A Message from Fr. Rolly… May 31, 2020 Pentecost Sunday And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” [John 20: 22-23]

This Sunday, we remember once again the official birthday of the Church founded by Jesus Christ. Today is Pentecost Sunday, that is, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit unto the Apostles. By tradition, this would have been the day or close to this day that celebrations of Confirmation for our youth are done. However, everything is now put on hold. All-important liturgical celebrations of the church that pertains to her sacramental life and faith formation is left hanging in a balance because of the pandemic. We have been hunkering down in our respective homes for quite some time now. Is there an end to this time of trial and testing? According to the Book of Ecclesiastes 3: 1: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…” The time then has come for the church to rise up from its seeming slumber. Finally, the church leadership and civil authorities have decided to open all places of worship provided that all health care guidelines and protocols are strictly followed to the letter. It is time to roll our sleeves and bend our knees to start the meticulous job of ensuring that our churches are ready to welcome worshippers warmly and pray in a safe environment. This is the reason why the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is not yet immediately opening the churches as soon as the authorities have given the go-signal to do so. The Archbishop firmly believes that the health and safety of the faithful people entrusted to his care are properly addressed. In order to put this concern as a top priority, all the pastors are required to submit a Master Plan, putting in details the procedures and protocols that needed to be in place and strictly implemented before even the doors of the church will be opened for public worship. This is on top of the already strict guidelines and protocols issued by the CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention). In view of this, I urge all our parishioners, visitors and the faithful people in general to be patient, kind and understanding. We also would like to open the church as soon as possible. However, it is our moral responsibility to ensure that a safe and healthy environment protect everyone who goes to church to worship and pray. This means that we still have to wait for a few days before we can open our church for public worship. We will do our best to expedite the process as required by our church leadership in order to open the church doors very soon. I pray that as we celebrate the official birthday of the Church, we may find time to reflect on the great love of God for us, so much so, that he has given us the Holy Spirit to abide with us forever. With the Lord’s presence among us, life can be joyful and merry even in this time of health crisis. May the Immaculate Heart of Mary protect and guide us as we prepare for the reopening of our parish church and continue our journey of faith with a renewed strength and enthusiasm to proclaim Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Father Tino’s Corner... Pentecost Sunday In our churches there is no lack of images, mainly statues, paintings or stained glass. They are mostly of Jesus, Mary and the saints, according to images of figures from the Old Testament such as Abraham and Sarah, or Moses and Miriam. The Holy Spirit, whose feast we celebrate on Pentecost, does not readily lend itself to images. The traditional image of the dove is drawn from the scene of Jesus' baptism. But the language in that passage is quite vague; the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, or in the way that a dove could descend. There are other images of the Spirit Holy in today's reading of the Acts of the Apostles. Lucas says that everyone who gathered in a room they heard what sounded like a mighty wind from heaven; He goes on to say that something appeared that looked like tongues of fire. Many things in our universe are real but invisible to the naked eye. What we see with our eyes is only a fraction of our physical world. The Holy Spirit belongs to the spiritual world, and naturally cannot see the Spirit with our eyes. However, there are useful ways to imagine the Holy Spirit. Saint Paul uses a picture drawn from nature when he says that the Spirit bears fruit. It refers to the visible effect of the Spirit in one's life. We may not be able to see the Holy Spirit, but we can see the effect of the Spirit in our lives, just as we cannot see the wind but we can see the effect of the wind on people and objects of various kinds. Paul says that wherever we find love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trust, gentleness, and self-control, the Spirit is there at work. The Spirit becomes visible in and through these qualities and virtues. The person who had these qualities more than anything was Jesus because he was filled with the Holy Spirit, filled with the life of God. In his letter to the Romans he has the wonderful statement: "The love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." It also indicates in today's second reading (1 Corinthians) that the Spirit is working in our lives, to make us more like Jesus. The good things that people do are all manifestations of the Spirit of God. The spiritual is not something from another world; it is humanity at its best. In the history of Pentecost, humanity appears at its best, united and sharing wisdom. Pentecost brought a wonderful union of people from all over the Roman Empire. They came together to admire and praise the wonders of God. Despite the language differences and culture, there was a true communion between them. Wherever there is communion of heart and mind between people of different origins, the Holy Spirit is working. Unity in diversity is the mark of the Spirit. Jesus points to another manifestation of the Spirit: the search for truth. Only the Spirit can guide us to the complete truth. If someone is really seeking the truth and is willing to participate in good works with others, there is the Spirit at work. The fullness of truth and love is always beyond us; but the Spirit is given to guide us towards truth and complete love.

THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT

Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are

familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from

time to time on tests. Today we

hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then

compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details:

the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of

different languages. John’s account

seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of

breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern

minds wonder which way it

happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the

former. But if we compare the two,

we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for

it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in

Luke, that appears to his disciples

in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of

forgiving sin and proclaiming the

SAINT CHARLES LWANGA

AND HIS COMPANIONS (martyred 1886-87)

Feast Day: June 3 `

“Master of Pages,” reputedly the handsomest man in all Uganda,

Charles Lwanga, lay catechist, courageously led about forty teenaged

boys, Catholics and Anglicans,

on a forty-mile forced march to martyrdom for their common Christian

faith. Teaching each other the hymns of their different churches, they

strengthened one another for the ordeal ahead. King Mwanga, himself barely

twenty, had ordered them executed for being “those who pray.” But these royal pages were the king’s male harem, who,

now Christians, refused what pious accounts demurely describe as his

“unreasonable demands.” Some were clubbed to death, most burned alive;

the youngest, thirteen-year old Saint Kizito, whom Charles had often

shielded from the King’s lust; the most

tragic, Saint Mbaga, whose father was his executioner! In 1964, Paul VI

canonized the young Catholics and praised their Anglican companions,

recalling the heroism of early Christianity’s African martyrs, which we modern Christians of far less faith

never expected to see repeated. Forty years after the pope’s words, what does

our faith cost us? Heroism aside, how generous is our response?

Mensaje de nuestro parroco, Fr. Rolly… 31 de mayo de 2020 Solemnidad de Pentecostés Después de decir esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: "Reciban al Espíritu Santo. A los que les perdonen los pecados, les quedarán perdonados; y a los que no se los perdonen, les quedarán sin perdonar". [Juan 20: 22-23] Este domingo, recordamos una vez más el cumpleaños oficial de la Iglesia fundada por Jesucristo. Hoy es el domingo de Pentecostés, es decir, el

derramamiento del Espíritu Santo a los apóstoles. Por tradición, este habría sido el día o cerca de este día en que se realizan las celebraciones de la Confirmación para nuestros jóvenes. Sin embargo, ahora todo está en espera. Las celebraciones litúrgicas más importantes de la iglesia que pertenecen a su vida sacramental y a su formación en la fe se quedan en equilibrio debido a la pandemia. Hemos estado refugiándonos en nuestras respectivas casas desde hace bastante tiempo. ¿Hay un final para este tiempo de prueba y desafío? Según el Libro de Eclesiastés 3: 1: "Hay un tiempo para todo, y una estación para cada actividad bajo los cielos ..." Entonces ha llegado el momento de que la iglesia se levante de su aparente sueño. Finalmente, el liderazgo de la iglesia y las autoridades civiles han decidido abrir todos los lugares de culto asegurando que se sigan estrictamente todas las pautas y protocolos de atención médica. Es hora de remangarse y doblar las rodillas para comenzar el trabajo meticuloso de garantizar que nuestras iglesias estén listas para recibir a los fieles con cariño y rezar en un ambiente seguro. Esta es la razón por la cual la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles aún no está abriendo las iglesias de inmediato tan pronto como las autoridades hayan dado la señal para hacerlo. Esto significa que todavía tenemos que esperar unos días antes de poder abrir nuestra iglesia para la adoración pública. Haremos todo lo posible para acelerar el proceso según lo requiera el liderazgo de nuestra iglesia para poder abrir las puertas de la iglesia muy pronto. Rezo para que al celebrar el cumpleaños oficial de la Iglesia, podamos encontrar tiempo para reflexionar sobre el gran amor de Dios por nosotros, tanto, que nos haya dado el Espíritu Santo para que permanezca con nosotros para siempre. Mensaje de Padre Tino... Domingo de Pentecostes

En nuestras iglesias no faltan imágenes, principalmente estatuas, pinturas o vidrieras. En su mayoría son de Jesús, María y los santos, de acuerdo con imágenes de figuras del Antiguo Testamento como Abraham y Sara, o Moisés y Miriam. El Espíritu Santo, cuya fiesta celebramos en Pentecostés, no se presta fácilmente a las imágenes. La imagen tradicional de la paloma se extrae de la escena del bautismo de Jesús. Pero el lenguaje en ese pasaje es bastante vago; el Espíritu Santo descendió como una paloma, o en la forma en que una paloma podría descender. Hay otras imágenes del Espíritu Santo en la lectura de hoy de los Hechos de los Apóstoles. Lucas dice que todos los que se reunieron en una habitación escucharon lo que sonó como un poderoso viento del cielo; continúa diciendo que les apareció algo que parecía lenguas de fuego. Muchas cosas en nuestro universo son reales aunque invisibles a simple vista. Lo que vemos con nuestros ojos es solo una fracción de nuestro mundo físico. El Espíritu Santo pertenece al mundo espiritual, y naturalmente no puede ver al Espíritu con nuestros ojos. Sin embargo, hay formas útiles de imaginar el Espíritu Santo. San Pablo usa una imagen dibujada de la naturaleza cuando dice que el Espíritu da fruto. Se refiere al efecto visible del Espíritu en la vida de uno. También indica en la segunda lectura de hoy (1 Corintios) que el Espíritu está trabajando en nuestras vidas, para hacernos más como Jesús. Las cosas buenas que hace la gente son todas manifestaciones del Espíritu de Dios. Lo espiritual no es algo de otro mundo; es la humanidad en su mejor momento. En la historia de Pentecostés, la humanidad aparece en su mejor momento, unida y compartiendo sabiduría. Pentecostés trajo una maravillosa unión de personas de todo el Imperio Romano. Se unieron para admirar y alabar las maravillas de Dios. A pesar de las diferencias de idioma y cultura, hubo una verdadera comunión entre ellos. Donde quiera que exista comunión de corazón y mente entre personas de diferentes orígenes, el Espíritu Santo está trabajando. La unidad en la diversidad es la marca del Espíritu. Jesús señala otra manifestación del Espíritu: la búsqueda de la verdad. Solo el Espíritu puede guiarnos a la verdad completa. Si alguien está realmente buscando la verdad y está dispuesto a participar en buenas obras con otros, allí está el Espíritu trabajando. La plenitud de la verdad y el amor siempre está más allá de nosotros; pero el Espíritu es dado para guiarnos hacia la verdad y el amor completo.

También son conocidos como los

mártires de Uganda, África Central, que había recibido a los “padres

blancos” (misioneros), pero que después, por órdenes del rey Mwanga fueron expulsados. Al darse cuenta de que

algunos de sus cortesanos “eran gente que rezaba”, los llamó a todos y les pidió

que se hicieran a un lado “los que rezan” es decir, quienes eran cristianos. Les

preguntó “si rezaban” y respondieron: “Sí, señor mío, hasta la muerte”,

la noche anterior habían pasado en

oración y Carlos Lwanga, catequista, estaba con ellos. Pero eso estaba

prohibido pues era un desafío a la religión del rey, por tal motivo

ordenó que los llevaran a Namugongo en donde algunos de ellos fueron

decapitados y otros atados y echados al fuego. Este grupo de mártires

estaba compuesto por niños y jóvenes.

El testimonio heroico de su sufrimiento dio un fuerte impulso al cristianismo,

de tal suerte que cuando los misioneros regresaron, ya había casi mil catecúmenos

esperándolos para ser bautizados. Fueron martirizados en 1886 y canonizados en

1964 por el Papa Pablo VI.

LA RIQUEZA DEL ESPÍRITU

Los estudiantes y la mayoría

de los adultos que recuerdan sus días de escuela, están familiarizados con la frase

“compara y contrasta” que de tanto en tanto aparece en las

pruebas. Hoy escuchamos dos relatos diferentes sobre

la venida del Espíritu.

Contrastemos y luego comparemos. El relato de

Lucas en Hechos está lleno

de detalles impresionantes: el viento poderoso, llamas de

fuego como lenguas, el milagro de las diferentes

lenguas. El relato de Juan

parece tímido: discípulos temerosos, el Cristo llagado,

el soplo de aliento viene de su cuerpo resucitado y no del cielo. Mientras nuestras

mentes modernas y literales se preguntan de qué manera

sucedió; nuestra ruidosa

cultura probablemente nos hará preferir el primer relato.

Pero si comparamos los dos, la deslumbrante riqueza del Espíritu llena ambos relatos,

ya que es el mismo aliento del Cristo resucitado,

ascendido a los cielos en Lucas, el que se aparece a sus discípulos en Juan y

envía a sus seguidores a llevar a cabo su misión de

perdonar los pecados y

proclamar los portentos de Dios.
