Thank you everyone for making the Meet & Greet such a great success! It is nice to put a face with a name and a great piece of art work. Congratulations! The weather cooperated and we had a good turn out with several new members joining the league. All of our member’s creative accomplishments are equally important, but I would like to bring one category to your attention. One of our new members is a 3-dementioal artist in woodworking. Another artist brought a very impressive freestanding piece. The reason I am mentioning this is that I am planning the area to showcase the 3-dementional art at the Membership Show in May. As you all know, presentation is everything! Therefore, all you potters, china painters, sculptors and more, get your pieces ready and send your registration in by the end of April. There needs to be at least six individuals in a category for cash awards. Also, just a reminder, the photography collection will be clustered together with its own judge. After seeing the samples of all your talents, I know that we are going to have a great show that the public will love, and you will have made it so!

In an effort to provide instructional workshops in areas where there would be sufficient interest, those at the Meet & Greet requested the following in order of greatest to least interest: beginning watercolor, advanced watercolor, oil painting and drawing (equal), beginning colored pencil, and the remaining of equal interest, Chinese brush painting, clay sculpture and pastels. Thank you for your input. Thank you for all the yummy cookies and sweet treats, the borrowed easels, and the help with the clean-up. Thank you for your commitment to Illinois Art League. Now, focus on getting your pieces ready and sending your registration form to me by April, 30th for the Membership Show, May, 9th. The form and instructions are included in this newsletter. May your ideas and inspirations flow and materialize by your hand.

Members in the News:Todd Snyder- East Peoria artist Todd Snyder has a work accepted into the 2013 Galex 47 National Exhibition at the Galesburg Civic Art Center, 114 East Main St, Galesburg, IL. Snyder’s painting, “Hatch” depicts an abstracted front view of an early 20th century land ship done in oil on canvas with the exhibition running from March 16 through April 7.

Vin Luong was a past board member and instructor for the Illinois Art League. He will be missed by the art community of Central Illinois and the world.

Vinh V. Luong, 46, of Peoria passed away at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill.

Vinh was born Sept. 10, 1966, in Saigon, Vietnam, to Siu Hong and Mien Le Luong. He married Jessamyn Urban on May 27, 2006, in Peoria, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Surviving are his wife, Jessamyn of Peoria; his mother, Mien Le of Peoria; three brothers, Shun (Sau Ho) Leung of Peoria, Kam (Guen Yuk Kwan) Leung of Hong Kong and Jackie (Samantha) Leung of Texas; one sister, Jasmine (Paul) Nguyen of Peoria; three nieces; and three nephews.

Vinh was a well-known and highly accomplished artist in the Peoria area. His works included murals at many area residences and businesses. Some of his most prominent works include his murals at One World Cafe and the Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.

Vinh also taught art at his studio in the Contemporary Art Center, and he will live on in the wonderful art he created.

BE ACCEPTED ON RECEIVING DAY, MAY 9. DivisionsThe following are guidelines. Entrants will place themselves in the division which best describes them. Professional: A person who holds a degree in art or teaches and/or receives a major part of income from his/her art, or has achieved the highest standards of excellence in his/her artwork, or has previously shown in the Professional Division.Semi-Professional: One who is interested in showing and selling his/her artwork. Has a high standard of professionalism. If an entrant in the Semi-professional Division wins 3 cash awards in IAL exhibits that person must move up to the Professional Division.Amateur: A person who is a beginner or does artwork as a hobby or for personal satisfaction. Amateurs may enter any of their work, whether created in a class under instruction, from photos or original work. If possible designate the source of the idea, image or design on the entry form. You may write “Original to the Artist’ if the work is totally original.If an entrant in the Amateur Division wins 3 cash awards in IAL exhibits that person must move up to the Semi-Professional Division.

CategoriesThese are the categories artists may enter: Under Glass, Not Under Glass, Three Dimensional Art, Portraits, Photography. There must be at least 6 participants in a category for cash awards to be given.

General RulesDimensions to the outside edge of the frame may not exceed 37 inches. Triptychs entered as a single work must meet the same requirements. Wet paintings will not be accepted. All hanging entries must be mounted with picture wire and screw eyes used for hanging. Other hanging devices may be rejected.

Illinois Art League retains the right to reject or remove from the show any work found improper in subject matter or in violation of any rule. Any prizes and ribbons will be revoked.

NOTE: Works entered in the membership show must have been produced within the last two (2) years and not previously exhibited in an IAL membership show. No responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged entries will be accepted by the Illinois Art League or the Village of Peoria Heights.

This year’s show will again be held in conjunction with the Peoria Heights Chamber of Commerce and the Art Fair to be held on the Tower Park Plaza. We anticipate a great viewing audience for this year’s event.

Gratuities Artists will be charged a 20% commission on artwork sold during the show so prices should be adjusted accordingly. An area will be provided for members participating in the show to sell small paintings (8” x 10” maximum), three dimensional art, prints and cards. A 20% commission will be charged on all sales.

Entry FeeNon-refundable entry fees are $20.00 for 1 entry, $30.00 for 2 entries and $40.00 for three entries. Each artist may submit three entries. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE PREREGISTERED. NO UNREGISTERED ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED ON May 9. Deadline for Preregistration will be April 30.

Receiving and Pick UpArtwork may be presented on Thursday, May 9 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. No work will be accepted after that time unless special arrangements are made ahead of the date that the art is due for hanging. Work must be picked up on Saturday, May 11 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Artwork cannot be removed before that time. Illinois Art League or City of Peoria Heights are not responsible for artwork left after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.
