“MICROSOFT OFFICE WORLD CHAMPION 2011” SHOW YOUR TALENT FOR GRAND PRIZES

On 7th May 2011, the opening ceremony and the National Round of “Microsoft Office World Champion 2011” were officially held in 5 cities nationwide: Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh. This year’s competition has attracted quite large number of students nationwide up to 97 schools (a three-time increase against that of last year). This incredible number proves the success of the first debut of Microsoft Office World Champion in Vietnam with great impression among Vietnamese students.

After the National Round, on 21st May 2011, 50 outstanding candidates entered the National Final Round. At the National Final Round, representing for the North were 13 candidates from 9 universities and high schools, of which Vietnam Maritime University took the lead with 4 candidates; representing for the Central were 2 candidates from Hue College of Economics and for the South were 35 candidates from 11 universities and vocational colleges, of which Banking University of Ho Chi Minh city with two-consecutive-year

participation took the lead with 8 candidates, and the second was VATC with 5. Especially, the 2 freelance candidates winning tickets

to the National Final Round this year were both in Ho Chi Minh city. To sum up, after the National Round, 10 most excellent candidates represented for all universities, vocational colleges, high schools and freelance students.

After 2 rounds of competition, on 11st June 2011, Microsoft Office World Champion 2011 awarding ceremony was solemnly held in Ho Chi Minh city. The competition is such a success with great increase in both the number of schools and quality of candidates. The competition also enjoyed support from many prestigious national and international groups, corporates and organizations: the Diamond sponsor – Viettel Group, the Golden sponsor – ED Vietnam, the Silver sponsor – Techcombank, Vietnamese American Vocational Training College (VATC), American Airlines and many information sponsors as well. Hence, information of the competition is widely imparted. Despite its second years old in Vietnam, Microsoft Office World Champion is recognized as a fair, competitive and heathy playground for Vietnamese youth, making great contribution to education and training development. To acknowledge the contribution of Organization Board – IIG Vietnam to the education and vocational training development, Minister of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs decided to award Certificate of Merit to Organization Board, which is a great encouragement and also the recognition to the competition and the Organization Board as well.

The competition in Vietnam ended with the selected 10 most excellent students being teamed up preparing for the world final. The World Final Round will welcome representatives from 70 countries and it is a big playground for Vietnamese team to show their talent and compete with numerous international candidates. Good luck to Vietnamese team and wait for “Vietnam” to be honoured on 3rd August 2011.

PRELIMINARY WORKSHOP ON 3-YEAR PILOT ACCREDITATION OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING INSTITUTIONS

On June 29th 2011, IIG Vietnam and its partners including CQAIE USA and CQAIE Vietnam took part in a Preliminary Workshop on 3-year Pilot Accreditation of Vocational Training Institutions in 2008 – 2010 period held by the General Department of Vocational Training (GDVT) in Hanoi. The Conference witnessed the presence of Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Phi – Deputy Minister of MOLISA, Mr. Nghiem Trong Quy – Deputy General Director of GDVT, specialists in quality assurance (QA), VET accreditors/auditors representatives of vocational training institutions nationwide.

In the recent years, along with an increase in the scope and quality of vocational training, accreditation is identified as a crucial factor to assess objective achievement and performance by vocational training institutions and programs. The year 2008 was a significant landmark in the development history of quality assurance and accreditation system in Vietnam’s vocational training with the introduction of a series of fundamental regulations on accreditation. . Thereof, the GDVT has implemented a program on pilot institutional accreditation during 3 consecutive years 2008, 2009, 2010 at 76 vocational training institutions which accounts for 5.9% of total institutions nationwide. The pilot accreditation outcomes have shown that 53 institutions (occupying 69%) achieve Level 3 – the highest level of vocational training quality; 15 achieving Level 2 and 8 reaching Level 1.

Thanks to strong experiences and outstanding capabilities, the consortium of IIG Vietnam, CQAIE Vietnam and CQAIE USA won the bidding package and became the sole consultant

for this 3-year pilot accreditation program of 64 vocational colleges and secondary vocational schools (65 times) during the period. Mr. Doan Hong Nam - President of IIG Vietnam, Director of Vietnam CQAIE, on behalf of the consulting firm, delivered a speech at the Preliminary Workshop. From the standpoint of an independent educational accreditation organization, Mr. Nam comprehensively summarized and evaluated outcomes of the pilot accreditation of vocational colleges and vocational secondary schools in the phase of 2008 – 2010, including the implementation scale and scope, characteristics, procedures, and achieved quality assurance results of these institutions. On the other hand, initial achievements and need-to-solve shortcomings encountered in the program were analyzed from different angles in his speech.

Noticeably, workshop participants were briefly introduced to VET quality assurance and accreditation systems of several developed countries in the region and all over the world. Besides, outstanding similarities and differences of Vietnam’s and other countries’ VET quality assurance were put into comparison. More importantly, a lot of proposals and recommendations related to policy making, direction, organization and implementation process at national and institutional levels as well as the criteria and standards system for institutional accreditation were presented in Mr. Nam’s speech and brought out into an open discussion in the workshop in order to enhance the efficiency of vocational training accreditation in Vietnam in the future. The report and recommendations of the consulting firm represented by Mr.Nam are highly appreciated by the GDVT for the objectiveness, rationality and feasibility in the current context of vocational training and accreditation in Vietnam.

The workshop also listened to a number of presentations on recent accreditation activities in Vietnam’s vocational training area by other attendants from various views. Through this workshop, the GDVT has drawn numerous experiences in organization of activities regarding vocational training quality accreditation, at the same time, determined future development objectives and orientation for VET accreditation system. In short, it should be noted that although VET accreditation is on the threshold in Vietnam, a remarkable number of efforts and achievements are worth being acknowledged, contributing to a breakthrough in vocational training quality and aiming at provision of a highly skilled technical human resource to support national industrialization and modernization, and global economic integration.

IIG VIETNAM ENTERS CO-OPERATION CONTRACT WITH THU DAU MOT UNIVERSITY

With a view to meeting the demand for TOEIC and TOEIC Bridge tests in Vietnam’s South – eastern region, on April 16th 2011, on behalf of IIG Vietnam, Ms. Vu Bich Ngoc – Director of HCMC Branch Office - IIG Vietnam and Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep – Rector of Thu Dau Mot University signed the contract which authorizes Thu Dau Mot University the official test site for TOEIC, TOEIC Bridge in the South - eastern region. Accordingly, the forthcoming TOEIC and TOEIC Bidge exams in the region will be administered in Thu Dau Mot University.

In the signing ceremony, great deal of helpful information concerning the TOEIC test including preparation materials, learning tools, as well as case studies in implementing TOEIC in various colleges and universities in Vietnam has drawn much attention from the audience in which IIG Vietnam will provide support in helping Thu Dau Mot University to concretize the set targets by: organizing teacher training courses on TOEIC–oriented teaching method; providing TOEIC curriculum compiled by ETS and IIG Vietnam’s experts; administering TOEIC

MEETING BETWEEN IIG VIETNAM AND CIEE (USA)

On 12th May 2011, President of IIG Vietnam - Mr. Doan Hong Nam worked with Mr. Matthew Redman – Product and Marketing Manager, Teach Abroad Programs, CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) at IIG Vietnam’s headquarter – IIG Building – 75 Giang Van Minh, Hanoi.

Founded in 1947, CIEE is one of the U.S’s leading non-governmental organizations. With over 60 year experience, CIEE’s main fields of operation are outbound international education experiences for university students, faculty and administrators, study, work, and internship opportunities for people coming into the U.S.

At the meeting, two parties reached an agreement on cooperation program. Under the cooperation program, CIEE will provide IIG Vietnam with Bachelor of English and TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language) certified teachers for teaching at universities, colleges and foreign language centers in Vietnam. Intensively trained and certified for TOEIC & TOEFL – oriented teaching method by ETS (Educational Testing Service), native teachers with high academic record, responsibility and commitment will help

Vietnamese students acquire English knowledge and inspire Vietnamese students to make effort in foreign language learning.

IIG VIETNAM ENTERS CO-OPERATION CONTRACT WITH THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (TUEBA)

On May 23rd 2011, IIG Vietnam officially signed the cooperation agreement with Thai Nguyen university of Economics and Business Administration (TUEBA). Under the agreement, IIG Vietnam will coordinate with TUEBA to implement international - standard English and IT tests at the university.

The signing ceremony between Mr. Doan Hong Nam – IIG Vietnam’s President and Associate Pro. Dr. Tran Chi Thien – the university’s Rector was witnessed by many representatives from the univesity falcuties and departments and reporters as well.

Under the cooperation agreement, IIG Vietnam – the country representative of ETS will coordinate with TUEBA to standardize English language for the university’s students by the TOEIC test – Test of English for International Communication for non-native English speakers. Accordingly, TOEIC will be used for TUEBA students’ English assessment, placement tests and graduation criterion. With an aim to standardize TUEBA English teachers on TOEIC-oriented teaching method, a teacher training course will be held for TUEBA teachers.

Besides English standard, IIG Vietnam also introduced IC3 (Internet and Computing Core Certification) - the international Certificate on basic computer and internet skills issued by Certiport and MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) – the worldwide recognized Office Certificate.

SANAKO LEADERS WORK WITH VIETNAM GENERAL DEPARTMENT OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING

On June 8th 2011, Sanako Corporation senior leaders and IIG Vietnam’s representatives had a meeting with Vietnam General Department of Vocational Training (GDVT) about the forthcoming co-operation on improving and enhancing Vietnam’s vocational training quality.

In the meeting, Mr. Klaus Koponen – Senior Vice President, Sanako Corporation expressed his interest in joining hands to enhance Vietnam’s vocational training quality and wished to tighten the long-term co-operation with GDVT Vietnam in vocational training and support GDVT in enhancing English training quality by using LAB solutions; providing training course on modern teaching methods and applying IT in English teaching as well. On behalf of GDVT, Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung expressed his warmest thanks to Sanako Corporation’s support in Vietnam’s vocational training and he strongly believed in the two sides further co-operation in the coming time. Applying IT in teaching in general and foreign language in particular is the discernible trend in the world and becomes more prevalent in developing countries like Vietnam. In many countries, electric curriculum has been replacing traditional curriculum and this will positively affect Vietnam vocational training in terms of foreign language and IT training in the future.

IIG VIETNAM ENTERS CO-OPERATION AGREEMENT WITH NOTHERN VOCATIONAL COLLEGE OF ECONOMICS AND TECHNIQUE (NVCET)

On June 23rd 2011, IIG Vietnam officially signed the cooperation agreement with Nothern Vocational College of Economics and Technique (NVCET). Under the agreement, IIG Vietnam will coordinate with NVCET to implement international - standard IT test at the college.

Represent at the signing ceremony are Mr. Doan Hong Nam – IIG Vietnam’s President, Mr. Pham Van Trung – the college’s Rector and representatives of the college’s falcuties and departments and reporters as well.

Under the agreement, IIG Vietnam – the country representative of Certiport will cooperate with NVCET to implement and administer the IT international standard - IC3 (Internet Computing Core Certification) - the international Certificate on basic computer and internet skills. Accordingly, IIG Vietnam will coordinate with NVCET to implement IC3 instead of the current basic computing training program for all NVCET students.

Besides, to help NVCET in standardizing IT teachers on international standard IT teaching method, IIG Vietnam will organize a training course for NVCET IT teachers. In addition, IIG Vietnam and Certiport experts will Vietnamize IC3 textbooks with a view to supporting NVCET in teaching and training students.

IIG VIETNAM ENTERS CO-OPERATION CONTRACT WITH DONG AN POLYTECHNIC On June 25th 2011, the co-operation signing ceremony between IIG Vietnam and Dong An Polytechnic was sucessfully held at Dong An Polytechnic. At the same day, TOEIC – the international standard for English proficiency assessment seminar was also organized to introduce the international TOEIC test to Dong An Polytechnic students. The co-operation contract between IIG Vietnam and Dong An Polytechnic has enabled Dong An Polytechnic students to take the TOEIC tests right at their school.

Newly established in 2008, Dong An’s Managing Board has been fully aware of the importance of applying international assessment standards especially the international English standard – the TOEIC. Taking this into due consideration, Dong An polytechnic officially released 350 TOEIC requirement for graduates. To fulfill the set standard it is necessary to be followed by a set criteria for training: Quality first; Standardized training program; Standardized teacher - and – student ratio; Standardized classrooms; Modern and synchronized facilities.

After the signing ceremony, the TOEIC – the international standard for English proficiency assessment seminar was also held to introduce the international TOEIC test to Dong An teachers and students. The seminar drew great attention of Dong An teachers and students. IIG Viet Nam representatives answered queries regarding TOEIC test, effective learning methods for Dong An students… After the Q&A session, Dong An students had deeper insight about the importance of English – especially the international standard English for future success.

BRIEF NEWS:

*On March 3rd 2011, Mr. Timothy Tesar – Director of Division of Enrollment Management, Valparaiso University had a meeting with Mr. Doan Hong Nam – President of IIG Vietnam – Valparaiso’s representative in Vietnam. Mr. Timothy Tesar highly appreciated IIG Vietnam’s effort in exploring and bringing opportunities for Vietnamese students to study in the U.S. especially at Valparaiso. Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Doan Hong Nam affirmed: “Valparaiso is one of the leading universities in the U.S. – the country with the most advanced education system for international students especially for Vietnamese students. In the future, the two parties will strengthen further cooperation, providing Vietnamese students with chances of learning and experiencing at Valparaiso”.

Also in the meeting, Mr. Timothy Tesar on behalf of Valparaiso granted some 50 – 100% scholarships (total value up to $ 125,000) to Vietnamese students who have excellent studying achievements. With over 150-year experience in education and training, Mr. Timothy Tesar hopes that there will be more and more Vietnamese students studying at Valparaiso.

*On 23rd May 2011, Mr. Tony Rex – Director of Sixth Form, Wakefield College, U.K. through IIG Vietnam – Wakefield College’s representative in Vietnam organized the seminar to introduce training curriculum and scholarship for Vietnamese students. Vietnamese students were interested in studying at Wakefield College. He also highly appreciated English language proficiency and studying orientation of Vietnamese students. In the seminar, Mr. Tony Rex, on behalf of Wakefield College granted up-to-33% scholarships to Vietnamese students who have excellent studying achievements and are confident in the interview. TOEIC® IN VIETNAMESE EDUCATION SYSTEM

TOEIC - ORIENTED TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOP

From 3rd to 7th April 2011, IIG Vietnam successfully organized the teacher training workshop on TOEIC Listening & Reading - oriented teaching methods for 25 English teachers from 5 colleges and universities in the Mekong Delta region, including the University of Foreign Language – Can Tho University, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vo Truong Toan University, Can Tho College and Kien Giang Community College. The three – day training workshop aimed at providing information and knowledge regarding TOEIC test in general and TOEIC – oriented teaching methods in particular.

Participating in the training workshop was a good opportunity for teachers to acquire specialist knowledge from enthusiastic and experienced trainer certified by ETS. With experience, specialist knowledge, enthusiasm, attractive and effective teaching methods, trainer provided teachers with intensive knowledge, useful information about the test as well as TOEIC test practice and effective approach to the advanced English language teaching methods. 25 learners successfully completed the course and were awarded with certificate of the completion. “We are really satisfied with the quality of the training workshop, thank the trainer for open exchange and enthusiasm in teaching, providing us with diversified and attractive activities, and informative training materials as well. The training workshop provided us with lots of information regarding TOEIC test, learning techniques and tactics for each part of the test and more importantly, adopting advanced English teaching method which will be effectively implemented in our universities. *On April 17th and June 26th 2011, Danang Branch Office - IIG Vietnam administered TOEIC tests for 100 and 320 Nha Trang University students respectively. This administration was held for Nha Trang University student graduation requirement.

*On June 3rd 2011, Danang Branch Office - IIG Vietnam sucessfully administered TOEFL ITP exam for over 30 Hue University’s post-graduate students. This has marked long-term co-operation between IIG Vietnam and Hue University in implementing English graduation requirement in Hue University’s member colleges.

*On June 15th 2011, Danang Branch Office - IIG Vietnam and MITNAPHA co-administered TOEIC tests for MITNAPHA’s students. USING TOEIC® IN QUARTER

Yen University had a meeting on how to establish English benchmark using TOEIC for Phu Yen graduates. According to Mr. Duy, the trip has brought many prospects in expanding cooperation opportunities in foreign language learning development as well as enhancing the importance of English in South Central Coastal provinces for the time being.

*On 28th June 2011, 295 English teachers from schools in Hai Duong province took part in a TOEFL ITP training course organized by IIG Viet Nam. The aim of the training is to equip teachers with information of structure, content as well as tactics to do TOEFL ITP test. With the experienced and enthusiastic trainer’s guide, all questions regarding TOEFL ITP have been answered. This is a part of the foreign language proficiency examination in the national project of foreign language innovation stage 2008 – 2020 period that has been implemented by Department of Education & Training in various provinces.

TOEIC® WITH VIETNAMESE ENTERPRISES

*On 19th March 2011, representative of HCMC Branch Office - IIG Vietnam worked with Ms. Vu Ngoc Yen Oanh – Manager, HR Department, TUV SUD PSB Vietnam – a branch of TUV SUD (Germany). Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Vu Ngoc Yen Oanh said that in the coming time TUV SUD is going to use TOEIC as an effective tool for TUV SUD staffs’ English assessment, recruitment and training as well.

*On 20th June 2011, the opening ceremony of English training course under IIG Vietnam and Petro Vietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PEVP) contract was successfully held at PEVP building. Present at the opening ceremonny were representatives of IIG Training Center and PEVP Youth Union together with 50 PEVP staff students. Speaking at the opening ceremony, PEVP representative said that to keep pace with the international working environment and globalization process in oil and gas exploration, PEVP was determined to be the pioneer in oil and gas industry applying TOEIC benchmark for the set targets. 140h – course in 2 levels: Elementary and Pre-Intermediate will equip PEVP staffs with essential knowledge and skills for enhancing English ability in international working environment with 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing. After the course, students are expected to obtain 500 TOEIC or above. With enthusiastic, qualified and experienced teachers together with professional learning environment; active and engrossed learning attitude of students, students will successfully complete the course.

TOEFL - PASSPORT TO THE WORLD

In the world, now there are the two most prevalent international English tests for studying overseas: the TOEFL & the IELTS.

Previously, there was always a considerable difference in the purpose of each test. CHAT WITH THE FIRST VIETNAMESE ACHIEVING MASTER LEVEL OF MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST (MOS)

On 23rd May 2011, Nguyen Hoa Anh became the first Vietnamese to get Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) at Master level issued by Microsoft.

Could you please tell about your feeling being the first Vietnamese to get MOS – Master level – the certificate of the overall and comprehensive assessment for all Microsoft Office skills

I am very excited, you know, being the first Vietnamese to earn MOS – Master, I feel really lucky because now I can take the exams right here in Vietnam. I did not hear about the test since its first debut in Vietnam but till the the Microsoft Office World Champion competition, I did register for the tests.

In your opinion, what advantages will the international certificate on Microsoft Office bring about for graduates and workers?

I think there are a lot of advantages for those working with computer if we can get the certificate

Firstly, it is the most prestigious certificate on Microsoft Office in the world which is certified by Microsoft. It is the test that allows users to directly interact with Microsoft Office applications, which absolutely differs from dump practice.

Secondly, the tests are in English. Hence, passing the exams also proves your English proficiency. Although you do not possess any English certificate, answering many questions in limited time also demonstrates your rich English vocabulary.

Thirdly, any individual who try to earn this certificate is also seen as the person with serious orientation on career prospect.

What do you think about the Microsoft Office World Champion 2011? What would you like to share with Vietnamese students?

In general, Microsoft Office World Champion 2011 is an interesting playground providing Vietnamese students good opportunities to compete with international students and also to improve Microsoft Office skills, an effective tool for learning and working as well.

Moreover, Vietnamese students are not used to self-studying and self-researching. For such an international Microsoft Office World Champion, self-studying is a crucial factor because we must accumulate knowledge through many channels: schooling, TV, newspapers, journals, books and internet… To win at the World Final Round, Vietnamese teams need to be well-prepared with appropriate tactics for each version (2007 or 2010) and intensive self-studying and practicing also.

Grasping the increasing English learning demands of numerous individuals and organizations for taking international English tests, IIG Training Center with quality commitment has gradually built up its reputation and prestige with TOEIC and TOEFL oriented training courses.
