Usufacturing – making products for personal use

Crude tools and local materials were used to make one of a kind items by hand.

Over time people started to specialize.

Specialization continued and became concentrated into factories.

machines are used to manufacture products

Factories caused movement from farms to the factories. This created cities, resulting in an industrialized society.

Industrialized Society- society based on technology and production of goods or manufacturing

Interchangeable Parts- like parts of an assembly are identical allowing them to be interchanged - 2nd major production era in history

Industrial Revolution

- when machine-based manufacturing economies began

- manual labor and animal–based economies became less prevalent

- 3rd major production era in history

- A period from the 18th to the 19th century

- It started with the mechanization of the textile industries, the development of iron-making techniques and the increased use of refined coal.

Assembly Line (Production Line)- process in which parts or products

are created in a sequential manner- 4th major era of production- made famous by Henry Ford between 1908-1915- was a culmination of the developments of the 1800’s such as jigs, fixtures, and machine tools

Creates products faster and cheaper.

Automation- the use of control systems and information technologies reducing the need for human intervention- 5th major era of production - greatly reduces the need for human

skill requirements
