There’re plenty of reasons to visit Iford Manor on the outskirts of Bath. One, of course, is the beautiful garden; two is the cakes at tea time; but three is that it is the home of Iford Arts whose programme of music events in the ravishing Peto Garden runs from early June to August. It offers you the unique opportunity to bring a picnic and experience this fairy tale place on a summer’s evening.

The Iford Festival has grown up as a response to the other-wordly setting. Opera performances in the round in the captivating cloister are recognized as uniquely engaging. Always performed in English, by the cream of the upcoming generation of singers, musicians and directors, opera productions at Iford are distinguished for their nuanced intimacy and direct communication with the audience. It is sometimes said ‘If you haven’t seen it at Iford, you haven’t seen it’. And on the classical front there are charming chamber concert events also. Or, if you fancy something a little less ‘highbrow’, bring your friends and a party picnic and enjoy spreading yourselves on the lawns at one of our three summertime Proms, enjoying acclaimed jazz and swing bands, with the occasional foray into the cabaret style ‘opera bar’ for a cocktail.

You will always find us welcoming and informal. Whilst artistic excellence is our key objective, pretentiousness is not! We platform national and international artists of the very highest calibre, so, if you are thinking of a taster visit, to opera, for example, Iford Arts would be an excellent place to start. As baffling as it is popular, sublime as well as entertaining, Mozart’s Magic Flute remains one of the most instantly enjoyable operas in the repertory. Through trials of body and spirit Tamino seeks Pamina, and Pappageno the birdman seeks his Pappagena. The goodies turn out to be bad and vice versa. Mozart’s music creates a truly magical consistency overlaying Magic Flute which by its end is often felt to be his most transcendent and moving work.

Iford Arts is proud to present a new production created for our forthcoming season by John Savournin, to be premiered at Iford by his brilliant young company Charles Court Opera, with conductor David Eaton. Described in the Daily Telegraph as “A force of nature” and increasingly in demand both at home and abroad as an acclaimed performer and director, John Savournin has gained a reputation for his high- energy productions of opera, light opera and musical theatre.

Verdi was fascinated by Shakespeare. He focused minutely and up close upon Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, a couple both deeply flawed and deeply human. And he charts with characteristic empathy the timeless conflict between ambition and conscience which lies at the story’s heart, creating one of the finest scores of his early period. Shakespeare’s bizarre ‘weird sisters’ inspired him further to create delicious music which is extraordinarily suggestive of the supernatural as the third element which drives the fast-paced narrative.

A strong creative team is led by Iford’s own maestro Oliver Gooch conducting CHROMA, with director Bruno Ravella and choreographer Jo Meredith, all relishing the chance to create a new production of this masterpiece at Iford.

Anyone who has ever fallen madly in love should be in the audience for A Fairy Queen at Iford. It is based firmly on scenes from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tim Nelson has created a new performing version of Henry Purcell’s score fused more closely with Shakespeare’s beloved comic fantasy than the C17 original. Purcell’s brilliant, acid, spikey, haunting, dance-driven music will be performed by Christian Curnyn and his Early Opera Company orchestra, together with a starry cast of singers. The music in our new version creates a continuous thread, entangling the Fairies, the runaway lovers and the ‘rude mechanicals’ together in an English dreamworld. In the other-worldly atmosphere of Iford, other-worldly explanations are as good as any other to explain the ridiculous and inexplicable gusts of human passion…

K A I H O F F M A NKai Hoffman and her Kombo love the music of the 1950s, from rhythm and blues to rockabilly, rock ‘n’ roll to New Orleans, with a sprinkling of mambo and a dash of Kai’s own vintage-inspired original material to keep the party going! With Kai Hoffman, lead vocals, Dan Faulkner on saxophone (Glenn Miller Orchestra), Simon Picton on guitar (Sugar T and the Swells), Liam Dunachie on piano (Jivestar), Dave O’Brien on bass (Basin Street Brawlers), and Mez Clough on drums (Si Cranstoun), their brand new album is Luckiest Girl Alive. Kai has been performing with the Kombo since April, 2015 – their first show was at Ronnie Scott’s Club! Cloister An intimate cloister evening of songs, arias and opera ensembles from the Iford Arts New Generation Artists who are involved in this year’s production of Verdi’s Macbeth at Iford. The evening is curated, presented and accompanied on piano by Oliver Gooch, distinguished conductor and Iford Arts Music Director, who is also director of our Young Artists programme. The singers for this popular and informal concert are handpicked for our Young Artists scheme from the newly emerging crop of exciting talent. A quartet of fabulous young singers will perform favourite works from Purcell to Cole Porter and Verdi to Vaughan Williams, with at least a nod to this year’s Shakespearean theme. This delightful hour-long concert will be performed twice over the course of the evening, to allow for picnics either before or after the music.

E D U C AT I O N O U T R E A C H Iford Arts is committed to annual education projects involving local school children creating their own music and drama. This season‘s Shakespeare anniversary project is based on our Macbeth production. Children will get a glimpse of the show on a ‘murder mystery day’ at Iford. A series of schools workshops with skilled animateurs will support them as they devise their own version of the story answering the question ‘Who killed the King’? The project will culminate in a performance at Colston Hall, Bristol as part of the Bristol Festival of Children’s Music.
