FORUM SPEAKER TOUR/ TAID AWARENESS

Houston’s IIDA usually kicks off the new year with the first program in January dedicated to awareness regarding legislation and TAID. This year Houston City Center had the privilege of combining its standard monthly program with the IIDA TX OK Forum Speaker Tour. Skyline Art Services generously volunteered to host the event in their gallery. All attendees were busy networking and enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres at the start of the event. Later attendees heard Donna Vining, FASID,IIDA, RID, CAPS speak on behalf of TAID and legislative updates leading up to Allison Levy's presentation "Put Your Best Foot Forward- Understanding the Issues + Advocating for your Profession".

Allison Levy discussed the legislative issues affecting the interior design profession, and the different opportunities for interior designers to get involved in shaping the laws and the public perception of their profession. The audience learned about legislative activities and advocacy efforts across the country, and what we can do to promote interior design careers and the profession locally

Allison is the Senior Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs for IIDA. She has a law degree from the University of Michigan and is a licensed attorney. Following law school, Allison worked on several political campaigns and in government affairs for a museum in New York. She brings her strong background in grassroots advocacy and law to IIDA, serving as a resource for IIDA Chapters and coalitions in their advocacy work. Her presentation was very informative.

The event was quite a success. IIDA would like to thank Skyline Art Services for hosting the event and

assisting with coordination. We would also like to thank the TX OK Forum Speaker Tour underwriters: The

Mohawk Group, Tandus Flooring, and KC Rep Source.

IIDA PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT: MILESLOVE STUDIOS

Mileslove Studios is a Houston based full service commercial photography firm, specializing in architectural photography, run by owner and principal photographer Alyssa Holub.

Alyssa studied Fine Art and Interior Design at Texas State University and worked for many years in commercial interiors under such notable furniture, design and architecture firms as Ekitta Tables, Bennett Design Group and Perkins+Will. Since 2003 Alyssa has been involved with IIDA in many forms from an event volunteer to Houston City Center’s 2008 Programs Co-Chair. She has been lending her photographic talents to many IIDA and other industry events since 2005. Being a registered designer herself, Alyssa is able to combine her appreciation for design with her passion for photography. From staging a space through the editing process, Alyssa and her team pay meticulous attention to every detail to ensure their client’s projects look their absolute best. Her commitment to capturing the beauty of her subjects requires an essential knowledge of architectural design and expertise in lighting and editing to capture the important design characteristics being conveyed by the designer. The resulting images allow the viewer to revel in the beauty of the subject, whether it is a new medical tower, an expertly designed office space or lavish new nightspot.

IIDA PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT: SLYWORKS PHOTOGRAPHY, INC.

January 2012 | iida-tx-ok.org

Thank you IIDA, for this humbling opportunity to spill my beans. My background was

in architecture. I lovingly spent 12 years designing and making buildings. One day on

TV, I saw the Towers of Simon Rodia, and the love for the magical built-environment

ignited and never left. I made my first picture when I was 7 years old with a Yashica

Model J, I fell in love with the idea of preserving what I saw and trying to say my point

of view with a single frame.

If you think about it, architecture and interior design photography is the logical next

phase of my progression. Some people enjoy figuring out the villains in episodes of

CSI, well, I enjoy figuring out the design concepts behind a wonderful space. To me,

photographing a building is more than just recording the shapes, it needs to say

subtlety the languages and goals of the designer. And equally important the images

need to evoke feelings, for that defines our humanity. It is a blast making a living

doing the things I love doing all my life. My architecture photography is influenced by

Ezra Stoller, Julius Shuman, and more recently Marcus Bredt.

I am a proud member of PPA (Professional Photographer of America)

Sincerely, ShauLin Hon (Slyworks Photography, Inc.)

design community for 5 years. An avid networker, she works with Shannah O’Neill as an A+D Liaison at J.Tyler, a Herman Miller Dealer. Jessy has an enthusiasm for IIDA! She believes in the power of the Houston design community, as she owes her career to IIDA contacts and friends. A Registered Interior Designer, her expertise is further enhanced by her B.S. in Interior Design from the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin.

Jessy has an unhealthy affinity for jewelry, letter-pressed stationary, and carbs. She also enjoys walking her dog, Charlie, and watching movies at Alamo Drafthouse.
