Case Study: Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist. She led hundreds of

enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad.

Books

A biography of the 19th century woman who escaped slavery and helped many other slaves get to freedom on the URR.

Who Was Harriet Tubman?---Yona Zeldis

Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Caldecott Honor Book)

This poetic book is a resounding tribute to Tubman's strength, humility, and devotion. With proper reverence, Weatherford and Nelson do justice to the woman who, long ago, earned over and over the name Moses.

PoetryHarriet Tubmanby Eloise Greenfield

Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuffWasn't scared of nothing neitherDidn't come in this world to be no slaveAnd wasn't going to stay one either

"Farewell!" she sang to her friends one nightShe was mighty sad to leave 'emBut she ran away that dark, hot nightRan looking for her freedom

She ran to the woods and she ran through the woodsWith the slave catcher right behind herAnd she kept on going till she got to the NorthWhere those mean men couldn't find her

Nineteen times she went back SouthTo get three hundred othersShe ran for her freedom nineteen timesTo save black sisters and brothers

Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuffWasn't scared of nothing neitherDidn't come in this world to be no slaveAnd didn't stay one eitherAnd didn't stay one either

Because many slaves knew the secret meanings of these songs, they could be used to signal many things. Harriet Tubman used the song “Wade in the Water” to tell escaping slaves to get off the trail and into the water to make sure the dogs slavecatchers used couldn’t sniff out their trail. People walking through water did not leave a scent trail that dogs could follow. The words of "Wade in the Water."

Chorus: Wade in the Water, wade in the water children. Wade in the Water. God's gonna trouble the water.

Who are those children all dressed in Red? God's gonna trouble the water. Must be the ones that Moses led. God's gonna trouble the water.

Chorus.

Who are those children all dressed in White? God's gonna trouble the water. Must be the ones of the Israelites. This website has a few songs relating to Harriet TubmanGod's gonna trouble the water.
