Reminder: Digital Initiatives Program Guiding Principles
Digital Initiatives
1. We build services, not products
2. We carefully weigh when to Build versus Buy versus Borrow
3. We develop modular services, not monolithic systems
4. We develop for change
5. We don’t keep everything forever
6. We build in assessment
7. We focus on the user
8. We work with partners
9. We embrace research as a core, fundamental value
10. We strive to stay grounded in the real world
11. We are driven by standards
Why did we do this?

Where are we now?

IMPLEMENTATION OF A MODERN DIGITAL LIBRARY AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES – White Paper
Digital Initiatives
• White Paper was created with the following goals in mind:• Identify the current environment in which we work
• Lay out a vision for the future
• Identify gaps and their impacts
• Recommend a path forward.

Digital Library Core Components Matrix
Access
Preservation
Content Selection/Management
Interoperability
Learning to speak the same language
Digital Initiatives
• We need to:
• Create a shared language and vocabulary around the digital library
• Define key actions/functions within these core components
• Learn to evaluate projects and programs to ensure that they support these high
level concepts; and when necessary adapt our processes
• Recognize the interdependency of each of these components to the other.
• i.e., preservation suffers without great metadata;
Core Component: Access
Digital Initiatives
• Definition: Drivers for making decisions to optimize discovery and
use of digital content.• Metadata
• Discovery
• Information Retrieval
• User Experience
Core Component: Content Management
Digital Initiatives
• Definition: Drivers for making decisions on locally digitized or born
digital content from Ohio State University or its partners. • Selection
• Rights Management
• Distributed Access
• Publishing
Core Component: Preservation
Digital Initiatives
• Definition: Drivers for making decisions that optimize retention,
integrity, and migration of digital content under the OSUL’s custodial
control.• Data Audits
• Distributed Storage
• Rights Management
• Data Migration
• Preservation
• Master Objects Repository
Core Component: Interoperability
Digital Initiatives
• Definition: Drivers for making decisions and supporting the
integration of OSUL content and services both within the Libraries as
well as with on and off campus partners. • Mediation
• Communication Protocols
• Commerce

Identified Gaps
Digital Initiatives
• Lack of integration support which has major impacts related to access and
discovery
• As an organization, how we preserve our digital content is frightening
• There are a lack of clear roles (who does what)
• Need to have a serious discussion around comprehensive discovery and who our
primary audience that we are try to serve – answers that have significant
implications in not only discovery, but how OSUL presents itself to our community
• Workflow/processing challenges
Where are we going?
Digital Initiatives
Key Recommendations from the White Paper
Digital Initiatives
• Its time for a culture shift• In how we think (i.e., away from departments and units to organizationally)
• This thinking needs to permeate everything that we do and be reflected throughout our
policies and workflows.
• Focus on building local knowledge, buy-in, and investment• Around preservation, the digital initiatives principles, in support staff as we work through
fundamental shifts in how we create and maintain OSUL’s digital presence.
• Identify and empower for change• Identifying who is responsible for crafting organizational policies
• Be purposeful as we move forward; while developing a culture that values
curiosity and supports innovative approaches.
So what does this mean for Library
Digital Initiatives
• New potential partnerships• With shared communities of practice
• With large national and international organizations redefining access to collections
• Opportunities• For new research
• To Educate
• To engage with new partners
Some immediate impacts
Digital Initiatives
1. This work is spurring discussions at other institutions
2. Development of a Metadata Working Group
3. Expansion of the Digital Reformatting Working Group’s Charge
4. Investigation of the Libraries’ Master Objects Repository and how the
Libraries can do preservation better
5. Moving in new directions• As Mentioned in the General Meeting, the implementation of Fedora,
ArchivesSpace, and the Hydra Framework.
