IntroductionRationale

A smart, professional image must be maintained by all staff working within Connolly Hospital. Staff mustensure that clothes and accessories worn are well maintained, adhere to Infection Prevention &;Controlguidelines and health and safety requirements and comply with patient and public expectation.

Principles of the Dress Code Uniform Policy for All StaffThe dress code does not permit the following:· Very casual or high fashion trousers, such as ripped jeans.

· Low waistband trousers showing the abdomen/lowerback or allowing underwear to be visible.· Cropped tops, showing the abdomen/lowerback.· Strapless or revealingtops.· Short skirts.· Leggings

Badges · A Connolly Hospital issued Security ID Badge must be worn at all times.All badges must be removed in situations where they are likely to cause injury to patient, staff orvisitors. If worn, neck lanyards must have a quick release safety clip

Personal Hygiene· It is the responsibility of each individual to maintain a clean and well-groomed appearance

Finger Nails· Should be kept short, clean and neat· Nail varnish, false nails, nail extensions or nail jewellery/gems are not permitted in order tocomply with the Connolly Hospital Hand Hygiene Policy

Hair . Hair should be clean and if long should be tied back in a clinical activities

Jewellery· Ringswith stones must not be worn in clinicalsituations as they compromisehand hygieneand

could also cause injury to patients. Jewellery, including watches, and all rings, other than plainbands, must be removed when dealing directly with patients

. The policy should also be read in conjunction with local policies specific to your area/departmentof work.

This Policy reflects best practice and available evidence with regard to the wearing of suitabledress and uniforms.

.Non,compliance. Failure to comply with the requirements of this policy will result in staff member being put off

duty until they complywith policyand mayalso result in disciplinary action being considered.

Responsibility. Managers / Consultants have the responsibility for ensuring that staff in their area /team complies

with the terms of the Hospital's Dress Code/Uniform Policy.

Changing into Uniform:· Protective clothing &:uniforms are worn to protect the food from the individual.

Appendix 6 - Households Services

Uniform:Household Services:

· Unifonn as providedby the hospital. The hospital provides 3 tops & 2 trousers for allstaff per year.

Janitors:· A Sweatshirr,polo shirt & trousers as providedby the hospital. The Hospital provides 2

sweatshirts, 2 trousers & 3polo shirts to all staff.

Wearing the Uniform:· Fulluniform must be worn whilst on duty and staffmay not alter the uniform in anywaywithout the prior consent of the Hospital.

Maintenance:

· Staff are responsible for the maintenance of issued uniforms to a standard acceptable tothe Hospital. This includes cleanliness and the general presentation of the uniform. If theunifonn needs repairing or replacing please contact the Duty Household ServicesSupervisor

Clothing: · Certain standards of formality in dress should be maintained at all times to project aprofessionalimagewhilst in work. Cardigans/fleeces/jackets are not to be worn onduty in ward areas. (In cold weather a navy cardigan may be worn. This is notsupplied by the hospital.)

Appendix 7 - LaboratoryUniform:

· White' Howie' Coats should be worn over indoor clothing at all times while work in thelab.

Uniform:· Winter Rainproof hoods, steel toecap boots/shoes, summer/winter jacket, overalls &::hatif necessary. Protective Equipment is provided if necessary Le. gloves, hats, masks etc.

Wearing the Uniform:· Full uniform must be worn whilst on duty and staffmaynot alter the uniform in anywaywithout the prior consent of the Hospital.

Appendix 9 - Medical Social Worker

Application:· All permanent, temporary Social Workers and Social Work Assistantsemployed in the Medical Social Work Department. Social Work Students mustcomply with the Department's dress code.

Principles:· All staff are expected to dress in a business like manner and to avoid fashionextremes. Leisure dress such as tracksuits, jeans are not acceptable.

Appendix 10 - Medical StaffUniform· WHITE COATSARE NOT TO BE WORN A TANY TIME WITH EXCEPTION OF

allMedicalStudents (short sJeevedwhite coatsonly)

Medicalstaff;although they do not wear uniform, are expected to look professional

· The overall image of doctors is important to patients, staff and visitors, particularly onfirst introductions.

· The clothes worn should be appropriate forgoing to work. Staffshould not dress to drawundue attention to them self.

· Clothes should be well maintained. In an emergencysituation, especiallyout ofhours,medical staffmayprioritize a timely response overkeepingup appearances.

· What is acceptable in one clinicalarea maybe unacceptable in another (e.g.cultural,practical differences). Some areas will require more formality.

· In order to facilitate good hand and forearm washing when carrying out clinicalactivity, medical staff must be "naked below the elbows" i.e. roll up longsleeves/wear short sleeves, remove wrist watches and any jewellery below theelbows except for a single plain ring.

· Ties, if worn, should be tucked in for all clinical activity. This includes lifting or assistingpatients if done at the bedside or in a clinic.

· Medicalstaff should wear plastic aprons where exposure to blood and/or body fluids isanticipated. (Standard Precautions)

· Medicalstaff should wear appropriate PersonalProtective Equipment (PPE) whencoming in contact with a patient where Contact, Droplet or Airborne Precautions are inplace

· If an individual doctor generates complaints from patients, visitors or other staff aConsultant or senior Management may request that individual employee modifies his/herappearance and/or hand washing technique.

Appendix II - NursingUniform Requirement:

· AllNursing, Student Nurses and AgencyStaffshould wear specificuniform as notedbelow, wear and maintain uniform and adhere to personal hygienerequirements as persection 16.

· AllNursing, Student Nurses and AgencyStaffshould wear suitable and practicalfootwear in the workplace, havingregard to safetyand professionalimage.· Shoes should be plain black/navy, flat heeled, leather/leather type with quiet soles,supportive shoeseither in laceup or slip on design, shoesmust be clean,polished and ingoodrepair, and should meet health and safetyrequirements

· It is recommended that staff keep specific footwear designated solely for use whenworking within a hospital clinicalarea

· Shoesin materials which cannot be adequatelycleanedfollowingblood or body fluidcontamination are not suitable

protective clothing. This clothingmust be of the correct type to minimizethe effectsofexposure to the hazard.

· Protective clothing required in each area will be identified by risk assessment andpublished best practice guidelines.

· Plastic aprons must be worn when assisting patients with any activity which may resultin the dispersal ofpathogens and/or procedures causingsplashing ofblood and bodilyfluids. Plastic aprons must not be worn outside ward area.

Uniform:Physiotherapists:

· White Tunic with navy trim and navytrousers. Alternativelya white aertex polo maybeworn instead of tunic.

Physiotherapy Assistants:· Wear a light blue tunic with navy trim and navy trousers.

Physiotherapy Students:· Wear a white tunic and navy trousers.
