Our students in grades four to eight are getting ready for Track and Field as well. We have our plant sale in progress now. The plants are beautiful and will be available before Mothers Day. Theyve done a great job! In April I announced to the staff and to the School Council that I will be retiring at the end of this school year. I have worked for the York Region District School Board for 34 years and I have loved being an educator. I am looking forward to some new and different challenges. A new principal will be selected and that information will be shared with the community in early June. I have thoroughly enjoyed the four years that I have spent at Lakeside. Administrators’ Message

April has been a busy month for all of us at Lakeside. There have been many activities availa-ble to students including junior basketball and choir and band performances. Our students in grades four to eight are getting ready for Track and Field as well.

We have our plant sale in progress now. The plants are beautiful and will be available before Mother’s Day. Please support the School Council fund raiser. We send a very special thank you to members of the School Council who have worked hard this year to support the staff and students of Lakeside. They’ve done a great job!

The school yard is clean and beautiful thanks to Lakeside students who “pitched in” to tidy up as part of the celebra-tion of Earth Day.

As we approach warmer weather we are reminding students about the dress code. This dress code has been creat-ed by staff and parents and shared with students and is standard across the York Region District School Board schools.

It is included on page 5 in the agenda and we ask that you read and review it with your children.

Fight the Bite! Protect yourself against West Nile virus and Lyme disease

Whether you are heading outdoors to keep active, go camping or work in your garden, protect yourself and your family against West Nile virus and Lyme disease. West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infect-ed mosquito, while Lyme disease is spread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick.

What you can do:

Cover up; wear light coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants when you go outdoors Use an insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin Check yourself and your children for ticks Remove attached ticks as quickly as possible Clean up standing water around your home where mosquitoes like to breed

For more information on West Nile virus and Lyme disease, visit york.ca/westnile and

york.ca/lymedisease

Now get out there and enjoy the great outdoors; just remember to fight the bite!

This material is provided by York Region Public Health.

Roots of Empathy at Lakeside

Roots of Empathy’s mission is to build caring, peaceful, and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults.

We are very fortunate to have this program at Lakeside thanks to Mrs. Kolar and the volunteer fami-lies.
