• 1. Describe the primary circuit in an ignition system:

• -Battery

• -Ignition switch

• -Ballast resistor

• -Primary windings in coil

• -Points or transistor switch

• 2. Describe the Secondary circuits of an ignition system:

Spark plugs, plug wires, cap rotor and Secondary windings in the coil.

• 3. Explain how the ignition system works?

• Low voltage is in the battery, it goes through the primary coil, the circuit collapses, the voltage surges into the secondary windings then goes through the rotor through the distributor cap, through the plug wires, and the spark plugs. (This takes place when the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.)

• 4. What is timing?

• It is when the spark plug sparks just at the right time. Usually 6 degrees before TDC when idoling. The spark timing advances (changes) when the RPMs increase.

1. Use this battery tester, (hydrometer)when checking the condition of the battery.

2. Use a wire feeler gauge to gap a spark

plug, not a “spark plug gaper”.

3. Tune up specifications are the settings and readings for the engine.

4. Bend the ground electrode on the spark plug to adjust the gap.

Always check the hold down bracket and battery connections.

- Connect the negative cable to the ground away from the battery when jumpstarting to avoid sparks, when jump starting a car, to avoid an explosion.

7. Cold cranking amps are an indication of a batteries power.

8. Baking soda is great for neutralizing acid on battery posts.
