Instead, we gather together around our shared confession of Jesus Christ as our redeemer who forgives our sins and gives us peace. Its a beautiful thing. Its also important that we find times to grow together as a community of believers by engaging with each other in social activities beyond Sunday morning divine service and Bible studies. That s not to say the purpose of the church is to be a social club. For far too long people have treated church as another nice social club to be a part of. Instead, Im talking about the importance of our Christian community in a world thats increasingly pulling us away from our faith at every turn. Without roots and grounding in Gods Word and our Christian community, the devil will easily pull us apart. At one time the church was kind of the social hub for people in our country. That s no longer the case. In one respect thats good because people are going to church for the right reasons. Theyre going to hear about the redeemer of their souls and to praise His name rather than simply to see people and talk about the newest cultural drama they read in the paper. The other side of the coin, though, is that the church has - too often - become a Sunday morning thing where we have no actual relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ outside of Sunday morning or the Bible study class room. Instead, work, school, sports, and other clubs take up our time as we attempt to find our true community(and identity) in those things we enjoy doing. The problem is those things will never truly fulfill us and become our idols, especially when they act as a replacement for our Christian community. They may make us feel good for a while, but one day the burdens we place on ourselves to be the best in school, at work, on the team, or at the club (or even in the home...the best husband or wife or mom or dad or sibling...etc), will weigh too heavy and when we look for hope and comfort well only find more demands of our time and abilities. Sports end. Work ends. School ends. Our Christian community is eternal. Thats not to say that you may not have to move in the course of your life and be a part of another congregation, or that you cannot make lifelong friends at school, work, or in sports and other clubs. The point is that our Christian community is here to stay and is the ONLY community that will point us to truth in Christ. This is the place where we find peace with other broken sinners like us. No pretensions. No shaming for imperfection. Simply speaking the truth and pointing to Christ. Because of the importance of our Christian community, Immanuel is striving to get a better calendar put together so that we can announce events earlier, provide more opportunities to join together with the members of Immanuel, and to build our Christian community. The goal is NOT to be some exclusive club to rip people out of their other social contexts. Instead, we want you to invite people who need to hear about Jesus. Plus, there are many at Immanuel who dont have those deep friendships within the church community that provide support in times of need. They dont know people at other services and dont have the grounding of Christian peers that makes it more comfortable continued on page 2...

From Our Associate Pastor…

Community is a huge deal. We celebrate our communion (our joining together in community as Christians) when we gather in Jesus’ name to hear His Word and to receive His good gifts. Gifts like the Lord’s Supper. Literally, “Communion.” We come together not simply around a shared emphasis on being good people or something...nearly any group of people can potentially teach you how to be nice and liked by people. Instead, we gather together around our shared confession of Jesus Christ as our redeemer who forgives our sins and gives us peace. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s also important that we find times to grow together as a community of believers by engaging with each other in social activities beyond Sunday morning divine service and Bible studies. That’s not to say “the purpose of the church is to be a social club.” For far too long people have treated church as another nice social club to be a part of. Instead, I’m talking about the importance of our Christian community in a world that’s increasingly pulling us away from our faith at every turn. A “Note” from our Music Director

Preparations are underway for 2018-19! Even though we are into summer mode... fall music schedules are being made, music selections are being chosen, the organ has been tuned, and, other music endeavors are being taken care of in a somewhat "more relaxed" time of the year. Looking ahead: Immanubells will begin practices on Wed, Sep 5th at 6:00pm. Adult Choir will begin practices on Wed, Aug, 29th at 7:00pm. Agape Ringers will begin practices on Wed, Aug 29th at 8:05pm. The Sunday School Choirs continue during the summer months and will sing on Aug 26th at 10:15 for Rally Day. As music preparations are being made, I would ask you to pray for Immanuel's Music Ministry to continue and grow! If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry, please feel free to contact me via phone, email, or in person. To Him be the Glory and Honor!

to talk to someone when life is tough. There are many who are close outside of the walls of this church, but we want to provide the social opportunities to build us up as a congregation of Christ so that we have care and support for one another in the darkest of times. Imagine walking into church and really knowing people better because you’ve talked before or after service and had social opportunities to engage in conversation which takes your relationship outside of the walls of the church building. Immanuel is striving to create opportunities for social interactions as a congregation, but I encourage you to get to know the members of Immanuel. Go to a different service from time to time. Invite someone over for dinner or out to lunch. Pray for one another. Care for one another. Love one another. Be patient with one another. We come together around Christ and we continue to care and support one another every day. This is a holy (set apart) community. Let’s continue to strengthen those ties in the upcoming year. If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know. Blessings on your day!

The preschool staff would like to thank everyone involved for their support with the playground fence. This thank you goes to all those who helped with fundraising and for installation of the fence. All involved worked many long hours to complete the task. We now feel that our fenced in playground will allow our children more freedom to play and explore in a safe secure environment. We look forward to expanding the playground in the near future to include a paved area for bikes and sports activities to help improve our gross motor development. It was awesome for our VBS kids, too!

Funke News: Ups and Downs Romans 12:12-13. “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” This past month has been such a whirlwind of activity that it is hard to even know where to begin. We have celebrated and rejoiced—-in meaningful seminars at school, in supporting a family in need, in Amber and Austin’s return from their visit to the U.S., in hugs and homemade cards on Mother’s Day, in 7 years of marriage and a lovely picnic to mark the occasion, in the initiative of our CHE trainers, in visits from two U.S. mission teams. Sometimes we laughed until we cried, such as when we accidentally left the backdoor open and discovered a chicken in our bathroom. We have tried to embrace the chaos—when our Peace Corps friend Taylor was stung by a scorpion and Linda spent part of the night with her at the hospital, when siafu ants tried to invade our home, when we couldn’t return home from a Mwanza trip because our house was surrounded by an angry swarm of bees. We have grieved—a missionary friend lost at sea, the sudden death of a friend’s groom less than a month before the wedding, friends being hurt by rumors, setbacks in our adoption case. Yet, God remains the constant, and even in the struggles, we are thankful for the hope and balance God provides. US Citizenship Our journey towards U.S. citizenship for Michael and Julia continues. As we mentioned last month, we have hired Wasatch International Adoption Agency to help us get U.S. citizenship for our children, and this past month we have been working steadily on gathering documents, completing essay questions, and finishing the homework for the agency’s “Parenting Education Manual.” A U.S. social worker will come to our home July 5-7 to conduct an official home study. However, we need financial help to get through this process. The citizenship process will cost about $18,000 over the course of the next two years. We need $8,500 by July to cover the application fee, program fee, home study fee, travel expenses for the social worker, translation costs for Swahili documents, and flights to Dar Es Salaam to access a U.S. notary. So far we have received $2,400! Thank you so much to all who have contributed! If you are willing to help our children become American citizens, you can make a secure online donation at https://globallutheranoutreach.com/support-funkekidsproject.html. Please make sure to write your donation next to “Funke Kids Citizenship Project” so it goes to the right place. Or you can write a check to “Global Lutheran Outreach” and put “Funke Kids Citizenship Project” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to Global Lutheran Outreach; 6709 Ficus Drive, Miramar, FL 33023. We greatly appreciate your prayers and support on this intense journey. Our School On May 5, Linda led her annual 6.5 hour seminar on sex and relationships with the help of five other staff members. This seminar covers the basics of sex, abuse, the physical, emotional, and spiritual ramifications of sex, and how to develop healthy relationships and make decisions for their futures. At the end, the boys and girls were separated so that they could ask questions. Once again, the seminar brought up some tough topics and Linda provided some follow-up counseling sessions for some individual students. On May 12, Linda helped our Peace Corps friend Taylor German implement the Huru program for the girls at our school, which not only provides reusable menstrual pads, but also covers topics such as puberty, menstruation, how to avoid risky behaviors, assertiveness training, goal-setting and self-awareness/self-worth. Linda also led a “Lessons in the Movies” class which pulled life lessons from some of their favorite movies. Meanwhile, Eric’s time at school was spent teaching, typing exams, registering all students and teachers into the e-learning system, and compiling student grades before the June break. All but the Form 4 students have returned home for the break and will return July 1st.

This is part of their June 2018 newsletter written by Eric & Linda Funke on June 7, 2018. Would you like to be added to their email list? If so, email Eric & Linda at [email protected] and let them know.

Only missing 2 Sundays were Collin Dethrow, Ayda, Henry & Myla Eggemeyer, Jenna Hoeffken, Ben Janssen, TJ Joellenbeck, and Lauren Patterson. Only missing 3 Sundays were Ashlyn & Autumn Whelan. Congratulations to each of you! Remember, Sunday School classes are offered throughout the year (even in the summer months) each Sunday at 9:00 am. So, come when you can! Our teachers always look forward to seeing you!

Rally Day Although we have Sunday School classes year-round and you can attend any time, our “official” year begins with “Rally Day” which will be Sunday, August 26. During the 10:15 am service on this Sunday, the Preschool—8th grade students will sing 2 songs to celebrate. We’ll be practicing those songs during our Sunday School classes. Be on the lookout for a special letter from your teacher coming in early August telling you more about this special day.

Thank you to all who provided music at our Outdoor Service in June! Brittany Buettner and Karen Hodapp, flutes; Jenna Hoeffken, trumpet; Adrianna Whelan, trombone; Joyce Rossel, French horn; Pastor Demski & Elden Niemeyer, saxophones; and Lisa Clamors & Taryn Niemeyer, percussion. Also, a big thank

you to Greg Hoeffken for setting up the sound system and making sure it all ran smoothly.

Our 2018 Summer Sermon Series is based on the “I am” statements of Jesus in the gospel of John. The sermons during this 8-week series will concentrate on Jesus’ person, mission, and ministry. Special t-shirts with our church info and the series logo may be purchased for $3.00 or may be won by turning in 6 fill-in-the-blank sermon outlines.
