Arizona Here We Come We decided we’d get out of the cold weather and spend a few weeks in sunny, warm Arizona. We went to Arizona to be snow birds and this is what we got. We heard it was the coldest winter they have had in 30 years and also had record snowfall. But all was not lost, we did get to see a lot of cool stuff, starting off with Biosphere 2. Eight crew members were enclosed in the structure, made of steel and glass, for 2 years. From 1991 to 1993 they were to conduct experiments to see if we could survive in space in a controlled environment. The ex-periment eventually failed for numerous reasons. The U of AZ now owns the over 3 acres of buildings and surrounding area and they do scientific studies and teaching in controlled laboratories. Among the areas inside the Biosphere are an ocean, rain forest and desert. Very interesting and beautiful. The Pima Air and Space Museum is one of the world’s largest aircraft collections with over 350 aircraft. There are WWII planes, supersonic spy planes, the world’s smallest Bi-plane, helicopters, spacecraft and so much more, housed in 6 hangers and outside areas. You can take the Tram ride around the 80 acre museum and see one plane with a wing span of the length of a football field. Tombstone famous for the 1881 Gunfight at the OK Corral also has the Boot Hill Graveyard ,

Stagecoach rides and the Guinness Book of World Records, Rose Tree. Given to a young bride by a

friend in 1885 was planted behind a boarding house where it grew so large a metal and wooden trellis

was built to help hold it up. It covers 9000sq feet and its truck in 12 feet around. And of course there

are plenty of gift shops.

Old Tucson, built in 1939 by Columbia Pictures Movie Studios are home to more than 400 films, TV shows and commercial productions, was a fun place to visit. Some of the famous actors who made films there were John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Elizabeth Taylor and Kurt Russell. They had action packed things going on all day including gunfights, stunt shows, can can girls and a wonderful ice cream shop. Some of the buildings burned down in a fire in 1995 and were rebuilt. Walking down the dirt streets, you could almost expect to see the horses riding into town. Kartchner Caverns State Park was found in 1974. It became a State Park in 1988 and was opened to the public in 1999. About 1,500 bats hibernate in the caverns in the summer months. The multicol-ored bacon draperies, stalactites and stalagmites were breathtaking. The Titan Missile Museum, is where one of the 54 Titan ll missiles is housed . They were on alert across the US from 1963 to 1987. Going 35 ft underground into the missile complex we got to see the control center and hear all about what was done daily, the safe guards and what would have happened if the President had ordered it to be fired. It could have been launched in 58 seconds with 9 million tons of TNT and a range of 5,500 miles. The crew members had no idea where it would have been launched to. We were able to see the missile from below the ground and look down onto it from above ground. The museum became a National Historic Landmark in 1994. Air Force Thunderbird Museum at Nellis AFB was great. We got to watch them fueling the planes as well as watch some fighter jets fly their formations. Green Valley Pecan Company was a fun little gift shop. The Walden family has owned the 7,000 acres of pecan trees since 1948. The trees all looked dead, but we were assured that in the spring they would all become green again. So even tho the weather wasn’t nice and warm we did have a good trip. Richard and Diana Dunning
