Q What’s that you’re in?

a We call it a bauwagen. Before, it was

a trailer on a building site used by

construction workers as a smoking hut. We

bought it on eBay, then towed it here to the

forest outside Frankfurt – 20 miles from our

house. Now it’s our holiday home.

Q What was the bauwagen like when

you bought it?

a Grey, and in bad condition. We had to

strip it out, put in new windows and doors,

and repaint it. Cleaning it was the worst

– all those smoke stains took a lot of

scrubbing to get out. But we fixed it all in

about four or five weekends.

Q Just how small is it?

a It’s 5 x 2 metres, but that’s enough for us.

Q Who is ‘us’?

a My family – my husband Matthias, he’s

the one that cleared this little plot of

woodland. And the kids – Jan, 18, Anna, 15,

and Inga, five.

Q And you all manage to squeeze in?

a Of course! The most we’ve had in here

for dinner is eight.

Q It sounds so basic…

a That’s the beauty of it!

Q Why not simply buy a caravan?

a We had a caravan before and we really

don’t want another one. You are so limited

in what you can do with the interior of a

caravan. The sink is fixed in place, you can’t

change it. With this we could make anything

from it – we just had the shell.

Q Isn’t bigger better?

a What can you do with more space that

you can’t do in here? We’d only spend our

weekends cleaning it all.

Q But where do you put your stuff?

a What stuff? When you can only bring

what you need, you start to realise just

what is actually important in life. We’ve

decluttered our house by moving some of

our furniture to the bauwagen.

Q But what about personal space?

a Ha – you don’t really get personal space

here. If you want to be by yourself, you

have to go for a walk.

Q What’s the attraction of being

up here in the countryside?

a The peace and quiet. We love being so

close to nature. You go out the door and

you’re practically in the forest. You can walk

for kilometres without seeing anybody. Our

house is next to the autobahn, so it is very

noisy. Up here the air is so clean.

Q Is there anything you miss about

your house when you’re here?

a The bathroom! Here we have to brush

our teeth in the kitchen sink.

Q What couldn’t you live without for

a weekend at the bauwagen?

a For Matthias, it would be his chainsaw,

for Jan his guitar, Anna needs a book

and ingredients for dinner, for Inga,

definitely her teddy Charlie, and for me,

our dog Anton.

Rina Kremmling’s holiday home might be more of a hut, but it opens out on to a much wider world. Getting away from it all has never been so compact

Q What was the idea behind

the design of the kitchen?

a To be efficient with space and

resources. We took the cabinet

frames from our kitchen at home

but added new doors. Our

appliances are basic, a two-

ring hob, but no fridge or cooker.

We need space to prepare fresh

ingredients and store two pots. In

the other cupboards we each

have a spare set of clothes, and

essentials like candles, cleaning

stuff, the first-aid kit… ● ruBrik/

Q So you all eat at the table?

a We all do everything at the

table – cooking, eating, playing

games. Inga uses it for drawing,

Jan plays poker. Life takes place

around our table. ● lanni chair

Q What’s the most important

thing in the bauwagen?

a The sofa bed – we sit on it,

Inga lies on it to watch DVDs, we

sleep on it and it gives us extra

seating when we all eat at the

table. We struggled getting it

in here – the sofa bed is almost

exactly the same width as the

bauwagen – I don’t think we’ll

ever get it out again. ● meldal

Q How did you find a place

for everything?

a We put in shelves that reach to

the ceiling. Luckily the bauwagen

is quite tall – taller than a

caravan, at least. ● Östen stÖdis

Q Can you be a happy cook

in a kitchen this size?

a Our secret is hooks – they keep

cups, pots and utensils close by

but off the precious work surface.

Our matching storage jars bring a

sense of order and our clamp

light doesn’t take up any space,

but helps the cook to see what

they are doing! ● kVart wall/

Q Small space, little chance

for change?

a Not at all! I’m always updating

the curtains and textiles. The kids

joke about how often I change

things round. That’s one reason

why I love IKEA, it makes it so

easy to change what you already

have. ● kaJsa rand cushion cover

Q Do you all play

instruments?

a Yes – we’re a very musical

family and up here we can make

as much noise as we want without

anyone complaining! We often

play together, particularly me on

the accordion and Anna with her

violin. The problem with the violin

is it is expensive so we don’t want

to keep it up here, but there is

usually a guitar around.

Q How do you cook in here?

a It’s difficult, especially with three

of us cooking – if you’re sitting

inside the bauwagen, you’ll soon

be shooed out. Not that we can

make anything complicated

anyway – we’ve only got a few

pots and pans and we don’t even

have a fridge! It means we have

to plan ahead, as you would for a

picnic. We often prepare food at

home and heat it up here. Anna

makes pasta, salad, pancakes…

we try to use only fresh ingredients

and avoid convenience food. An

unexpected bonus for our diets!

the thingswe do

Q Tell us about the stuff we

can’t see?

a There are quite a few things

we have to have here that

aren’t very attractive and we

rarely use – like Matthias’ tools.

A shelf high above the door is a

handy hiding place.

Q Does having just enough

space make you picky about

what furniture you use?

a Yes. Everything here multitasks

– the cupboards, sofa bed, dining

table. If you want to be a bit of

furniture in our bauwagen, you’ll

have to work for it!

Q Any tricks you’ve learned

to make a room feel more

spacious?

a The simplest? Using white

furniture. And glossy surfaces that

reflect the light in the same way

mirrors do. ● nÄstVed rug £11.73

always changing. sometimes

the kids sleep in here, sometimes

Matthias and I do. We usually

bring our camper van up here

with us so there’s always a

have that flexibility.

Q After a long day, is it hard

work setting up the bed?

a It’s actually pretty easy, with

drawers underneath to stash

bedding and cushions.

‘the bauwagen has an entrance

porch but it’s not just a space next to

the door – with shelving fitted to the

walls, we can also use it as a sort of

1. We’d like a more organic

feeling in our living room. We’re

no hippies – but some plants are

nice, aren’t they?

2. We have loads of books and

magazines, and a few hundred

CDs all over the place. We’d

prefer them all together.

3. Our sofa looks great but it’s

not comfy for two people.

4. We inherited the ceiling lights

and we can’t stand them!

5. The living room is for relaxing

– but it’s also Kai’s office. How

do we separate its two uses?

On 28 Feb, at 10:01, Kai wrote: Eva and I talked a lot about the idea of a makeover and we are not sure if our apartment fits with the ‘superstylish’ ones in the magazine, though we don’t know exactly how these homes looked before the IKEa experts visited :-). Ours is only 67 sq m! We’d still love to do it, don’t get me wrong – but we don’t want to disappoint you.

On 3 March, at 12:43, IKEA FAMILY LIVE wrote: don’t worry! We really like your apartment and your style. We like to feature real homes in the magazine. yours has an edgy, urban style – it’s different and interesting.

On 4 March, at 15:53, Kai wrote: hey, that’s good news! I do have a few questions :-). do you need to know what we think about certain areas of our home? We have tons of ideas about what to do in our apartment (as everyone does, right?). here’s our wishlist…

2. We have loads of books and

3. Our sofa looks great but it’s

4. We inherited the ceiling lights

MaKINg IT haPPEN

It took a week to transform Kai

and Eva’s apartment – from

discussing the changes with the

stylist, clearing out the unwanted

furniture, travelling to IKEa

to pick up new products and then

assembling them. after that, things

began to take shape and the

photographer arrived, followed

by the 360º cameraman, to

document the process. Phew!

On 17 March, at 15.08, Kai wrote: hey guys – what a week! When we were imagining the changes we’d make, we were really excited. at that point it was a ‘couch makeover’ – you think big when things are hypothetical. Then when Finola arrived and started breaking everything down to individual decisions, reality hit! We were really blown away by how much is involved in a makeover – emotionally as well as physically. Even when you want a change, you don’t realise just how attached you are to your old things. We had to keep telling ourselves that we would end up with a better apartment. When it was finished it looked very stylish, but I didn’t feel completely comfortable in it. Every house, however amazing, takes time to become your home. The makeover has given us a new apartment – the next stage is making it feel lived in. The evening spent together on the big – and very comfy – new sofa was a good first step in getting to know our new abode. It’s been an adventure, and the adventure continues… ;-)

Orson Welles

‘Brains on the inside and beauty on the outside – that’s the philosophy behind IKeA kitchens,’ explains IKeA kitchen expert Anna Turlova. ‘The kitchen is the hub of the home, where everyone wants to be. It’s where families meet to snack, eat together, chat and hatch plans; friends drop by for a gossip, guests are entertained and feasts are prepared. Make your kitchen look and feel great, and everyone, including you, will want to spend time there. Take a moment to think about the activities that go on in your kitchen so you can make changes that will ensure it is as easy and enjoyable for you to use as possible. Decide what you need to alter to make cooking, cleaning and storing less of a chore – and in the process you’ll give yourself more time to spend with your family and friends.’

Start getting the best out of your kitchen. Log on to IKeA.co.uk/kitchenplanner or head in store to talk to an IKeA expert.l ABSTRAKT/FAKTUM kitchen units Red RUBRIK/FAKTUM wall cabinets Stainless steel

How Green IS your KItcHen? Appliances are for making life

easier – but make sure you

choose ones that are easy on

the environment too. IKEA is

always striving to make its

appliances more energy

efficient, and during 2009, all

its ovens, dishwashers, fridges

and freezers will become a

rated by the EU classification

system for energy efficiency.

SoaK up tHe Sun the sturdy, tropical acacia tree is perfect for outdoor

summer furniture. But where does the wood come from? ‘Our goal is to

source all wood from independently verified, responsibly managed

forests,’ says IKEA forestry manager Sofie Beckham. Go in store for the

full range.

reap wHat you Sow every

year, 14.6 million hectares of

forest disappear globally – that’s

an area the size of 50 football

pitches every minute! but IKea is

doing its bit to turn things around.

In the past decade, well over one

million trees have been planted in

Borneo thanks to the IKEA Sow a

Seed Foundation. This is a major

project to protect and maintain

18,500 hectares of rainforest in

Malaysia, and also offer support

to the local community.

Swap the synthetic chemicals in your

cleaning cupboard for the new SVABBA

soft soap. This multi-purpose cleaner is

made from the purest pine oil from

Swedish forests, tackling grease and

the storytellersour story takes place in a land called sweden. It’s a story with no beginning and no

end. It’s the story of IKea ps – the latest in IKea design. Meet the people who’ve

been searching for the roots of a better life at home. they’ve got some stories to tell.

Five IKea ps never ending Design stories…

MARCUS ARVONEN’S STORY

You designed? The IKEA PS

MASKROS pendant lamp (£65),

the IKEA PS BRYGGA swivel easy

chair (£249) and the IKEA PS

SPRAKA spice mill (£17.99)

Which design best combines

beauty and brains? The portable

flame, allowing the possibility of

producing fire anywhere. Also

known as the lighter! A smart and

beautiful solution we now take for

granted. It must have been magic

when it was invented.

What do you wish was real?

Global consensus, a sustainable

world, human rights, longer

battery time on my phone, a

completed home renovation and

10kg less weight!

What new thing would you like to

try? Being a daddy. It will be a

big thing, but I’m looking forward

to ‘trying’!

‘It’s all about honest raw materials,’

explains IKea ps product developer

Johan ejdemo, left, with project

manager peter Klinkert. ‘the IKea ps

KarlJohan side table (below, £45)

is solid pine and the IKea ps sKal

dish (£25) is an homage to bamboo,

a super material – fast growing,

absorbing more co2 than trees and

drawing pollutants out of the soil

with roots that prevent erosion.’

storIes oF roots

GUNNEL: I enjoyed digging into the idea of Swedishness. What is

it? How are these ancient ideas relevant in a modern sense?PETER: In fact, I think there is a

desire for products that stay in

touch with traditional craftmanship

and the myths and stories we grew up with. EHLÉN: Wherever we take modern design, if it’s not rooted in

our history then it lacks meaning. Identity is born from our roots.

MARCUS: And letting those roots grow into something new, just like the IKEA PS SELMA chair (right, £249) and its changeable covers that each tell a Swedish tale.

storIes oF wooD

PETER: We are fans of wood, but

thoughtful fans, wouldn’t you say?

JOHAN: Wood is an incredible renewable material. And look at the wood we use. Many woods react in an unpredictable way when they are used, making industrial production difficult, and

ending in wood getting wasted.MARCUS: You mean you’re sourcing us bad wood?!JOHAN: This is not bad wood, just less uniform. Why waste it?

Why not celebrate its unique non-conformity in the same way

we now celebrate the irregularly shaped fruit and vegetables that

used to be rejected?

storIes oF teXtIles

GUNNEL: Kazuyo Nomura’s VIRKA textiles remind me of a spider’s web in the depths of the Swedish forest.

JOHAN: And yet it’s made from a fabric considered ordinary –

embroidered polyester on a non-woven cellulose base. The twist is that we washed the base away in the finishing

process, leaving a kind of modern lace. It shows it’s possible to do new things with unsurprising materials.

EHLÉN JOHANSSON’S STORY What did you design? The IKEA PS SINKA cabinet (above, £189) and the IKEA PS SLINGRA chair (right, £69).

What does the Swedish summer smell of? Nights when dew is on the grass and the sun is just rolling on the edge of the horizon.

Which design best combines beauty and brains? Intelligent function is hard to separate from beauty. Which is which? I would recommend taking a closer look at mother nature if you doubt intelligent beauty exists.

If you were a tree which tree would you be? A beech tree in early spring, a birch in the summer with wind in my leaves, and a pine tree at Christmas with a star on top. But most of all I think I would choose to be an oak tree so I could live to see people come and go over centuries.

Which object in your home can you not live without? Life would be lousy without an electric kettle!

Does design matter? At its best design can make life more convenient, agreeable, happy and beautiful!

I think there is

a little collector

inside all of us...

1The new bathroom ranges are as smart on the inside

and appealing on the outside as IKEA kitchens. And they’re just as easy to achieve with the new bathroom planner at IKEA.co.uk/bathroom. Pick the finish, the cabinets, the basin,

then the taps, and you’re done!

2 You can’t start planning until you know what you need.

Make a list of everything in your bathroom, however small. This will give you an idea of how much storage you require.

3 Think about where you want to put everything.

Bulky items should be stored down low, while things you use regularly should be accessible on open shelves, and medicines kept safe and high up.

4 Use every bit of available space – especially above

the head and below the waist. Under the basin, on the backs of doors and above the bath are all areas that are often wasted.

5 Pick clever storage. Both the new GODMORGON

and LILLÅNGEN ranges have specially designed accessories for their cabinets to keep everything in its place. There’s no point being beautiful on the outside but a mess inside.

6 If you fight for space in the

morning, a double basin means two people can win the battle. Not enough room for a big basin? LILLÅNGEN comes in three compact sizes with clip-on accessories and moveable trays.

‘We’re equals everywhere except the kitchen – I’m happy to let Ed be the boss there!’

Paris. It’s a city Muriel and Ed love. Not just in

the spring time, but all the time. In summer

when they eat breakfast on the balcony in the

sunshine with their son Nino. Every time they

open the door to their small fifth-floor

apartment and see the light-filled home

they’ve created. It’s a city that has opened up

new possibilities – in their home and their lives.

‘Five years ago I was in London and skint. I lived

with Ed and I loved him, but life was a struggle,’

says Muriel. ‘So we made a decision to find new

jobs – even though it meant moving here.’ The

couple’s time in Paris has been an adventure –

different homes, trying to start a magazine, Nino.

‘We’ve done so much because we’ve felt free to.’

Even their apartment was a leap. ‘When I first saw

it I couldn’t picture it as my home. It had heavy

curtains, bad linoleum, and was so claustrophobic.

But Ed looked at it with different eyes and made

me see its potential.’ When you look at things from

a new angle, life can change for the better.

MAkE iT yOuRs! 100s of

ideas in store to put your

stamp on your home

This home is designed to be welcoming. ‘Some

houses look pretty in pictures but when you

visit, you don’t know what to do with yourself.

A home has to be a space you enjoy being in,’ says

Ed. For Ed and Muriel that means cosy, yet airy.

‘The first thing we did was open up the space by

knocking down a wall. We’ve made the most of the

light this lets into the flat by keeping things simple

and stripping back.’ Bare wood floors with rugs for

warmth, curtainless windows, white-washed walls.

‘Both of us bring decorating ideas to our home,’

says Muriel. ‘Ed’s good with light. He arranges

lamps to fit what you want to do – read, relax –

and doesn’t use ceiling lights. For him, they stop

you seeing light’s ability to alter a room’s mood.

I try to make our home individual. I like objects

with history and texture. I like plants and love art’s

uniqueness.’ What’s not so vital? ‘TV – we’ve never

had one in this flat, it didn’t seem to fit,’ says Ed.

ideas in store to put your

stamp on your home

‘TV – we’ve never

had one in this flat, it didn’t seem to fit,’ says Ed.

too much. But what we do have, has

spirit! Like the leather chair we rescued

from the street and our sofa piled with

colourful cushions to welcome you in

and give the room a focal point.’

The kitchen is Ed’s favourite place, but Muriel

chose it. Ed likes it because it’s functional,

Muriel chose it because it feels unique.

‘I was really pleased to find a kitchen in this muted

colour at IKEA. It suits us. A white kitchen would

be too cold, and I’m sure I would get tired of a

bright colour like red,’ says Muriel. Their kitchen

is put to good use: ‘We always cook. Muriel’s

current favourite is ratatouille, mine is squid

sautéed in tomatoes. We also encourage Nino to

cook with us.’ In their old flat, the kitchen was

small and impractical, but they were renting so

couldn’t change it. ‘When we bought this place, the

kitchen was a narrow corridor. Knocking a wall

down gave us an eat-in kitchen,’ says Ed. With a

table that fits three, the family can eat together.

‘We never eat on trays! And our sharp knives are

our most trusted utensils,’ says Ed. ‘Unlike the red

kettle that looks better than it works!’ says Muriel.

Nino was born when Muriel and Ed lived in

their old apartment. ‘When we were planning

to move, we put a balcony and at least one

south-facing window on our wish list. Nino

now has both.’ says Muriel.

‘Nino experiences life through two cultures – that

of my French family and Ed’s British one.

Encouraging him to be open-minded is important.

We take him to exhibitions and buy him disposable

cameras. The first pictures he ever took are framed

on his wall. Framing them is our way of telling

him that things are valuable as long they’re

important to you.’

‘Nino is master of his room, but we encourage him

to clear up, and under-bed drawers make it easy for

him to get to things without our help,’ Ed explains.

‘And he doesn’t keep toys he no longer plays with.’

‘I love the history of things and the stories

they tell. Sometimes, when I think it only

took us six weeks to erase all sign of this

apartment’s former owners, it shocks me.

They had lived here for 35 years!’ says Muriel.

So how do you keep a sense of yourselves in the

apartment? ‘Ed and I are careful and instinctive

about the things we add and remove. Comfort,

practicality and aesthetics are important to us

both, and we keep those three things in mind.’

‘Life at home should be easy,’ Ed agrees. ‘The

things you live with should be arranged so no extra

energy is needed to do the things you love. We love

to read, and we can do that comfortably all over

this flat. We love to cook, and preparing meals in

our kitchen is a pleasure. We enjoy entertaining,

and it takes little more than lighting a few candles

to set the right mood.’ No fuss, just fun!

Tell us about the new safety

concept at IKEA

At IKEA we care about all aspects

of our customers’ family life. Safety

is one of five core product groups

at the IKEA FAMILY shop, and we

want to pass on our obsession for

safety to help our customers lead

better protected lives at home.

Is there more to the range than

child safety?

Yes! We have recently extended

our range to include products to

protect you and your home from

fire and intrusion. We noticed that

most people nowadays have

smoke detectors, but no means of

putting out small fires. That’s why

we’re offering a fire blanket and

two sizes of fire extinguisher.

Insurance companies often give

you a bonus for having one. We’ve

also added door chains to help

stop uninvited guests, so we’re

going all out to protect your home

in every possible way.

What products are planned for

the future?

IKEA is planning to provide home

insurance… watch this space!

Hanna explains how two books from IKEA help get the safety

message across

‘These new books are packed with advice on how to make life safer at

home. Do It Yourself Safe At Home is for adults, and Safe At Home is a

children’s playbook about a polar bear family. This gives simple

advice, explained in a fun way, about how to make the home safer.

You open a flap on the spot where you would place a particular safety

product, and lift it to reveal the reason you need, for example, a smoke

detector. It’s a brilliant way to explain to children why they need to be

careful, and how they can prevent an accident. Given this knowledge,

I think children can help keep themselves, and their homes, safe.’

CUT IT OUT! World Environment Day is on 5 June and The CarbonNeutral Company

is asking us to ‘Cut out a Kilo’ of CO2. If everyone in the UK took part

on the day, it would save 44,000 tonnes of CO2. Here’s how to do your

bit: 1. At home: ditch the tumble dryer for one load of washing and

dry outside. 2. On your plate: cut down on meat. Eat lots of roots and

shoots in National Vegetarian Week, 18 to 24 May. www.vegsoc.org

or every soft toy sold during last year’s festive

season, IKEA Social Initiative donated £1 to

UNICEF and Save the Children projects. Last

year alone, a total of €5.3 million was raised

– a huge increase from €4.2 million in 2007.

‘Each soft toy bought by IKEA customers plays a

vital role in achieving a better future for children,’

says Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, secretary general,

Save the Children International. ‘The lives of

children on three continents, from Albania to China

to the Ivory Coast, have been improved by this

campaign, with tens of thousands of young people

now able to go to school.’

This year, the support that IKEA Social Initiative

gives to education projects shows no signs of

slowing. According to Philip O’Brien, director,

Private Fundraising and Partnerships, UNICEF,

having access to an education is a fundamental

human right. ‘When we ensure that children – girls

and boys – can receive a rights-based, quality

education that is rooted in gender equality, we

create a ripple effect of opportunity that impacts

generations to come.’

The message is clear. £1 really is a fortune!

…to everyone who contributed to the IKEA annual Soft Toy Campaign!

By going in store and buying a cuddly dog, mouse or rabbit last

November and December, you have helped to improve the lives of

thousands of children around the world. Since the scheme began

four years ago, it has raised an impressive €16.6 million

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Like many young girls, 17-year-old

Saba* liked making plans for the

future. But life in Shahdara, on the

outskirts of Lahore in Pakistan, is a

challenge. At 15, Saba was forced

into the sex trade to earn money

to feed her family. And her story is

far from unique. In this region,

poverty and unemployment push

lots of children out on to the streets.

With the support of UNICEF

through IKEA Social Initiative

funding, Vite-n-Hope’s daycare

centre in Shahdara now provides

200 vulnerable children with

education and counselling.

Saba has learned how to read

and write. But, more importantly

for her, she had her sister Sheeba*

enrolled in the centre. ‘I don’t want

her to suffer like I did.’

Thanks to your generosity,

children that visit Vite-n-Hope

are able to acquire the skills

necessary to become productive

members of their community.

IKEA FAMILY IS… About You

SMALL SpAcE, bIG IdEASSome issues ago, I remember

reading about a couple who

had decorated their caravan.

Working on our own caravan,

we are now looking for ideas

and inspiration. please help.

Sandrine daven, Switzerland

Time flies… it was the summer

2006 issue! I’ll send it to you. In

this issue you can get tips from

Mattias and Rina’s bauwagen on

p4, and you can always find ideas

for small spaces in the magazine.

tELL ME MoRE!

I want to know your thoughts on life at home

and what we feature in the magazine. Email me

at [email protected]

HAnGInG ARound the hallway in my new apartment is so narrow I couldn’t fit in any wardrobes. My solution was to create this storage from an EXpEdIt shelf. All my friends have commented on it and want to know where I got it.

Jana Wohlien, Germany

Nice idea! And with a super design. Personalised products can really be inspiring for a lot of people, so keep them coming. I will send you

a nice book for even more inspiration.

You will have to wait until the first week of

September for the next issue. I’ll send you

an inspirational book so the waiting time

won’t feel too long.

coMInG SoonI’ve just read the magazine, which I think

has only two shortcomings – it has too few

pages and there are too few issues. When

is the next issue out?

belinda van der Wijngaart, netherlands

EASt MEEtS WEStMy husband and I are both in

our sixties and we want to share

some smart small-space ideas

with you. With the help of IKEA

and feng shui, we have created

homes in Shanghai and Sweden

that feel twice as big as they are.

bo Arderup, china

How great! Clever ideas for small

spaces are always popular with

our readers. Let’s keep in touch.

GEt InSpIREd!I’ve been an IKEA fan since I was a child and find the

real lives of other homeowners in IKEA FAMILY LIVE

so inspiring. I use IKEA fabrics to produce clothes

– check out my design.

dirk May, Germany

What a beautiful dress! You will be happy to hear that

there will be even more fabrics to choose from next

year. Keep me updated with your creations.
