CRIME RATES IN SG

Information Design

Page 2: Immsan pd1 ia

Rational on this problem

• I would like to create an awareness for people about the concerns of the crime in Singapore. • This is to ensure the safety for the people who are living, or in,

Singapore.• It is also to let them know that the number of those crimes are increasing / decreasing without them knowing about it

• If the crime rates are increasing, people should do something about it; lifting up a helping hand by looking out for suspicious people and also to be sure of their own/ loved ones safety.

• If crime rates are decreasing, people should get to be more alert around with the surroundings; so as to prevent the rates to increase and continue to have the rates to be decreased.

Page 3: Immsan pd1 ia

Types of crime rates that I want to check about?

• To compare from a certain year to 2011.• Why? Since this is the starting of 2012, I would like to know the

concerns in 2011 so that history wouldn’t be repeated.• Do I want to check out on the overall crimes?• Target audience: young? Old?• Robbery? Domestic violence? Murder? Homophobic? Domestic (Noise

pollution made by man, dispute between people)? Gun crime? Knife & crime? Mugging and assault? Racial hate assault? Rape and sexual assault? Religious hate crime? rioting?

• If I were to pick out the common ones, what about those unknown crimes?• People should know them right (common ones) ?- what about those unknown

crimes?

Page 4: Immsan pd1 ia

Chosen idea.• Noise pollution• People are not aware that the rates of this crime is increasing. --- they are not

aware that they are making too much noises as well• If citizens were to know that this number is increasing, they would be aware of

the noises that they are making --- they should have reduce the noise being made by them, in order to decrease the number.

• How do I know about these information? I went up to ask my elder brother, who works in police force, and he had mentioned about this case. I asked if there is any cases that is made unknown to people but the number is increasing. So he told me about it and I thought it should be a good start.

Page 5: Immsan pd1 ia

Why do I choose an unknown crime? (Rational)

• Unknown crime means that there is a type of crime going on, but people are unaware of such cases that is happening.

• This shows that no one / not all knows about it, this crime would be increasing because it is not aware by others (citizens).

• Nobody is helping the number to decrease• They are the ones who creates it, but there were no news about people complaining

--- no news or papers broadcasting. Only internet.• Even when crimes are not broadcast in news, but when a crime is increasing this is

not a good sign

- I did not choose the common ones is because I would want to focus more on one crime (unknown) so that people wouldn’t be confused with the graphics.

- Common ones are being taken at hand- People and citizens are doing something about it to decrease the rates

Page 6: Immsan pd1 ia

What can I do to back up my report?• Online survey• Research• Face to face interview

Page 7: Immsan pd1 ia

Research • What is noise pollution? (based on the type of problem

that I’m tackling on)

- A type of energy pollution in which distracting, irritating are freely audible

- Human activity that are capable of damaging physical structures on a regular or repeating basis

Statistics of Noise Pollution in SG• I was unable to find the statistics and data about the rates

of noise pollution of Singapore.• Therefore, I have decided to change the idea that’s shown

in the next slide.

Page 9: Immsan pd1 ia

Change of chosen idea• I couldn’t find the noise pollution crime rates for

Singapore. No matter what kind of keywords that I have typed on google search bar, it still doesn’t shows the data that I need. However during my research for noise pollution in Singapore, I’ve found out the number of statistics showing the other types of key concern for 2011; phone scams.

• In the starting of 2012, we still are able to use 2011 statistics as a guideline for us, so that we could take precaution to stop the number of rates to increase.

• Singaporeans must be aware of this to reduce the crime rates of it.

Changed of focus

New idea: Phone Scams

Previous idea : Noise Pollution

This is an information graphic of the overall crimes that is found in SPF website.-It looks very informative but it looks too boring and wordy. -The table format would allow information to be placed accordingly. But it looks very ‘rigid’ which causes the information to be unnoticed of. Because people might not be ‘bother’ in reading the whole chunk of information that is given to them.

- This would be too overwhelming for the readers.

Page 12: Immsan pd1 ia

My Rational • Even though there were infographics shown on SPF website, they did not state the current key concerns about it; it only shows the other decreasing rates of crimes.

• Besides, the information that they have been placing in the web, I do find that it might be too overwhelming as there are lots of information to be shown for readers.

• Since they wanted the citizens to be aware of the key concerns, that is why I have decided to design something that would create awareness to the people.

• They would be able to give a helping hand by informing their parents, especially elderlies as they would be easily taken in by con mans, and to be aware of such cases might affect their family members as well.

Page 13: Immsan pd1 ia

Target readers (audience)

• Adults

Rational I would want to alert this group of people , so that they’ll take note of these cases that’s evolving , and to prevent their elderlies at home from being scam.

It is true that elderlies must be alerted as well, but the adults will be the ones who will be staying or connecting with the elderlies more often, and would have better ways of communicating to them about such cases.

Besides, elderlies might have the tendency to forget about such cases that’s happening and those adults who stays or connect with them should keep highlighting to them about it. Hence, the adults have the responsibilities to inform the elderlies about it as well.

Information about the crimesKidnap Phone Scam•Culprits call up would tend to claim that their love ones (hostage) is being kidnap by them.•They would then request for ransomed money; in order to save their love ones.•But their love ones who was said to be ‘kidnapped’ was actually safe and sound at work or overseas.•The main aims that usually be the victims of this scam case would be the elderlies at home.

- they’ll tend to get cheated easily as they are more vulnerable and ‘naïve’ at old age.

Page 16: Immsan pd1 ia

Information about the crimes Lottery Phone Scams•Fraudsters would make unsolicited calls or SMS to handphone, claiming that they have won prize money in an overseas lottery. •Or else they will send the same notifications, but through recipients via postal mail, facsimile or the Internet•recipients would then be directed to liaise with the lottery’s agent or representative. •Sometimes, recipients would be asked to provide their personal particulars and bank account numbers to facilitate the transfer of the prize money.•Such lottery winnings does not exist.•it is being designed to convince and dupe victims to part with their money.

Reasons in researching about infographics• I do not really have much experience in designing infographics,

hence I do need to fully understand what is designing an infographic is really all about.

• This would help me to start the problem that I will be doing about as well.

• Since I am learning to design an infograhic as well, I would also be searching for the requirements needed to design one.

• This would allow me to get into more details during my process of designing and having more ideas when designing my infographic.

• By having the research that I am carrying out, would also help in extending my knowledge about it

• At the same time, I am able to learn more tips and pointers about designing infograhics.

Page 18: Immsan pd1 ia

What is infographics?

• A visual representation of information, data or knowledge

• Graphic: used when a complex piece of information needs to be described precisely, clearly and will not confuse people when they read it

• Information visualization focuses on representing a particular sequence of data or specific information from statiscal data

This would give me a start/ idea on what infographic design is.

Page 19: Immsan pd1 ia

Points to remember while creating

• Use universal or global format• Show/ reveals information ; previous hidden, taboo, unclear ,

buried information• Visual view: try to integrate words with images dynamically• Since it’s a standalone; it must have clear information, so that

there’s no question raised when people see it

http://www.onextrapixel.com/2010/05/21/huge-infographics-design-resources-overview-principles-tips-and-examples/

These pointers would highlight to me in the usage of logo designs or during my process of creating my design.

Page 20: Immsan pd1 ia

How to design an effective infographic?

• Have creativity while processing and managing infograhics is very important

• An infographic as an information model which captures readers by visual projection, must look attractive, friendly and also comprehensible for readers

http://www.onextrapixel.com/2010/05/21/huge-infographics-design-resources-overview-principles-tips-and-examples

Highlighted points which would give me an idea on how my design should look like.

Page 21: Immsan pd1 ia

Steps needed to make…Information organizing

•First thing that flows information•Collect all data for activity, relating to facts and accuracy of data in the field•Make sure to organize and arrange datas to a contextual design•Design at this point is just a representation tool, not the target aim of infographics•Design is just a graphic that makes easier for readers to understand the elements•The more information, the better•Content must be well organized to help and guide the readers

http://www.onextrapixel.com/2010/05/21/huge-infographics-design-resources-overview-principles-tips-and-examples

Page 22: Immsan pd1 ia

Make it simple and sweet•Visual complexity and organizing information represented by infographics is very important•Simplification of matter and knowing who exactly our target audience is all important

- easier for readers to comprehend and interpret infographic itself with a simple and direct representation•Color usage and visual appearance are also important•Just make it simple, clear and clean

Showing cause and effect•So that people will be more aware•Making them to response with an action or attitude

http://www.onextrapixel.com/2010/05/21/huge-infographics-design-resources-overview-principles-tips-and-examples

Page 23: Immsan pd1 ia

Make boundaries or scope of theme•After sufficient amount of reliable information, design a visualization from my imagination

- based on the information that I have now•Remember: aim to answer 1 question and communicate in brief

-adding too much information will push aside my message and readers will turn their attention to other important things

Use of a color scheme•Color is the best elements and most effective way for authors to guide their readers•Color can give readers varied impressions. (an important role of using color for infographic•Erase color if its inappropriate to adapt the theme•Dark color scheme: allowing readers to focus and pay more attention to object•Always use tone and adjust infographic’s color contrast evenly

http://www.onextrapixel.com/2010/05/21/huge-infographics-design-resources-overview-principles-tips-and-examples

Page 24: Immsan pd1 ia

Combine with Typography, Illustration, Chart or Icon•Combine all these to make it more attractive•Adapt the trend that’s popular at the time I created

- handwriting/serif/roman typography- striking colors to attract readers?

Just answer 1 question•Most important part in creating or designing on infographic•Decide carefully what the question is; how I want to, or the best way to answer the question

- more time spent, visualization will be more effective and imaginative•Stick to 1 question to be answered

- easier to describe what I want to communicate to the public•Pretend as if it’s a story telling

- how I visualize it as a design of an infographic

Page 25: Immsan pd1 ia

My ideation process

Page 26: Immsan pd1 ia

Rational for my type of design• Since my problem is based on a crime rate of phone, I thought of

using phones (template) to design my infographic

• This would relate to my problem that I am tackling on.

• Though I might be using phone template for my design, will people understand/ know or even remember about this awareness?

• I was trying to play around with psychology, and thinking of people have been relying their phones to remember important issues.

• Hence, I’ll be doing up a survey to check out for more information about people having the tendency to remember important issues through phones or not.

Page 27: Immsan pd1 ia

Survey question and rational of it

 1. Do you rely on your mobile phone to remind you of something important? [Any of your mobile phone's applications: Quick Notes, Calendar (schedule), Evernote, etc.]

-Yes-No

Rational: I would like to know if people do use phones to remind them of something important.

Page 28: Immsan pd1 ia

Survey question and rational of it2.  If you have the choice to choose the following devices / items as your platform for an important reminder, which would you choose?-Mobile phones-Schedule book/ planner-Others

Rational : this question would be able to show the people’s preference on having a phone or schedule book (which it refers to poster design concept “paper form”, to remind them of something. Why do I add ‘Others’? This is to also show if people do have other types of devices to remind them of something. It will help me in my ideation process as well.

Page 29: Immsan pd1 ia

Survey question and rational of it

3.  Why would you choose that particular device / item? Please refer back to question 2.

Rational: I would like to check and see if my own previous rational on people using phones to remind them of important issues, are right or not. This is to back up my previous rational under “rational for my type of design” is right or not.

Page 30: Immsan pd1 ia

Survey results

21 responses in total. All of them are students and working adults.Posted my survey links on Facebook and twitter, to get people to do my survey questions.

- this is the easiest and fastest way to collect responses from people.

Page 31: Immsan pd1 ia

• Out of 21 responses, 17 people responded that they do use phones to remind them the important issues.

• Although there were 4 negative responses, there’s still a majority of them had positive answers.

• So based on this 1st question, a quarter of my rational on people using phones to remind them on important issues, is correct. I still have to look into the other 2 questions before analyzing my whole result.

Page 32: Immsan pd1 ia

• Based on these responses, there were some slight changes to the answers as compared to question 1.

• This time round, there were a little more people choosing schedule book to act as a reminder.

• Even as I added in the ‘Others’ column, both responses would still prefer devices (phones) to act as reminder.

• Though the 2nd response stated both are still alright, but this could still show that phone is still a majority choice for them.

Page 33: Immsan pd1 ia
Page 34: Immsan pd1 ia
Page 35: Immsan pd1 ia

• From all the responses that they have given for question 3, most of their answers for having a mobile devices is because it acts as an ‘alarm’ for them, and it is always lying beside them. It is convenient for them as well.

• So in psychology speaking, those who responded using mobile phones, it means that using mobile phones or having them would reminds them of something important to remember.

• Which also means if I were to use the template of phone to create out as my infographic design, people might have the tendency to get ‘reminded’ of something.

• This is the reason on why I would want to use phone templates. Because the concerns of the crimes is something that all should be reminded of, and this is an important issue where it will affect our loved ones as well.

• Hence, my rational about using phone template as a design to remind the people of something, do works too.

• So now what I have to do is to sketch out my ideas that I have in mind and built them up.
