SMART STREET LIGHTINGThe fundamental functionality of SYNAPSE is to act as a smart street lighting control system. It allows you to control and monitor every luminaire in your street lighting installation with ease either manually or using schedules, as individual devices or in zones. This alone can provide immense energy savings and reduce maintenance significantly. It can also greatly improve urban safety by ensuring light is provided where, when, and to the degree needed no matter what.

URBAN & ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORINGSYNAPSE, however, is so much more than a smart street lighting control system. By placing devices, such as sensors, on the existing lighting infrastructure or any other place in the city, you can create a tight mesh of urban and environmental data collectors that let you know what is happening anytime, any place. From measuring air quality and waste build-up to traffic monitoring and helping citizens find parking spaces, SYNAPSE enables you to take full advantage of the possibilities.

ANALYSIS & DECISION-MAKINGSo many sensors provide a lot of data. But to make data useful, you must turn it into actionable information. The advanced SYNASPE ANALYTICS software does just that. It not only records data and presents it as diagrams, tables, and reports for immediate use, it can tell you about what happened in the past and use that to put current data in context. Basically, it develops with your city, town, or village to ensure you have all the information you need to optimise city management.

Functionality

FULL SYSTEM AWARENESSSYNAPSE provides in-depth information about everything happening is the system including real-time feedback of any changes and detailed electrical parameters for each luminaire: Wh, WARh, V, W, A, WAR, PF, and frequency. The harvested data is transformed into actionable information through the SYNAPSE ANALYTICS software and presented as notifications, tables, diagrams, and reports.

REMOTE ON / OFF CONTROLAny street luminaire can be controlled by SYNAPSE using manual or scheduled individual or group control, and even adaptive control based on the use of ambient lighting, motion detection, and other sensors.

DIMMINGSYNAPSE supports DALI dimming of the street lighting. This means the lighting can adapt to real-time or expected needs according to the day or time of day. During times of low traffic and urban activity, lighting can be safety dimmed to a desired level, which greatly contributes to energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions as well as extending the lifetime of the light sources. Also, dimming the lighting reduces light pollution and other environmental effects.

SMART SCHEDULESLuminaires included in a SYNAPSE smart street lighting system operate autonomously based on astronomical clocks, photocells, or motion sensors. However, the lighting can always be adapted to meet the needs of special events as SYNAPSE supports time-limited schedule overriding and real-time operator commands.

REPORTING & MAINTENANCE SCHEDULESSYNAPSE ANALYTICS receives, prioritises, and compiles data from across the system into actional information. The software provides advanced analytical tools, and customisable maintenance and spare parts planning, all to improve the reliability, and functionality of the street lighting.

AUTOMATIC ADDRESSING OF DEVICESSYNAPSE is built around a system of devices (Nodes). They can be integrated directly within a luminaire, attached to it, or located anywhere else in the city as long as it is within communication range of a SYNAPSE Gateway. Each Node is identifiable based on GPS coordination and requires no manual setup before use. Engineers can easily locate a specific device on the move via the SYNAPSE software and GPS tracking.

TRAFFIC FLOWTraffic is an issue in every city, town, and village. Especially in more dense urban areas, the number of vehicles on the road can prove to be rather difficult to manage. SYNAPSE enables the incorporation of traffic sensors that detect real-time traffic volume, road occupancy, and average travel speed of vehicles by road or lane. The sensors can also categorise vehicles by size and speed. The collected data can help cities manage road capacity and urban access as well as enable citizens to plan journeys based on current traffic conditions.

PARKING MADE EASYFinding a parking space can be frustrating and results in a higher expenditure of fuel and, therefore, more pollution. SYNAPSE smart parking sensors are installed directly on the surface of parking spaces to detect the presence of vehicles using magnetic sensing. They provide real-time data about which parking spaces are full and which are empty. This data, used in conjunction with a smart parking app, allows drivers to locate empty spaces easily and quickly, saving time, reducing stress, and minimising pollution.

URBAN MANAGEMENTSYNAPSE also allows for the incorporation of sensors that measure things other than what is happening on the road. Core to the development of Smart Cities is the ability to easily and intelligently manage day-to-day activities like resource consumption and waste control. SYNAPSE provides a perfect platform for inclusion of smart utility metering such as the measuring of industrial, commercial, and domestic electricity, water, and gas usage. Sensors can also be used that measure when dumpsters are full to notify the waste removal services.

AIR QUALITYApproximately 80 % of our cities have higher levels of air pollution than acceptable and air pollution is now considered the single biggest environmental health risk. Air pollution consists of various things such as car and industrial fumes, and dust (particle matter). SYNAPSE can incorporate air quality sensors that measure carbon monoxide and dioxide, ozone, nitric oxides, sulphuric gases, ammonia, methane and other combustible gases, hydrogen and hydrocarbons, chlorine, and particle matter.

NOISE POLLUTIONUrban noise pollution is caused by traffic, industry, commercial activity, social events, construction, and households. It negatively affects health, personal and social wellbeing, and wildlife in various ways. SYNAPSE enables the incorporation of noise sensors anywhere along the lighting infrastructure, thanks to which the city can have more in-depth and easily accessible real-time data that highlights areas of concern, based upon which effective noise reduction strategies and public information initiatives can be put in place.

WEATHERThe weather has a profound effect on the day-to-day running of our lives and our urban environments. SYNAPSE helps you stay on top of the elements by knowing what is happening where, and aids in planning for what is coming. Select from sensors that measure ambient temperature, humidity, wind, and atmospheric pressure.

WATER QUALITYSYNAPSE allows for the connection of sensors that harvest information also about water quality across industrial and utility networks. The collected data can be integrated with geographical data about topography, public infrastructure, and population. Sensors can measure pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity (salinity), turbidity, temperature, as well as a comprehensive range of dissolved ions.

SOIL QUALITYWhy not add to your repetoire soil management, whether for urban gardens and parks, agricultural use, or regulation of private properties such as golf courses. SYNAPSE connects with sensors that harvest data about soil moisture levels and temperature, ambient temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and wind.

HAZARDS & EMERGENCIESSYNAPSE helps you prepare for the unexpected using a range of sensors to measure electromaganetic radiation, snow levels, water levels, gas leaks, and the structural integrity of buildings. SYNAPSE ANALYTICSThe SYNAPSE ANALYTICS software is built to manage street lighting systems comprised of a virtually unlimited number of luminaires. The graphical user interface (GUI) is intuitive and interactive and provides powerful management and reporting tools covering device status, real-time error reporting, and advanced maintenance scheduling. It is possible to group, adjust, and update actions through a "bulk operation" interface, which makes it incredibly easy to manage large numbers of luminaires, luminaire groups, schedules, and actions.

SYNAPSE ANALYTICS can connect with and control a wide variety of open protocol sensors and actuators from any manufacturer, making it an ideal platform for Smart City management.

MAP & DEVICE SELECTIONThe top level of the software can be shown as a satellite

map of the whole system or as a map/dashboard for

a selected luminaire, lighting panel, or node (shown

right) within which there can be an infinite number

of tabs. The dashboard can be customised by the

organisation and even by individual users in order to

provide the best and most effective user experience.

The information box on the right of the map allows

for the execution of commands and offers information

about the selected device.

The left side of the screen shows a menu divided into

three parts: groups, lighting panels, and notifications.

DEVICE PARAMETERSBased on custom configuration, the system can send

instant or automated information about device status,

last given command, and various electrical paramters:

W, V, current, PF, apparent energy, apparent power, on

time, and others.

DEVICE OVERVIEWWhen a particular luminaire is selected, a number

of tabs appear. The first is the Overview tab, which

displays information about the device and several

basic device readings.

In addition to the Overview tab are several other tabs

showing device notifications and providing access

to charts, reports, and configuration and scheduling

options.

DEVICE ENERGY CONSUMPTIONThe real-time energy parameters of each device can

be visualised as easy-to-understand charts. It is also

possible to select relevant data from the past and to

create reports covering a defined span of time.

DEVICE PROPERTIESWhen selecting the Properties tab for a selected

luminaire, you can see real-time information about the

properties and configuation of the device. Access to

the the configuration is password protected.

SCHEDULE EVENT LISTEach LoRa™ device may act according to an individually

configured schedule containing a series of time-

specific events. If the device belongs to a group, it will

act acording to group-defined schedule events.

Each schedule can be named. Selection of the named

schedules provides a history of scheduled commands.

NODESActing as the neurons of the city's central nervous system, Nodes are incorporated into individual light points to harvest data about the luminaires (real-time power consumption, temperature, device status) and the environment (air quality, ambient conditions, traffic and parking, utilities consumption, waste status, and more). The data harvested by the Nodes is used for local, precision control of the lighting ac-cording to real-time need.

SYNAPSE LIGHTING PANEL CONTROL & MONITORING MODULEThe SYNAPSE Lighting Panel Control & Monitoring Module serves as a Node on the electrical grid to monitor and control its basic parameters and functions. It is installed in distribution boxes and carries out autonomous measurement and analysis of various parameters including periodical load curve and energy consumption reports. Thanks to these measurements and their analysis, all device errors and malfunctions are reported to SYNAPSE ANALYTICS in real-time.

GATEWAYData harvested by the Nodes is sent to the SYNAPSE Gateway. Here the data is collated into packages and sent to the SYNAPSE Network Server and SYNAPSE ANALYTICS.

SYNAPSE NETWORK SERVERThe SYNAPSE Network Server manages every element of the network (Nodes and Gateways) for optimised, failsafe operation. It allows for integration with other applications and solutions while securing and protecting the network integrity.

SYNAPSE ANALYTICS SOFTWARELocated on the SYNAPSE Network Server, SYNAPSE ANALYTICS receives all data and transforms it into useful information. SMART CITY IoT PLATFORMAlmost 6.5 billion Internet of Things devices were already connected by the end of 2015, and 50 billion are estimated to be connected by the end of 2020. LoRaWAN™ uses license-free RF frequency ranges and is capable of connecting thousands of devices over long range, making the building of local, regional, and even global IoT networks easier and more cost-efficient than ever.
