Health Impacts of Climate Change in Australia(points – still need to be approved by AMSA,
Alice is on it)
1. Climate Change causes heat related illnesses. In the last five decades there has been
a double in recorded hot days in Australia[1]. This heat stress forces a substantial
pressure on our bodies leading to conditions such as lethargy and heat stroke.
2. Climate Change induces environmental settings that cause death. The December
2010 and January 2011 flooding in Queensland killed 35 people and affected
approximately 2.5 million people [2]. Attributed to CC reference needed
3. Climate Change causes an increase in food-borne diseases. Data obtained from the
capital cities of Australia from 1991 to 2001 have shown that the rate of food-borne
diseases rise with the average temperature [3].
4. Climate Change affects psychological health. During South Australian heat waves
there has been a marked increase, of approximately 7% in admissions of mental,
cognitive and behavioural disorders [4].
5. Climate Change causes mental stress. Australians have a close relationship to its
unique landscapes with those who live on the land. Relocation caused by natural
hazards will cause a loss of sense of place and increase mental and emotional
pressures. This is of particular concern to the Indigenous population of Australia that
has close spiritual ties to particular environmental regions [5].
