IEEE COMMUNICATION SOCIETY (COMSOC), KOLKATA CHAPTER Introduction : The ComSoc chapter of IEEE Kolkata section is formed in 13 Oct 2003 and actively engaged with various activities like DLT, Technical Lectures and Workshop etc. The Geo code of this chapter is–CH10300. With the active Involvement of organizing various events like DLT, IEEE Lecture meetings, Workshop, Industry participation technical seminars, International Conferences and membership drive, 5G Summit the ComSoc Kolkata Chapter increases its membership strength to a great extent. In the year Dec 2016 ComSoc Kolkata Chapter created a new ComSoc MIST Student Branch Chapter with 30 student members. This chapter has received a financial grant of amount 950 USD from IEEE HQ in 2016. 2016 is the eventful year for the Kolkata chapter, being the part of organizing 3 International Conferences and providing Technical Sponsorship, two Distinguished Tour programs (DLT), 6 IEEE Lecture meetings, 3 out-reach programs, one day Industry seminar etc. Chapter activities starts at the beginning of the year by hosting IEEE Technical Lecture meeting on 8 th Jan 2016 followed by almost month wise programs over the year. A. Distinguished Lecturer Tour 1 : DLT 2016 DLT Speaker: Prof. Luiz Da Silva, Professor of Telecommunications Trinity College Dublin has delivered the DLT program on 20 June 2016 at KP Basu Memorial Hall, Jadavpur University on the topic “Sharing Infrastructure and Spectrum: A Vision for the Future of Mobile Networks”. There were 65 attendees from academia and industry. As wireless operators face enormous projected increases in demand without corresponding revenue growth, increased network sharing is likely to become a major trend in the evolution of their networks. This trend manifests itself in the push for resource virtualization, dynamic spectrum access, and active infrastructure sharing among operators. In this presentation, some of the fundamental trade-offs between spectrum and radio access infrastructure sharing was discussed. The DLT program started at 12.00 noon on 20 June with the welcome address given by ComSoc Chairperson Prof. Iti Saha Misra. It was the pleasure to have Prof. Nichola Marcheti of Dublin as the guest of honour. The formal inauguration of DLT was made by lighting of lamp. Prof. Salil Kumar Sanyal gave the vote of thanks. Prof. Luiz, has arrived 19 June early in the Morning. He has visited Broadband Wireless Communication Lab of ETCE Department from 12.00 noon to 3.00 pm to have close interactions with researchers who have shared their research work. A master student gave live demonstration on sensor network application for agriculture developed by herself. Prof. Luiz then taken for a local city tour followed by dinner.

Subnets of simple devices such as RFIDs and tiny sensors/actuators deployed in massive numbers in 2D and complex 3D spaces will be a key aspect of Internet of Things. Most techniques for self-organization, routing and tracking in such networks rely on distances and localization in the physical domain.
