Illinois is called the Prairie State for the gorgeous prairies seen all over Illinois. Illinois posses gorgeous topography, spectacular tourist attractions, remarkable state symbols, fascinating history, and amazing famous people.

Illinois is 318 miles long, 211 miles

wide. In all, it is 57,354 square

miles

temperature in the winter is 20-30˚ and

the average temperature in the summer

is 50-60˚.-

When Europeans first found the Illinois River it was so pure that they could drink from it. By the 1850’s it was so polluted that all the fish living in it had died. The State legislatives passed a pollution laws that helped clean up the river. Now, in present day Chicago there’s more than 30 different types of fish in the Illinois River.

Illinois has three geographic regions: the Central Plains, the Shawnee hills, and the Gulf coastal plain.

The Central Plains covers about 80% of Illinois. The soil there is dark and rich, making it ideal for farming.

The Shawnee Hills covers roughly 11% of Illinois. The Shawnee hills is comprised of hills and forests.

The Gulf Coastal Plains v=covers about 10% of Illinois. The weather patterns are rain, snow, and clear sky.

Lake Springfield is a manmade lake. It has a 57 mile shoreline. You can boat and fish and there’s a children zoo on the shore.

The old state capitol became the state capitol in 1839. When Lincoln became a state legislator he gave his house divided speech there.

When the first Europeans (French) came to Illinois they met a tribe called Illiniwek. The French pronounced this Illinois, so they named the state Illinois.

10,000 years ago the first people lived in Illinois. They were called the Paleo Indians.

1673, the first Europeans arrive.

1783 United States started governing themselves.

1818, Illinois became a state.

1871, The Chicago Fire burned down 20,00 buildings and left 100,000 homeless.
