IntroductionMarket Research at the IMnI

IMnI provides the most comprehensive and accurate manganese industry market research available.

Circulated on a monthly basis, IMnI’s reports examine both production and consumption, and the balance between the two, looking at the industry from both sides of the supply demand equation. The primary objective of these reports is to offer an analysis of the immediate past, which can provide the basis for Members to develop a greater understanding of their business.

The IMnI Executive Director Aloys d’Harambure examines manganese ore and alloy consumption as they relate to the steel industry with the application of an industry model. This systematic approach provides increased accuracy and a systematic approach to better understand and anticipate changes in the industry. A detailed analysis of IMnI data is also published on a monthly basis.

IMnI also issues monthly trade matrices for Mn Ore, Alloys, EMM and EMD, a steel production report, and publishes a list of current manganese producers and future manganese projects.

Global production of silico-manganese increased for a fourth consecutive year in 2019, up by 13% from 2018 to 18 million mt, although steel production expanded by only 2.2% last year. Among the top 10 producers of SiMn, only China, Malaysia and South Africa saw a growth in output last year, while supply from other countries contracted from the previous year. China now accounts for 69% of the global supply.

After rising in 2017 and 2018, global high-carbon ferro-manganese production remained stable last year around 4.4 million mt (-0.1% from 2018), with higher output in China, India and Japan compensating production cuts in Malaysia, Russia, South Korea, South Africa, Australia, Ukraine, and France.

Refined Ferromanganese (Ref FeMn)

Global refined ferro-manganese supply declined by 14% in 2019 from the previous year, to 1.4 million mt. Growing output in South Korea, South Africa and the USA was offset by reduced supply from China, Norway, Japan, India, Mexico and Brazil.

Manganese ore

The world’s output of manganese ore increased in 2019 for the third consecutive year, on rising demand from manganese alloy smelters. Mn miners produced 22.5 million mt (Mn contained) last year, equivalent to 64.2 million wet mt, with an average ore grade of 35% Mn. Miners increased output by 8% or 1.6 million mt Mn units from 2018, reaching a new record high. The additional supply mostly came from South Africa, Gabon, Brazil, Ghana and Ivory Coast, driven by China’s demand, where Mn consumption increased by 14% in 2019 from last year.

Manganese Metal

After a sharp fall in 2018, global manganese metal production recovered last year, reaching 1.62 million mt (+4% from 2018), on rising supply in China (+2% to 1.53 million mt) and in the rest of world (+94% YoY), as Qingshan’s new EMM plant in Indonesia ramped up production to 50k mt/year. China now represents 94% of global Mn metal output.

Manganese Dioxide

Global production of electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) increased in 2019 to around 455,000 mt according to data collected by the International Manganese Institute from CITIC Dameng, Tosoh and other producers. This 9% YoY increase was only due to China (+14% YoY), while EMD production in the rest of the world contracted by 1% compared to 2018. Looking at the different grades, global output of Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO) grade EMD increased by 25% from 2018, Alkaline & other (Li-primary) grade EMD production expanded by 10% in 2019, while Carbon-zinc (C-Zn) grade EMD production contracted by 2% last year. China now accounts for 75% of global EMD supply, compared to just 66% in 2016.

Manganese Sulphate(MSM or MnSO4)

Global production of manganese sulphate (MSM or MnSO4) increased by 8% in 2019 to almost 542,000 mt, according to data collected by the International Manganese Institute from CITIC Dameng and other producers. The growth is driven by rising output in China (+17% YoY) and India (+11% YoY), while MnSO4 production in the rest of the world declined by 22% from the previous year. Looking at the different grades, global output for regular MnSO4 increased by 19% from 2018, while high-purity MnSO4 production dropped by 25% last year from 2018. China now accounts for 69% of global Mn sulphate output, compared to just 64% in 2018.
