Why is formality important?

Starter task: What’s wrong with this if it is a letter to the local council

Firstly, I don’t mean to moan, but I would like to complain about the look of the park. It is bad. It is quite dirty; it has bad equipment and it isn’t very safe.

Answer: It lacks sophistication in it’s language use and uses the wrong register.

Topic SentencesWhat is a topic sentence?

A topic sentence is the opening sentence to your paragraph.

It should engage the reader, give a good indication to the topic of the paragraph, and if possible reference the previous paragraph.

Look at the topic sentences below. Write down:•What you think the rest of the paragraph was about.•How it engages the reader. •Does it make links to previous paragraphs in any way?

•At present, our community facilities are just not good enough.
