Spare that tree! Hey, we’re back in the timber business! Salty Chops! Fairfield Ranger District tree guy John Pine (no joke!) wants to remind firewood cutters that there’s a big timber sale – the delightfully named Salty Chops timber sale – scheduled to take place up in the hills! “Trees sporting paint – and sometimes sporting signs – are part of timber sales. Those trees have been marked to denote the boundaries of sale areas (orange paint) or to denote trees designated to be cut (blue or yellow paint).” Rogue cutting of boundary trees is against the law. “But what’s more important,” according to Pine, “is that removal of these marker trees disrupts sale operations and could cause sale purchasers money in lost time or trespass costs. Cutting of these cut- designated trees is theft, because they’ve been paid for already.” Remember, Salty Chops is watching! The Forest Service regularly puts up signs marking and explaining timber sales or prohibited areas, but signs often disappear because of cosmic forces still unexplained by scientists, marvels Pine. Our aptly named forester also reminds us that other logging-related forest items – logs, log decks, and slash piles – are property of the logger and Forest Service – they’re not okay to cut for firewood. It’s like the Old Days, Pine notes: “These are not changes to the firewood program. However, it’s been a while since we've had large timber sales in the area and people may not know about the longstanding rules. We just want to help people stay out of trouble. If you have questions, call 764-3202.”
