The weather was perfect for a ride and eating out- side. Update on members: Jackie and Dwight Mannon are in assisted living for now; Gene Grafton fractured a small bone in his left ankle; Jackson Mohr (Johnnie Mohr’s grandson) is at Mayo Clinic for a liver transplant; Jerry and Mary Anne Johnson have gone back to their home in Arizona; and we miss seeing Larry and Nita because of health reasons. Herb Stinemates Memorial Services were on July 23, in the Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood, IL. It was a very nice ceremony with military honors being accorded. I know Rosy appreciated the supportive turn-out of H2 mem- bers paying their respects for Herb.

Our July coffee was held at Tres Café in Galesburg, with 14 attending. The weather was iffy but turned nicer by evening. We all 4-wheeled it to the coffee for a meal with good conversations and fellowship. I think all made it home before anymore storms came through. A taste of fall weather this week has been a welcome relief although that is a hint that summer riding season is growing shorter. We haven’t been riding enough but did get a good ride in this past week. Last Saturday our group rode to Bernadotte for lunch running on

county roads from New London to Bernadotte. Our group of 14 had a good lunch, watched the humming birds flitting around the feeders, had a leisurely walk in the park along the Spoon River, and relaxed. From there 10 of us on 6 bikes rode to Canton for ice cream at Hannam’s Dairy Dream via another black top and route 100. Their specialty is lemon ice cream. We all had our favorite ice cream snack, chatted some more, and then headed for home. It was a great day for riding. Thanks to everyone that attended. On a personal note, Carolyn and I first met Herb and Rosy at a Safety Week End held in Pontiac. We were new to the H2 chapter and had a motel room for the event. Steve Boock approached me when arriving at the motel with a request that we consider sharing our room with the Stinemates as they could not book a room. We agreed, and the arrangement went well. We became good friends sharing a room with them on many occasions. Herb loved to plan routes for chapter trips; he always said, “Tell me where we are going, and I will plan the route and lead the group.” He loved to take the blacktop county roads that are all across the country. We certainly saw some beautiful scenery, especially in Iowa, as he had spent many years as a sales/service person with agriculture companies. If anyone had a problem with their bike, Herb usually had the tools to get to the problem and fix it. Of course, he always had 5 or 6 “helpers” during the process. Some of us were making suggestions and/or learning a few things in the process. Herb was a very good mentor for a number of our new members, and I was one of them for all the years I knew him. Two quick personal stories: Our trips to the Missouri rally were sometimes rather “damp.” One year we road our trikes to Branson, and the weather turned stormy with threatening severe weather with high winds and hail. We found a sheltered place for our trikes, called a rental agency, and used the car for all of our rally traveling. The river at our complex did come out of the banks and flooded some of the lower condos but not the one we were staying in. At the end of the rally, we returned the car, suited up and headed home on the trikes. Another time Herb and I decided to outsmart the weather for the rally. We both trailered our trikes to Branson where we could unload them and ride as we wanted to. Out of 6 days in Branson, we were able to ride our trikes 1 day. Oh well, the best made plans! We have so many memories made and stories that we could share about our adventures with Herb and Rosy - many miles travelled togeth-er, like the Dragon’s Tail, the trip to the Atlantic Ocean and so many laughs shared as well as some very sad times. Herb, we will miss you! Until next time, Be Safe, Lanny & Carolyn, Chapter Directors

“Air Up”

Grab that gauge, tire gauge that is. An air pressure check in one of the most important safety items in a rider’s toolbox. Remember, your life is riding on a couple of relatively small rubber doughnuts. And nobody likes shriveled doughnuts. You should check the air pressure at least weekly or better yet before every ride. Some people ride almost daily and some only on occasion, but it is a fact that tires will lose air over time. Every motorcyclist should own and use a tire gauge. A digital one is easy to use and will give ex-act readings, but any gauge is better than none. Even an inexpensive one will help keep tabs on tire pressure. Just be sure to use the same one as gauges differ in pressure by a few pounds. The goal is to keep consistent pressure in the tires. Too much air gives a harsh ride and too little air leads to overheating and tire failure. There have been several social media posts lately about rear tire failure and some of that may be due to riders getting out after a storage period and not being aware of tire pressures. Out on a ride on a hot day with a co-rider and maybe pulling a trail-er will stress a properly inflated tire, just imagine what happens with one that is very underinflated. Recipe for disaster and a trip ruined. Another thing to look at is the valve stems. To be safe these should be changed at every tire change. Even on trikes with automotive type tires and rims, a rubber valve stem can leak over time. Purchased a used low mileage early model GL1800? Check the valve stems as the earlier ones were factory equipped with rubber stems that are very prone to failure at highway speeds when tire pressure is highest. Replace with the metal ones. Just because a tire looks good doesn’t mean that it is good. Use that gauge and be sure!
