Children have spent many months at home now, separated from friends and classmates. Social media is a great tool to stay in touch, but there are definitely

dangerous aspects to much “screen time” that parents need to be aware

risky and dangerous — and sometimes even illegal. If your child has social media accounts, talk to them about making smart choices and about knowing the

difference between harmless pranks and seriously dangerous stunts. Make a pact to discuss anything

Dear friends, moving on within the season of Ordinary Time in our liturgy, Jesus starts his public ministry by preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. [Mk. 1: 16-18] It is interesting to note that as Jesus begins his public ministry, he preaches about repentance and believing in the gospel. Then, along the way he starts to look for people whom he believes can help him convey the message of repentance and reconciliation leading to hearing and believing in the good news of love and mercy. Jesus is very clear in his mandate about spreading the good news. He believes in the effort of collaboration and joining resources together to come up with a firm resolve for the good of the people. I think this is one of the reasons why Jesus appoints the first disciples for himself. By doing so he is sending a clear message that the reign of God is now being ushered in by him but with the cooperation and participation of people who are willing to embrace his message of reconciliation and peace. Evangelization then is not a work of a single individual who accepts Jesus’ call to spread the good news of love, mercy, and grace. The work of evangelization is a communitarian effort of sharing the good news to all people of good will, at home or abroad, in good times and in bad. All baptized Christians are called by Jesus himself to take part in this challenging work of spreading the good news, especially in this time when the world is in dire need of healing and peace. Brothers and sisters in Christ, you and I are called to the same challenge. We are called by Jesus, just as he called the first disciples from the shores of the Sea of Galilee, to work with him in spreading the good news of love, mercy, grace. We are all in this mission together as members of the church founded by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Do we accept this challenge? Are we ready to embark in this effort to show the world that we are disciples of Jesus? Let us pray to the blessed Virgin Mary, our mother, and our parish patron saint, that she may intercede for us to fulfill our mission of telling the world of the love and mercy of God in Jesus Christ. May God bless us and protect us always.

It is not easy to start something new, to change jobs, fields of study, cities or countries. Nor is it easy to try to solve a difficult problem. When we contemplate doing a new project, we think about what and how much our investment will be in the project. The knowledge we have and what we have to learn. The resources we have and the ones we have to invest. We think of our part; our commitment. And if we think like this, surely we will also conclude that it is not easy to follow the Lord. But following the Lord is not just about our strength, knowledge, and resources. Rather, it is about our trust in Him. In this weekend's readings, we heard only one segment of the stories of Jonah, Andrew, Simon, James, and John. The moment they responded to the Lord and followed Him. Let us pause for a moment how they got to that moment. If, for example, we know the story of Jonah, we know that he did not always feel confident about following the Lord. Jonah doubted his strength and ability to do what God asked of him. Jonah resisted the voice of the Lord. He fled because he thought that what the Lord was asking of him was impossible. However, when it is the Lord who calls us, it is his strength and his word that works through us. The brothers Andrew and Simon, James and John, also had to have their moment. His answer didn't come out of nowhere. They had already met Jesus and had shared with Him before. They had also heard and believed the message of John the Baptist. But the moment in which they left their networks and followed him, it was an act of trust, an act of faith. They did not leave their family devoid. They had trusted people, workers, including his father who took care of the fishing. The first thing God wants from each of us is that we know him. May we be sure of who God is. And there trust is born, there is faith born. And this helps us to remove the fear of answering you when you call us. More responding to God entails discernment. Is it really

God who asks this of me? Or are they my ideas, ambitions or self-imposed limitations? Discernment helps us measure our ideas, thoughts, emotions, and feelings and put them to the test. And once we have put ourselves to the test, we gain peace and trust.

Queridos amigos, avanzando dentro del tiempo del Tiempo Ordinario en nuestra liturgia, Jesús comienza su ministerio público predicando el evangelio del reino de Dios. "Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca; arrepiéntete y cree en el evangelio". Caminaba Jesús por la orilla del lago de Galilea, cuando vio a Simón y a su hermano Andrés, echando las redes en el lago, pues eran pescadores. Jesús les dijo: “Síganme y haré de ustedes pescadores de hombres". Luego abandonaron sus redes y lo siguieron. [Mk. 1: 16-18] Es interesante notar que cuando Jesús comienza su ministerio público, predica sobre el arrepentimiento y la fe en el evangelio. Luego, en el camino, comienza a buscar personas que él cree que pueden ayudarlo a transmitir el mensaje de arrepentimiento y reconciliación que lo lleve a escuchar y creer en las buenas nuevas de amor y misericordia. No es fácil empezar algo nuevo, cambiar de trabajo, de campo de estudio, de ciudad o país. Como tampoco es fácil tratar de solucionar un problema difícil. Cuando contemplamos hacer un nuevo proyecto, pensamos en cuál y cuánta será nuestra inversión en el proyecto. Los conocimientos que tenemos y los que tenemos que aprender. Los recursos que tenemos y los que tenemos que invertir. Pensamos en nuestra parte; nuestro compromiso. Y si pensamos así, de seguro que concluiremos también, que no es fácil seguir al Señor. Pero seguir al Señor no se trata solo de nuestras fuerzas, conocimientos y recursos. Se trata, más bien, de nuestra confianza en Él. En las lecturas de este fin de semana, escuchamos solo un segmento de las historias de Jonás, de Andrés, de Simón, de Santiago y de Juan. El momento en que le respondieron al Señor y lo siguieron. Detengámonos un instante en cómo llegaron a ese momento. Si, por ejemplo, conocemos la historia de Jonás, sabemos que no siempre se sintió confidente de seguir al Señor. Jonás dudo de sus fuerzas y su capacidad de hacer lo que Dios le pedía. Jonás se resistió a la voz del Señor. El huyó porque pensaba que lo que el Señor le pedía era imposible. Sin embargo, cuando es el Señor quien nos llama, es su fuerza y su palabra, la que actúa a través de nosotros. Los hermanos Andrés y Simón, Santiago y Juan, tuvieron que tener también su momento. Su respuesta no salió de la nada. Ya habían conocido a Jesús y ya habían compartido con Él antes. También habían escuchado y creído el mensaje de Juan el Bautista. Más el momento en el que dejaron sus redes y lo siguieron, fue un acto de confianza, un acto de fe. No dejaron a su familia desprovista. Tenían a personas de confianza, trabajadores, incluyendo a su padre que se encargaran de la pesca. Lo primero que Dios desea de cada uno de nosotros es que lo conozcamos. Que estemos seguros de quien Dios es. Y allí nace la confianza, allí nace la fe. Y esto nos ayuda a apartar el miedo a responderle cuando nos llame. Más responder a Dios conlleva discernimiento. ¿De veras es Dios quien me pide esto? O ¿Son ideas mías, ambiciones o limitaciones autoimpuestas? El discernimiento nos ayuda a medir nuestras ideas, pensamientos, emociones y sentimientos y ponerlos a prueba. Y una vez nos hayamos puesto a prueba, ganamos la paz y la confianza.

A NEW DAY DAWNS

Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn

the people, storms through the streets of

Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their wits.

And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing

“by their actions” how the people turn from evil

(Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns. Next we hear

Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its

present form is passing away”

(1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of

heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop

carrying out their everyday activities, he urges

them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though”

they aren’t doing the things they are doing.

A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on

the shore and cries, “The kingdom

of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and

Andrew abandon their nets—and even their

father— and follow him. A new day had dawned.

Everyone has to change when a new day dawns:

the Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles,

even Jesus! Didn’t a new day dawn today for us

The Penitential Rite

Standing together in the

presence of the Lord, we

acknowledge our weakness,

our sins and faults and failings.

But the penitential rite is

really less about our sins than it

is about God’s mercy. It is not a

time for individual confession,

like a mini-sacrament of

reconciliation. It is, rather, a

preparatory rite, preparing us to

praise the mercy of Christ as we

acknowledge our own weakness.

When Simon Peter witnesses the

miraculous catch of fish—when he

realizes who is in the boat with

him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with

the words, “Depart from me, Lord,

for I am a sinful man”

(Luke 5:8). We are like Peter.

The more aware of the

Lord’s presence we become,

the more awareness we also have

of our sinfulness, our

weakness. The penitential rite of

the Mass takes several forms,

from the traditional Confiteor

or “I confess” to a litany, spoken

or sung by the deacon or

cantor with responses by the

entire assembly. The penitential

rite always includes the words

Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—

Lord, have mercy; Christ, have

mercy. This ancient Greek prayer

came to the Roman liturgy from

the East, and still echoes in

many of the litanies of the

Eastern Rite Churches. These

words turn our gaze from our own

weakness to the gentleness, the

kindness, the forgiving love of

La Parte más Importante

Muchas personas crecieron con

la mentalidad de que la

consagración (la parte en la que

el sacerdote dice “Este es mi

cuerpo… Esta es mi sangre”)

es la parte más importante de la

misa. Esto se debe no sólo a un

profundo amor a la Eucaristía,

sino a un hábito que se desarrolló

en la Iglesia a partir del siglo XII

cuando se dio más atención a las

devociones eucarísticas que a la

Eucaristía misma; cuando la

gente comenzó a ver en la

consagración el momento

“milagroso” en el cual Dios

bajaba del cielo a la tierra. Esta

fascinación con el aspecto

‘mágico’ de la Eucaristía hizo

que se viera en el momento de

la consagración la parte

“más importante de la misa”.

De ahí se derivó el hecho de que

muchas personas procuraban

participar sólo en este momento.

No es así. La Eucaristía

es .importantísima toda ella

y todo momento. Hay un

momento cumbre; no obstante,

la plenitud de la Eucaristía es la

comunión con Dios y con el

prójimo. Recibimos a Dios para

recibir al hermano y hermana.

UN NUEVO AMANECER

Hoy escuchamos la manera en que Jonás,

enviado por Dios para advertir a la gente,

pasa como un torbellino por las calles de

Nínive, asustando a los ciudadanos hasta el

pánico. ¡Y funciona! Dios tiene un cambio de

corazón, al ver “sus obras” como la gente se

aparta del mal (Jonás 3:10). Un nuevo

amanecer.

Luego escuchamos a Pablo decir a los

corintios: “Este mundo que vemos es

pasajero” (1 Corintios 7:31). Pide un

cambio de corazón. Sin llegar a decir que no

hagan sus actividades diarias, les insta,

misteriosamente, a vivir “como si” no están

haciendo las cosas que están haciendo.

Es un nuevo amanecer.

Finalmente, Jesús se encuentra en la orilla

y clama: “El Reino de Dios ya está

cerca” (Marcos 1:14). Simón y Andrés

abandonan sus redes –e incluso a su

padre– y lo siguen. Es un nuevo amanecer.

Todo el mundo tiene que cambiar cuando

amanece un nuevo día: los ninivitas, los

corintios, los apóstoles, ¡hasta Jesús!

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CHURCH UPDATE

Following the current orders from Governor Newsom and the directives from the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles, effective immediately, churches are allowed to do

worships services when it is done outdoors. In view of this, we are going to set up our Sunday masses outdoors in our church parking lot.

For social distancing reasons, we do have the 6 feet requirement.

In order for you to attend, YOU WILL NEED TO CALL & RESERVE.

Please call the parish office at 323.660.0034. If the line is busy, please call again. Reservations will be taken the week BEFORE the Mass itself.

Confirmation number will be required for all attendees. Limited capacity.

Monday thru Thursday: 8:00am to 12:00 noon & 1:00pm to 2:45pm

Fridays: 8:00am to 12:00 noon First come, first served.

For people 65 and older, people that are
