Con le sue oltre 700mila presenze medie, il Meeting di Rimini - che dal 1980 haluogo ogni anno, in una settimana della seconda metà di agosto -

è il festival estivo di incontri, mostre, musica e spettacolo più frequentato del mondo.

A parte un piccolo nucleo di 14 persone che lavora a tempo pieno alla sua preparazione,il Meeting di Rimini viene organizzato, allestito, gestito e poi smontato grazieall’appassionato e generoso lavoro dei volontari: sono oltre 3000 ogni anno, in granparte giovani, provenienti dall’Italia e da molti altri Paesi del mondo. E’ soprattuttograzie al loro contributo che il Meeting di Rimini è diventato anche una manifestazionedai grandi numeri: 400 mostre, 3000 incontri, oltre 500 spettacoli, 5000 personaggi.Sono 850 i giornalisti accreditati durante l’ultima edizione.

Il Meeting è da sempre caratterizzato da una grande apertura e questo è testimoniatodai grandi personaggi che vi hanno partecipato, dai grandi temi che ha affrontato.In tanti si sono avvicendati sul palco del Meeting: dal Santo Padre Giovanni Paolo IIa Chaim Potok, dall’allora cardinale Ratzinger a Madre Teresa di Calcutta, dal DalaiLama a Eugène Ionesco, da Andrej Tarkovskij a Riccardo Muti, da Lech Walesa aIbraim Rugova, da Carlo Rubbia a George Smoot, da Ennio Morricone a Josè Carreras,da Jean Guitton a Luigi Giussani, da Simone Veil a Martha Graham, da David Rosena François Michelin; e ancora, politici, imprenditori, scienziati, filosofi, artisti.

Di seguito alcune immagini, volti e fatti di 30 anni di questa storia.

Si tratta di una realtà unica nel suo genere che da 29 anni si proponedi creare occasioni di incontro tra persone di fedi e culture diverse, nellacertezza che luoghi di amicizia fra gli uomini possano essere l’iniziodella costruzione della pace, della convivenza e del bene comune.

With an average attendance of over 700,000, the Rimini Meeting – held annuallysince 1980 and lasting one week in the second half of August – is the biggest andmost frequented world wide summer festival of encounters, exhibitions, music andentertainment.

Apart from a small core of 14 people who work full time on the preparation, theRimini Meeting is organized, prepared, managed and then dismantled by theimpassioned and generous efforts of volunteers, who number each year over 3,000.Most of them are young, they come from all over Italy and many other countriesaround the world. Above all it is thanks to their contribution that the Rimini Meetinghas become a major event, as the figures show: 400 exhibitions, 3,000 encounters,more than 500 shows, 5,000 guests and 850 journalists accredited to the lastedition.

The Meeting has always been characterized by a great open mindedness and this istestified by the amount of significant personalities that have participated and by thegreat themes that they have discussed.Many have come on and off the stage of the Meeting, they range from the Holy FatherJohn Paul II to Chaim Potok, the then Cardinal Ratzinger, Madre Teresa di Calcutta,the Dalai Lama, Eugène Ionesco, Andrej Tarkovskij, Riccardo Muti, Lech Walesa,Ibraim Rugova, Carlo Rubbia, George Smoot, Ennio Morricone, Josè Carreras, JeanGuitton, Luigi Giussani, Simone Veil, Martha Graham, David Rosen, François Michelin,and many other politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists, philosophers, and artists.

Following, some images, faces and facts in the 30 years of our history.

The event is unique of its kind that for 29 years has sought to createpoints of contact between people of different faiths and cultures, certainthat places of friendship between mankind can be the beginning of theconstruction of peace, coexistence and common welfare.

Ricordo la mia commozione nel Seminario di Milano, nel 1933, quandoun professore di italiano entrò in classe agitando il volume di una rivistascientifica tedesca in cui il noto esegeta Deissmann riferiva, sconvolto,una imprevedibile scoperta. Frammenti del Vangelo di Giovanni trovatia Ossirinco, in Egitto, per sé costringevano a una datazione più anticarispetto a quella comunemente accettata, cioè a una datazione che risalivaal tempo di Traiano. 1980E’ la prima edizione e sono già 50.000 le presenze che affollano i padiglioni,8 le mostre esposte, 70 i personaggi invitati a parlare e 300 i volontari.

Arrivano a Rimini, insieme ad Irina Alberti, i dissidenti russi Vladimir Bukovskje Tatiana Goritcheva. Partecipano un grande artista come William Congdon

e Giulio Andreotti, che ritornerà quasi sempre.

Is the year of the memorable visit of PopeJohn Paul II. 300,000 participants and16 exhibitions. The Meeting definitely

moves into the limelight of the newsreports. For the first time the renown

scholar, anthropologist Julien Ries, culturalheir of Mircea Elida, participates.

The first edition and 50,000 that crowd the stands, 8 exhibitions, 70 personalities invited to give a speech and 300volunteers. The Russian dissidents Vladimir Bukovskj and Tatiana Goritcheva arrive in Rimini with Irina Alberti.

A renown artist William Congdon and Giulio Andreotti also participate. Giulio Andreotti has almost always returned.

Il Meeting sale definitivamente allaribalta delle cronache. Interviene perla prima volta l’erede di Mircea Elida,

LE RISORSE DELL’UOMOTHE RESOURCES OF MAN

1983Continua a crescere il numero delle presenze, 400.000 nella quarta edizione.Si riconferma anche l’attenzione verso il fenomeno Meeting da parte di radio, tv

e giornali. Partecipa per la prima volta il regista Andrej Tarkovskij. Un grandeevento è la conferenza con il teologo Olivier Clément e don Luigi Giussani.

UOMINI SCIMMIE ROBOTMEN MONKEYS ROBOTS

Europe is slowly becoming an issue of the Meeting. The geneticist Jérôme Lejeune arrivesfrom France and the Archbishop of New York Joseph O’Connor arrives from the USA. Other

important personalities of the show business such as the Japanese dancer Kazuo Ohno, thesingers Bruno Lauzi and Enrico Ruggeri stage their shows.

The number of participants continues to increase, 400,000 in the 4th edition. The attention given to the Meeting continuesto grow. Radios, television and newspapers cover the Meeting. The film director Andrej Tarkovskij participates for the first

time. The conference given by the theologian Olivier Clément and Father Luigi Giussani is the outstanding event.

1985Al Meeting si comincia a parlare di Europa. Dalla Francia arriva il genetistaJérôme Lejeune, dagli USA l’arcivescovo di New York Joseph O'Connor.

È un’edizione ricca di mostre: 20. Partecipano tra glialtri il grande teologo von Balthasar e la danzatrice

Martha Graham che presenta al Meeting l’unicospettacolo italiano della sua tournée europea.

The world wide preview of Maximilien Kolbe is staged and premiered in the presence of thewriters Dominique Probst for the music, Eugène Ionesco for the libretto, and Krzysztof Zanussias director. The writer Jean Guitton, a great friend of Pope Paul VI, takes the floor. The Buddhistmonks of Mount Koya participate for the first time, only to come back to Rimini in many other

editions. The Companionship of Works is presented to the public.

The theme of this year’s Meeting is man and communication. Boutros Ghali,General Secretary of the United Nations, and Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris make their

presence. Miriam Makeba sings on the stage of the Meeting.

visit. Eugène Ionesco, a man of great culture,also makes his presence at the Meeting.

L’evento di maggior rilievo è sicuramente la visita diMadre Teresa di Calcutta. Interviene al Meeting un

grande della cultura come Eugène Ionesco.

1988Va in scena in anteprima mondiale, alla presenza degli autori, l’opera Maximilian Kolbe, musichedi Dominique Probst, libretto di Eugène Ionesco, regia di Krzysztof Zanussi. Prende la parola

un grande amico di Paolo VI, lo scrittore Jean Guitton. Partecipano per la prima volta i monacibuddisti del monte Koya che ritorneranno a Rimini in tante altre edizioni. Si presenta al grande

pubblico la Compagnia delle Opere.

The 2001 Meeting begins the day after the G8 summit in Genoa. The cycle of meetings promoted by the Companionshipof Works, “Above the G8. Works on trial” gives voice to the people who are working in the developing countries for years.

The debate centers on countries like Sierra Leone, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Uganda, the Balkans, Kenya and Peru.

A new venue for the Meeting after 23 years: muchbigger and more attractive. The Meeting moves fromthe Palacongressi to Rimini’s New Trade Fair District.The spaces are more than tripled, there are garden

areas, pools, ponds and more comfortable halls.The event touches a record 700,000 attendances,

2,400 volunteers during the seven days, 90,000 sq.meters of area covered, and 12 auditoriums.
