Many people are upset for any number of reasons. I would list the various reasons, but we dont have that kind of space or time in the context of this newsletter. And, honestly, every reason we have to be upset isnt the point. Too often we spend more time than we ought to spend talking about all of the bad and bemoaning our circumstances rather than doing what were called to do as Christians. As Christians, we proclaim Christ and give thanks to God daily in all circumstances (1 Thess 5:18)...even when times are rough and even when people arent doing things the way we think they ought to be done. We certainly acknowledge sad times, we mourn with those who mourn, and cry out to God in all honesty when our hearts are breaking, but not to the exclusion of giving thanks to God. The Psalter isnt shy about praising God and encouraging you and me to give thanks to God as well. Just take a look at Psalm 107, 118, and 136 to name a few. Even the lament psalms conclude by praising Gods goodness. This has certainly been a year to remember and yet there are reasons, even now, to give thanks to God for His goodness and mercy. Even now we praise God after praying in our times of need. Did you wake up today? Awesome! Did you eat today? Great! Did you see a ceiling over your head when you woke up? Perfect! But I dont have _______.” Okay. Then give thanks to God for what you do have and pray in your need. God has given us many gifts and yet were tempted to replace contentment and giving thanks with consternation and complaints. At church this year the holiday season will feel strange compared to times past. We look forward to Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day (as well as Easter, but were not talking about Easter in November) as those times of the year when there are a few hundred voices joined in worship and praise rather than 50-100 on a given weekend. We look forward to the fellowship and the extra music, and various traditions. Many of those things wont be the same this year in light of whats going on in our world. Well have smaller numbers at our holiday services, at least an extra Christmas Eve service, no childrens service, and less of our normally added musical beauty. Its just not going to be the same.Youre right. It wont be. You have not called me here to give sugarcoated words of encouragement. Youve called me and Pastor Troup to speak the truth. The truth is, there is sickness. The truth is, there are people who are scared. The truth is that Gods gifts continue to be here for us. Christs body and blood still forgive every one of your sins. Your harsh words to that person online. Your angry thoughts while listening to the news. Your fearful attitude while dealing with this time of the pandemic. All of it is still forgiven through Christ who calls you out of fear and into peace. Christ continues to call you to turn from anger, fear, and selfishness to faith in Him where there is life. Our hope is not rooted in our traditions. continued on page 10…

From Our Administrative Pastor…

Greetings in Christ,

Let’s be honest...people are depressed. Or at least out of sorts. Many people are upset for any number of reasons. I would list the various reasons, but we don’t have that kind of space or time in the context of this newsletter. And, honestly, every reason we have to be upset isn’t the point. Too often we spend more time than we ought to spend talking about all of the bad and bemoaning our circumstances rather than doing what we’re called to do as Christians.

As Christians, we proclaim Christ and give thanks to God daily in all circumstances (1 Thess 5:18)...even when times are rough and even when people aren’t doing things the way we think they ought to be done. We certainly acknowledge sad times, we mourn with those who mourn, and cry out to God in all honesty when our hearts are breaking, but not to the exclusion of giving thanks to God. The Psalter isn’t shy about praising God and encouraging you and me to give thanks to God as well. Just take a look at Psalm 107, 118, and 136 to name a few. Even the lament psalms conclude by praising God’s goodness. This has certainly been a year to remember and yet there are reasons, even now, to give thanks to God for His goodness and mercy. Even now we praise God after praying in our times of need.

Did you wake up today? Awesome! Did you eat today? Great! Did you see a ceiling over your head when you woke up? Perfect! “But I don’t have _______.” Okay. Then give thanks to God for what you do have and pray in your need. God has given us many gifts and yet we’re

tempted to replace contentment and giving thanks with consternation and complaints.

At church this year the holiday season will feel strange compared to times past. We look forward to Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day (as well as Easter, but we’re not talking about Easter in November) as those times of the year when there are a few hundred voices joined in worship and praise rather than 50-100 on a given weekend. We look forward to the fellowship and the extra music, and various traditions. Many of those things won’t be the same this year in light of what’s going on in our world. We’ll have smaller numbers at our holiday services, at least an extra Christmas Eve service, no children’s service, and less of our normally added musical beauty.

“It’s just not going to be the same.” You’re right. It won’t be. You have not called me here to give sugarcoated words of encouragement. You’ve called me and Pastor Troup to speak the truth. The truth is, there is sickness. The truth is, there are people who are scared. The truth is that God’s gifts continue to be here for us. Christ’s body and blood still forgive every one of your sins.

(Jesus said,) “When you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Matthew 6:7-8

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel,

Believe it or not, I’ve already started my Christmas shopping. Because I have to give gift giving a lot of thought, I generally start my shopping early. Of course, like many husbands, I have a hard time finding gifts for my wife. Sometimes I buy gifts that I think she’ll like, but usually I need her to tell me what she wants or needs. She likes (kind of) the things I buy her on my own, but she likes it more when I get her the things she tells me to get. Telling me what she needs seems to work the best.

How different that is from the way God deals with us. According to Matthew 6:7-8, the Bible verse at the top of this page, God knows what we need before we tell him! Jesus seems to be saying in this Bible verse, “Listen, children of God. You don’t have to go on and on about what you need when you pray to your Father. You don’t have to say, ‘Please, please, please,’ or give him a hundred reasons for why you need what you’ve requested. God knows what you need. God knows what you need even before you ask him.”

How true that is! God knows us inside and out. He knows our likes and dislikes. He knows what we need and what we don’t need. What’s more, he’s on our side. He’s ready and willing to give us what we need. In the words of Paul in Phil. 4:19, “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Does that mean God gives us everything we want? No. Sometimes the things we want aren’t good for us. And sometimes the things we want aren’t things that fit in with the roles God has given us. I mean, I’d like to be fabulously wealthy, but how would that fit in with my role of being a pastor? They just don’t seem to go together. Rather than give us what we want, God gives us what we truly need. That’s why the Holy Spirit granted us the gift of enlightenment. So we would recognize our sinfulness. That’s why he granted us the gift of repentance. So we would turn from our sin and look to him for forgiveness. That’s why he granted us the gift of faith. So that we would depend on our Savior Jesus for forgiveness and eternal life with God. Because of Jesus’ saving work, God grants us all the blessings of heaven! He gives us everything we need.

With this in mind, our prayers are joyful, stress relieving and full of thanksgiving to God. We still pray for what we need. It’s helpful to go to the Lord with our needs. It helps us remember that God’s in charge. God’s the source of all our blessings. But we’re not stressed out when we go to God with our needs. We don’t have to beg like a dog for a bone or bombard the Lord with thousands of words. God knows us. He knows what we really need. He gives us what we really need. Or, as Paul put it in Rom. 8:32, “Will not God, who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, graciously give us all things?” To God be the glory! God bless you richly!

Love in Christ,

From Our Associate Pastor…

A Note from Our Music Director… Christmas Caroling in December... In the past, Immanuel members and friends have gone Christmas caroling to area nursing homes in two large groups. This year, caroling will look a bit different due to the Covid virus. Singing in small groups to various members (not in nursing homes) will take place on Sunday, December 13th. Those interested in caroling will need to sign up by November 27th so that people/places can be assigned. Carolers do not have to meet at church as in the past; individuals/small groups can determine when on the Sunday afternoon they wish to head out for caroling. Once assignments have been made, carolers will be provided with names/addresses and song sheets...and, carolers are free to bring their own bells to ring! Please consider this opportunity to share the "JOY" of Christmas with others. Serving Him, Please fill

out & return the form on

page 9 or in your weekly

bulletins.

groups” have been on hold since March and “baby steps” are being considered as “extra music” is added into worship services. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns about Immanuel's Music Ministry and continue to pray for those involved in music leadership. To HIM be honor and praise! Service Reminders:

Just a few important notes about our services. As

you are all aware, things change constantly, so please

continue to watch your weekly announcements &

emails.

1. There is currently no need to call ahead to attend

a service. Please note that the 5:30 & 7:45 services

tend to be less attended if you are wondering about

which service to attend.

2. Please wear masks upon entering and exiting.

We’ll have masks available, too. You can remove

them once you are seated and distanced. Please

continue to respect people’s space who wish to be

distanced.

3. Communion is celebrated at every service.

Individual cups & the common cup are offered at

each service as well.

4. While a few ushers will be present, the bulletins

& offering plate will continue to be on the table in

the narthex. Please pick up a bulletin as you

enter the sanctuary and place your offering and

attendance card in the plate either before or after

service.

5. For now, during our Sunday services, the ushers

will be in the narthex to greet you from a distance

and help where needed. They will also help to

direct families to the communion rail.

6. Jesus remains our focus—nothing has changed!

Praise be to God for sustaining His people now

and forever!

THANK YOU!

We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for all you did for Roger. He received so many cards, well wishes, and words of encouragement over his 18-month courageous battle fighting cancer. As most of you know, it was very extensive at the time he was diagnosed in March 2019. We appreciate the memorials that were given in his honor, and many of these were designated for our church. Roger was a member of Immanuel his entire life and really loved his church family. And, these memorials have been set aside in a special fund for a needed project, which is being put in motion. Thank you to Pastor Demski and Pastor Troup for always visiting Roger and being so supportive of our family. Roger fought a long and hard battle to try to beat the cancer, and we had many days we thought he could. He never gave up and told us two days before his death that we couldn’t give up on him. He was still fighting, but his body could no longer fight. We are so thankful for having 18 more months with him after the initial hopeless diagnosis. His strong faith and trust in God carried him through! We are thankful he was granted peace by God and is no longer suffering, but we miss him so much. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers as we try to heal from our loss. May God bless you all! We would like to thank everyone for your prayers, thoughts and well wishes during

Pastor Demski’s Letter… continued from page 1... Our hope is not founded on our favorite way of doing things. Our hope is established in Christ alone who has called you from death to life and for that we give thanks.

As we enter November, give thanks to God. Regardless of the outcome of elections. Regardless of family squabbles. Regardless of how the culture around you is dealing with COVID. Regardless of the violence in the world around us. Give thanks to God, for His steadfast love endures forever and that steadfast love came in the flesh to save your flesh...but I’m getting ahead of myself now. I’ll focus more on that in December.

Life is yours, freely given in Christ.

Go in peace. Nothing has changed!
