Union (Merrillville or LaPorte branches, www.nifedcu.org).

• In addition to receiving our paper Mewsletter, if you provide your email address, you will also receive a monthly E-Mewsletter to keep you up to date with ICS news and events.

• More members means better access to grant funding for spay/neuter efforts, medical care, and other ICS shelter needs.

• Finally, you’ll have a good feeling knowing you are helping homeless cats and kittens in Northwest Indiana, Chicagoland, and Southwest Michigan find a safe haven until they find their forever homes.

Won’t you help ICS continue its mission by purchasing or renewing your membership today? There are membership levels to fit every budget, and you can even use the clip-and-mail form on the back of this Mewsletter to send in your check payable to the Independent Cat Society.

Want to sign up online? Go to the Membership page on our website, http://www.catsociety.org/membership, and use the link to select your membership level through PayPal.

You may also visit our shelter and personally drop off your membership dues, which also lets you stop and visit all the wonderful cats and kittens. Our shelter is located at 4061 S. County Line Road on the Northeast corner of U.S. Route 6 and County Line Road (Porter and LaPorte Counties) in Westville, IN. Our normal adoption hours are Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Be a member and join your friends!

Several years ago, Mr. Fred Sobieck’s family came to visit the shelter, and enjoyed their time getting to know our loving cats and kittens. They were touched by our volunteers’ dedication to their cause, and hoped that each and every one of the cats would find a forever home.

Unfortunately, recently Mr. Sobieck lost his battle with cancer, but his family honored the generosity that he always expressed in life by giving the money that they would have spent on his Christmas gifts to their favorite charity.

The charity they chose? The Independent Cat Society.

Mr. Sobieck’s memory and spirit of his generosity – along with the generosity of so many others – helps us remember not only

our mission, but also allows us to keep doing our very best to serve cats and kittens in our community. With the help of kindness like that expressed by the Sobiecks, ICS has been able to accomplish many great tasks this year, including:

• The purchase of a autoclave medical instrument sanitation device in order to provide safer spay/neuter surgeries for the over 300 stray and homeless cats we help each year;

• Providing medicine and veterinary care for a number of our shelter’s special needs cats, including ICS “eye health spokescat,” Electro;

• Offering an educational workshop for community members in August, featuring Dr. Linda Harper, clinical psychologist and author of The Power of Joy in Working with Animals;

• Finding loving adoptive homes for over 200 cats (and counting) since January 2015;

• Offering assisted spay/neuter vouchers to over 150 individuals to help reduce pet overpopulation in our community.

Our cats are so fortunate to have such wonderful friends, and we hope that you, too, will think of us from time to time, just as the Sobieck family does during the holidays. Thank you for your support!

President’s MessageEach month, you may have noticed that ICS runs various adoption “specials.” The idea of a special deal on a new family member may seem a little strange, but they serve an important purpose: they draw attention to very special kitties!

While some adoptive families come without many expectations, many often have a certain new family member in mind. It might be that they have a favorite color, or believe that certain types of cats would get along better with the rest of their family. Whatever the case, our adoption specials are designed to help you find and choose the perfect pet for your household.

This fall and winter, we will be teaming up with Best Friends as part of its No More Homelss Pets Network to help you get acquainted with some of our most special cats. We invite you to come by – and tell your friends – during any weekend to talk with an adoption counselor. You can even save some time by learning more about our screening process and filling out an adoption application online at http://www.catsociety.org.

From October 1 - 31, all cats over 1 years old are $50, with kittens under 1 available for $75. Any companion is just $25.

From November 1 through December 31, you may adopt cats 5 years and older for $25; cats from 1-5 years for $50; and kittens 1 year and younger for $75. Any companion is still just $25.

What does your adoption fee include? As always, our cats are adopted to you with all of their vaccinations up to date, their spay/neuter surgery performed, a microchip, and a clean bill of health. You can even take your new family member to one of our participating vets within the first two weeks to give her a full checkup.

You may have also noticed that our specials are often targeted toward older cats. This is no accident – older cats are as special as they come, and we want everyone to know it. Need a few reasons to adopt an older cat?

1. You already know their size and temperament - there are no surprises with an older pet.

2. They are much less likely to climb drapes, attack furniture, and do other unwanted things in your home.

3. They have been saving up their love for years and are waiting anxiously to give all they can!

It’s true, we love our older cats, and we think you will, too. Come visit us, check our adoption specials, and meet your new best friend. We hope to see you soon!

Sincerely, Staci Trekles, ICS Board President

Despite my best efforts, a few of my friends in the shelter are still hoping for a sponsor. I’ve been trying to think of a new way to persuade visitors who pass by my hallway office to stop and join our program. I’m sure that many people know that Sponsor-a-Cat provides the major source of funding for the cats’ vet care, food, supplies and shelter. But I think many visitors enjoy admiring all the cats and forget that for just a monthly donation they can have a special cat of their own at the shelter. I was concentrating as hard as I could when I heard a friendly voice coming from an imposing black cat across the hall.

“Hey, kid,” Monica mewed, “don’t look so sad. You’ve worked so hard for years now to get all our friends sponsored, why don’t you take a break and work on getting yourself adopted. You’d make a wonderful only cat for someone who loves your corky tail and quirky personality. You’re just too cute. When you were ICS Sweetheart, you were an adorable kitten and people still remember that sweet little face.”

“If you think you could convince visitors to become sponsors, Monica, maybe I could concentrate on finding a forever home. How would you get the visitors’ attention?”

“Maybe you needed to put on a less fetching, more determined expression. I think we need a spokescat who has a strong message and a stern face. Like this. And tell people, ‘Just do it NOW!’”

So, here are pictures of some of the cats still needing a sponsor. Please fill out the coupon and mail it with your first month’s donation. NOW, please.

ICS 2016 Elections

Ask Ollie! by Viktoria Voller

It’s time once again to bring in new voulnteers to serve on the ICS Board of Directors. This year, there are five positions open:

• Vice-President• Recording Secretary• Corresponding Secretary• Two at-large positions

The preliminary ballot includes the following candidates:

Vice-President (none yet!)Corresponding Secretary (why don’t you think about it?)Member at large (2 available seats) Diana Foster Jennifer Stall

Would you like to add your name to this list? Contact the Nominations Committee (chairperson, Roberta Jocius) at [email protected] and let us know which seat you would like, and provide us with a brief description of your qualifications. We are always looking for new members of our organization, and hope you will take this opportunity to participate in the important work of board service.

Note that you must be an ICS member in good standing in order to serve on the board. Please see the back page of this newsletter or visit our website at http://www.catsociety.org to start or renew your membership.

What is “board service,” you might ask? Simply put, the ICS Board of Directors helps govern the business of the Independent Cat Society. This includes everything from ensuring that the organization is fiscally responsible to maintaining presence and working with other groups within the animal rescue and non-profit community of Northwest Indiana.

Full descriptions of the duties for all members and officers within the nine-person Board of Directors can be found in our bylaws, located on our website at http://www.catsociety.org/about-ics/board-of-directors.

Board candidates will be introduced to the membership during the regularly scheduled November board meeting on November 2, 2015, held at Purdue University North Central in room LSF-170A at 6:00pm. Elections will be held in a general membership meeting on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 6:00pm at the Valparaiso Public Library.

Dear Ollie: I am so embarrassed to be writing this but I need to ask for advice from a CANINE! I am a feline and very proud of it. Being meticulous about my grooming and hygiene, I was shocked to discover my 14 year old canine sister has

been rooting around in my litter box! She only started doing this in this last year and I have not switched my type of cat food and I don’t eat treats. My woman human cleans my box very often as I will not use a box that I deem unsanitary! So what is up with my sis? What she eats can’t possibly taste good and it makes her breath just awwwwful!

Signed,Wade, one curious cat

Dear Wade,Dogs are the gift that keeps on “grifting.” Grifters steal everything of value. I think your canine friend is stealing what he considers a treasure from your cat’s litter box. I’m a dog and for me the world is my restroom. So for a cat to do his or her business in a box filled with litter is incomprehensible, but it sure is interesting! Sometimes dogs just get bored, but sometimes this behavior is because of stress. Perhaps something is bothering your dear canine buddy that needs to be addressed. You might check online for some answers, but Wade, have your woman-human contact a veterinarian. Sometimes they know more than I do.

Dear Ollie,I learned an important lesson regarding my long time tortoise shell colored cat, Ferguson. You see, she was freaked out by my mother’s dogs, ran away and was missing for months. I searched for her, until I heard that a wonderfully kind woman took pity on her. In her time being out in the neighborhood, Ferguson had lost five pounds and developed a tape worm. When I heard of her rescue, I wanted her back since she had been my companion for seven years and lived with me in six states. But Ferguson was living in Pennsylvania with a wonderful family who loves her.

This week, I adopted another cat from the Independent Cat Society. He is a handsome, grey cat with big blue eyes and reminds me of Frank Sinatra, “Old Blue Eyes.” One thing I liked was that the cats there are already microchipped. I think my lesson is learned!

Meredith in Chicago Dear Meredith,This had to be a gut wrenching experience for you and I’m sure you shed many tears to learn that you had lost your companion of seven years. But now, two adult cats have a new beginning.

Sometimes things happen and even the best pet owners experience losses like this. I do hope that you have worked on making sure that there are no windows or other escape routes for your new cat to find! You might check out http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/cats/tips/cat_happy_indoors.html for some tips on how to keep your cat happily indoors from now on.
