Proven Advantages
IHC Technical Services
The products of Mineral Processing have the following advantages for the customer:• proven excellent recovery of >98%• recovery of fi ne parti cles (50 microns)• large capaciti es with a relati vely small separati on plant• excellent match between excavati ng equipment and
separati on plant• environmental friendly operati on• proven reliable performance• low running cost• low hutch water requirement • low power consumpti on
“A system is more than the sum total of its parts” is so oft en proven in the alluvial mining world: a properly analysed separati on process, a balanced fl ow sheet and careful selecti on of components can make or break the effi ciency of the mining plant.IHC Merwede BV originates from a group of Dutch shipyards that joined forces over sixty years ago, with the main aim of servicing the alluvial mining industry. IHC Merwede off ers full services to the mining market:
• consultancy and engineering services• dredge mining• complete separati on plants• mineral processing equipment• deep-sea mining• life cycle support

Exploded View IHC Jig Standard Design Jig & Skid Frame Jig Unique Saw-tooth Movement High Recovery IHC Jig
What is a Jig?A Jig is a gravity separator, which sepa-rates minerals from slurry using pulsa-ting water displacement. Minerals are separated from slurry by a difference in specific weight.
The concentrate cone underneath the Jig bed moves up and down in a “saw tooth” motion, creating a fast upward stroke and a slow downward stroke. This causes a pulsating water flow from the cone through the Jig bed.
How it worksThe feed enters the Jig in the centre and flows in a radial manner over the
• gold• tin (cassiterite)• magnetite• lead• diamonds• mineral sands
In addition to alluvial mining, Mineral Processing is also involved in other mining applications:• hard rock mining• recovery of minerals as by-products
of sand and gravel winning• environmentally friendly separation
processes• tailing re-handling• deep-sea mining R&D
bed towards the tailing chute. The Jig bed usually consists of a layer of coar-se, heavy particles (ragging), which are placed on the Jig screen. The mixture of sand and mineral particles is fedas slurry on top of the ragging, also penetrating it. The ‘saw-tooth’ move-ment causes the heavy, coarse grains to pass rapidly over the bed, while the fine sand and lighter minerals take more time to penetrate through the ragging and screen. These are drawn off as concentrate. Mineral Processing supplies equipment that is used in the mining of:
Standard Design Jig SeriesThe SD Jig Series are Jig installations consisting of a combination of Standard modules. These installations are especi-ally designed for optimum performance in that environment. This ensures that customers always get an installation best suited to the application.
The SD Jig installation has a modu-lar construction, which makes it a dismountable processing plant and easier to transport. Depending on the required capacity, modules can be combined up to a maximum of twelve. For smaller capacities a mini, micro and super micro module are available.
The advantages of these SD and SF Jig Series are:• easy to transport• lightweight construction • flexibility in number and
arrangement• standard bed length• easy maintenance and repair, as
each module can be shut down individually
Skid Frame Jig SeriesThe SF Jig Series are Jigs that are mounted on Skid Frames, used in on-shore installations. These Jig instal-lations are standardised to various capacities, so customers can choose the installation most suited to their requirements.
Like the SD Jig installation, the SF Jig installation also has a modular con-struction. The SF Jig installation has the same range as the SD Jig instal-lation.
The Jig separation plants are available in various executions:• skid mounted, moveable plants• integrated into factory processing of
crushed rock• integrated into sand and gravel
separation plants• mounted aboard dredges • delivered as stand-alone plants on
pontoons, fed by dredges operating at a distance
IHC Merwede has undertaken theo-retical and practical research into the design and performance of the Jig. This has resulted in the development of a greatly improved jigging cycle. The Jig is a remarkable concentrator with the capability of handling large tonnages, thereby coping with widely fluctuating loads in terms of volume, as well as pulp density and grain size. It can take feeds more coarse than 25 mm and as fine as 0.05 mm, and still maintain an excellent recovery of 98%.
The Jig ‘saw-tooth’ pulsation pat-tern, developed by IHC Merwede, is superior to conventional patterns. It reduces the hutch water requirement and improves the recovery capability of fine, valuable minerals. The ‘saw-tooth’ movement consists of a fast upward and a slow downward stroke. In order to prevent loss of fine ore during the upward stroke, the aim is to produce a fierce upward stroke of short duration.
Each system has its own features; deciding which system to use depends on the number of modules used in the installation. The advantages of these systems are:• low power consumption• stroke and frequency adjustment• stroke pattern adjustment• installation and maintenance pos-
sible with normal mechanical skills and care
The downward stroke, also called the suction stroke, is much longer. During this phase, the fine particles are drawn into the bed.
IHC Merwede has developed two types of jig drives, which are able to facilitate the unique ‘saw-tooth’ move-ment. These are a mechanical drive and a mechanical-hydraulic drive. Both drives are designed to give reliable performance under the severe condi-tions that prevail on mineral dredgers and in mines.
