Innovation
Through continual innovation the IG range nowprovides lintel solutions for every structuralrequirement, compliant with the latest regulations.
Founded in 1958, IG Lintels is a divisionof Europes largest manufacturer ofsteel lintels and masonry supportsystems. IG Lintels design, manufactureand supply high quality steel lintelsthroughout Europe.
IG invented the original open backlintel in 1967, which quickly becamethe industry standard. Our lintels are
engineered to be the most structurally
and thermally efficient lintels available.Continual development ensures theyare widely specified for use throughoutEurope on commercial, industrial, residential and institutional projects.
In 2011 IG introduced Hi-Therm, aunique product designed to exceedthe thermal requirements of futurebuilding regulations.

THERMAL PERFORMANCE
Building regulations require that lintelsshould be assessed for their effect onthe thermal performance of a building.A lintels thermal performance is expressedin terms of Psi Values () i.e. linear thermaltransmittance.
STANDARD IG LINTELAll IG standard lintels satisfy the thermalperformance requirements of England andWales Part L of the building regulations,Northern Irelands Part F and ScotlandsTechnical Handbook, section 6.
Our standard L1 range has Psi valuesranging from 0.2 to 0.3 W/m.k. The exactfigure of your Psi value depends upon thewall construction the lintel is built into. Formore detailed information on Psi valuesapplicable to your wall construction or formore information on accredited constructiondetails please contact IGs technical team.
STANDARD IG LINTELwith patented Thermal Break Plate
HI-THERM IG LINTELpatented Galvanised Steel/GRP Lintel
HI-THERM IG LINTELIGs Hi-Therm Lintel is a combination of GRPand Galvanised Steel. When combined thesetwo materials form the ultimate in lintel design- Psi 0.05 W/m.K
Testing of IGs Hi-Therm Lintel was carried out bythe BRE (Building Research Establishment) usingPhysibels thermal analysis software TRISCO whichcomplies with BS EN ISO10211-1. The modellingfollows the requirements of the BRE conventionsdocument BR497.
OUTSTANDING ADVANTAGES
Outperformsall other cavity wall lintels forthermal performance. GRP has very lowthermal conductivity which practically eliminatescold bridging.
Outperformsstainless steel and galvanisedsteel for corrosion resistance. The GRP outerflange, quite simply, will never corrode.
Outperformsstainless steel in price. GRP ismore competitively priced than stainless steel.
DPC is not normally required. The GRP outerflange does not require the installation of aseparate Damp Proof Course/Cavity Tray.
(Areas of severe exposure will require a separateDPC. See BS 8104 zones 3+4).
Hi-Therm has achieved a 1 hour fire resistance testas carried out by Exova Warringtonfire utilising theheating conditions of BS EN 1363-1 1999.

Standard Lintel
PerformanceFIRE PERFORMANCE
IG lintelshave been subjected to a fire test(ref: WARRES No. 101263) in accordance withBS 476:Part20: 1987, at Exova Warringtonfireand achieved a one hour fire performance.
If longer fire rating figures are required they canbe achieved by applying a proprietary fire boardto the soffit of the inner flange of the steel lintel. Please contact our technical team if furtherfire rating provisions are required.
CORROSION RESISTANCE
IGs standard range of lintels are manufactured fromhigh quality grade pre-galvanised mild steel with azinc coating of 600g/m (including both sides).
The hot dipped, pre-galvanising process is carriedout at the mill to ensure a more consistent quality ofzinc coating. This guarantees a more effective anti-corrosive system. Furthermore pre-galvanised lintelsare much more environmentally friendly than postgalvanised lintels with a lower carbon footprint.
STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE
The IG Lintelrange has safe working loads asdetailed in each applicable loading table in our LintelGuidebrochure. The structural performance figureswithin each table have been ascertained by testingin accordance with the requirements of standardsBS 5977 Part 2 1983 and BS EN 845-2:2003.
The figures take into account the different loadingarrangements which are common to traditionalcavity wall construction.
Differential Total UDL kN 3:1Up to 75% loading on the inner leaf.
Differential Total UDL kN 19:1Up to 95% loading on the inner leaf.

For detailed information on our range of stainlesssteel lintels see page 86.
GALVANISED STEEL/GRP
IGs Hi-Therm lintel range is manufactured from GRPfor the outer leaf and Galvanised steel for the inner leaf. The GRP used is a pultruded fibre reinforced polymermade from polyester resin, fillers and continuousreinforcement consisting of continuous glass fibrestrand roving and glass fibre mat, protected by asurface veil.
POLYSTYRENE INSULATION
IGs lintels are insulated with expanded polystyreneand conforms to BS 13163: 2008. The polystyreneexpansion process involves an air and pentane mixture. The release of pentane into the atmosphere causesno Ozone Depletion or Global Warming therefore ourinsulation has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP)and Global Warming Potential (GWP) of ZERO.
The expanded polystyrene (EPS) incorporated into ourpre-insulated lintels does not use, contain or produceformaldehyde, CFCs or indeed any so called CFCs(i.e. HCFC and HFAS). The insulation used in IG lintelsconforms to the Montreal Protocol.
The thermal conductivity of expanded polystyreneis 0.03 W/mK.

12 LINTEL GUIDE
Lintel Installation Guide
1 Lintels should be installed with a minimum endbearing of 150mm, bedded on mortar andlevelled along its length and across its width.
2 The masonry above the lintel should be builtin accordance with BS EN 1996-2:2006.
3 Raise the inner and outer leaves simultaneously
to avoid excessive eccentricity of loading, with a maximum height difference of 225mm(masonry should be laid on a mortar bed andall perpendicular joints should be filled).
4 Allow the mortar to cure before applyingfloor or roof loads (Temporary proppingbeneath a steel lintel is practised to facilitatespeed of construction).
5 The NHBC recommend a damp proof course(DPC) or cavity tray should be installed over
all openings in external cavity walls.
6 When installing concrete floor units or otherheavy components above a lintel, care shouldbe taken to avoid shock loading and floorunits should not be dragged into position.Masonry immediately above the lintel shouldbe allowed to cure.
7 Point loads should not be applied directly ontolintel flanges. Lintels should have a minimumof 150mm masonry between the flange andthe application level of any form of loading.Consult IGs technical department if applyinga point load above a lintel.
8 The external lintel flange must project beyondthe window/door frame and it is recommendedthat a flexible sealing compound is usedbetween the underside of the lintel flangeand the frame.
9 When the underside of a lintel is exposed, its
appearance can be enhanced by the additionof lintel soffit cladding.
10 Do not cut lintels to length or modify themin any way without consulting an IG engineer.

DAMP PROOF COURSE - DPC
LINTEL POSITION WITHIN A CAVITY WALL
PROPPING
A Lintel should be centred inthe cavity and the distancebetween lintel up-stand andmasonry must not exceed 8.5mm
B Masonry should not overhangany flange by more than 30mm.
Propping a lintel is sometimespracticed to facilitate speed ofconstruction. It should only beintroduced after initial masonry loadhas been applied to the lintel.
When propping a lintel, a horizontal
timber plank should be placedalong the underside of the lintel andsuitable* props secured into placeat maximum 1200mm centres.
* Suitability of props is theresponsibility of site management.
In accordance with BS EN 1996-2:2006and NHBC requirements all externalwall lintels MUST be installed witha flexible damp proof course withthe exception of those adequatelyprotected by an eaves overhang orsimilar form of protection.
Stop ends should be provided asspecified by BS EN 1996-2:2006and the NHBC, to avoid moistureentering the cavity near the reveals.Proprietary stop ends should be usedor alternatively the DPC should extendto the edge of the external lintel flangeand 50-150mm beyond the end of thelintel (depending on coursing) to allowformation of an integral stop end at asuitable perpendicular joint.
Provide weep holes at a maximumof 450mm intervals (at least two peropening) with fair-faced masonry.
Consider the use of soffit claddingfor all coastal sites. Stainless steel to beused within 500mof the coast (NHBC).

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
IG steel products are produced
from steel plate which maypresent sharp edges. Suitablepersonal protective equipmentshould be worn at all times duringhandling and installation. Glovesshould be worn to avoid injuryfrom any sharp edges or corners.
When lifting or carrying alintel undertake a personal riskassessment paying attentionto the size and weight of theproduct. To avoid lifting strains
any lintels other than the shortestlengths should be lifted by atleast two people or alternativelyby mechanical means.
Do not use damaged lintels.
STORAGE
Lintels should be stored on woodenskids on flat ground. IG recommendsthat they are stored one bundle highonly, unless adequate measures aretaken to ensure that the stack willremain stable. The banding strapsare taut and care should be takenwhen cutting these to avoid personalinjury and/or the bundle collapsing.
DISPOSAL
Ensure that all IG packaging andwaste are disposed of responsibly.Due care must be given to theenvironmental impact of thedisposal method.
COSHH - Control of SubstancesHazardous to Health
IG lintels are fabricated fromgalvanised or stainless steel andpose notoxicity hazard, they arealso insulated with preformedpolystyrene. Most lintels containa perforated steel key platefor rendering purposes and/or asteel strengthening plate for heavyduty requirements which alsoposes no hazard.
All components and materials inour products are considered as
non-hazardous to healthunder normal conditions ofuse as determined by COSHHRegulations 2002.

Lintel type comparison Values
Up to 5 times more thermally efficientthan a steel cavity wall lintel, Hi-Thermoutperforms other lintels.
The significant reductions in thermalbridging due to the GRP component will
assist in the building design process toachieve compliance with Part L and TheCode for Sustainable Homes.
The use of Hi-Therm will make asignificant contribution to a buildingsperformance in respect of the FabricEnergy Efficiency Standards (FEES).
Outperforms Stainless Steel on priceand corrosion resistance.
Hi-Therm has achieved the 1 hour fireresistance test as carried out by Exova
Warringtonfire utilising the heatingconditions of BS EN 1363-1 1999.
DESIGN FEATURES
Patented GRP and Galvanised Steelhybrid design.
Galvanised steel is used to support theheavier load on the inner leaf of thecavity wall.
Profiled CFC free insulation ensures
the continuity of insulation.

To achieve loading figures lintel must bebuilt in with blockwork as shown. Maximumoverhang of 30mm on outer leaf. Ensure
all perpendicular and horizontal joints arefilled with mortar. Place mortar bed on topof blockwork before floor units are laid toprovide even distribution of load. Lintelsmay be propped to facilitate speed ofconstruction. See Lintel Installation on page 12.
