DURRIE WITH HUNTING DESIGN

Durrie or Durry is a thick flat woven rug used traditionally in India as floor covering. Durries are made manually by skilled artisans on traditional horizontal or vertical looms. Durries are usually made from four type of materials i.e. cotton, wool, jute or silk and in variety of combination of these materials. In India Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Telangana are the main centers where this craft is mainly practiced. In Rajasthan pit looms are also used for weaving, in which weavers sit in a pit and feet are used for weaving. Madhya Pradesh durries are known for their sturdy characters and Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh make distinctive types of durries. The raw material is first converted in to thread then woven in to durries. Durries are made by flat weave technique using horizontal looms. They have no pile, no backing which make them reversible.

Product : Wool durrie (hunting design) Name of craft person : Sh. Rustam Shohrab Year of National Award : 2007 Medium of work : Wool, Cotton Dimension : 108 inches X 72 inches Region : Mirzapur (U.P) Time taken : 15-18 Months This Durrie with a hunting scene is an exquisite piece of art which is suited to adorn the walls of regal mansion or a heritage building .In carpets it is easy to weave hunting designs but it is almost rare to see a durrie that portrays the hunting expeditions, in all its majestic trappings. The reason is that the durrie weaver does not have the ease that the canvass of knots provides, to portray his imagination. Weaving a pictorial durrie is many times more difficult than making a carpet and only the skilled hands and extraordinary sense of proportions of the master craftsmen has brought out the images so beautifully.

TARKASHI INLAY ON WOOD

Tarkashi work is done generally on teakwood or sheesham. This art requires a great deal of

tenacity, precision and dexterity on the part of the artisan. To inlay any object, lines are drawn on

the area to be inlaid through Khatrakash, a wood piercing drill. For small designs that are circular,

a compass may also be used. Extremely fine brass wires are then hammered into these incisions

after which the object is rubbed with Khaddas or sandpaper, polished and varnished. Jewellery or

bangle boxes, door knobs, pen stands, lamps, tables or big items like doorways are adorned with

this craft. One kiwarjori takes as long as three to five months time though a small box may be

done in one or two days. The cost of the object is evaluated on the basis of the time spent and the

intricacy of the work done on it.
