“MAKE A DIFFERENCE”

The Dog Days of Summer are behind us and this weekend we celebrate the end

of the season. With all the fires, smoke, heat and flooding I hope everyone can

find something to celebrate. I am still trying to celebrate catching a big fish, but I take heart as I

remember that I caught my one and only fish last year the day after Labor Day. Never give up

hope.

One more week of cool coastal weather and Lynn and I return to triple digits and resume our club

visitations. I am looking forward to hanging with my 4C-1 Lions again.

This month I want to talk a bit about the MD-4 Student Speaker competition. The Student Speak-

er Foundation has been doing this for 80 years. The students who compete earn decent money to

help defray their college expenses. For some students it makes the difference in whether or not

they get to attend college.

Two things I would like to point out to 4C-1 Lions Clubs. First, only five clubs in our district have

sent in for their (free if you order before October 1) packet from the MD-4 office. A quick call to

Cass Cara and you can score your own packet…Order online at WWW.md4.org .Every club that

has a high school in their area should afford the opportunity to those students to win some schol-

arship monies. We will be having a discussion at our District meeting in Loma Rica on how to

hold your own competition.

The other item is our support of the Student Speaker Foundation. It has dropped drastically over

the last couple of years. Right now, the winner from our district wins approximately $5000. Last

year we raised a little over $1000. I think we can do better than that, my fellow Lions. Lets talk

about it in our clubs and see if we can donate some more this year.

Our meeting at the end of September has a focus on Diabetes and how each club can get involved

in this service area. Also, we will be celebrating our newest members so try to stop in for a visit.

Hope to see you in Loma Rica!

DG Marianne

an IRC 501(c)(3) Corporation #81-2850129

September 2017 - Lions of District 4C-1,

I am excited about the tremendous progress the California Lions Foundation (CLF) has made in the short

time since its formation. I would love to share the story with your club.

The foundation was created a little over a year ago, and it was eligible to start taking donations only since

last October. CLF’s purpose is to provide matching grants from $500 - $10,000 to California Lions Clubs for

humanitarian, vision, environmental, disaster relief, and other projects that serve their communities. ALL

monies raised go back into California communities through our Lions clubs.

Let me share with you our story and progress to date by key functional area.

Fundraising & Recognition (Chair: VDG Dave Hubbard)

• A founder program has been established for recognizing material donations made by 12/31/17. The

founder program includes recognition for founding members, clubs and districts to assist in meeting

the initial goal of raising $250,000 by the end of this year. A founding member is one who donates

$1,000 as a Fukushima Fellow. A founding club is one that donates $5,000, whether it be from the

club or five individual Lions from the club who donate. A founding district is one that donates

$5,000 from its district treasury.

• Donations to date exceed $80,000. There are four founding clubs and one founding district.

• An additional fellow has been established for $2,500 in honor of Reginald Harris who was instrument al in establishing many of the Lions clubs formed in California between 1925 – 1958.

• The respected nation-wide CARS charitable donation outlet has been retained to accept donations of automobile, boats, RVs and motor homes. Grants (Chair: PDG Phyllis Rogers)

• Grant requests will be a two-step process – Initially it will be reviewed by the grants committee for sufficiency of the application and whether it falls within the scope of CLF. Then it will be referred to the Executive Committee for approval of requests $2,500 and under, or to the full board for above $2,500.

• Once we have reached $250,000 in donations grant requests will be considered. Publicity (Chair: Lion Tina Tsai

• A new tri-fold promotional brochure has been developed and is attached.

• A web site and PowerPoint have been developed. Policy/Strategic Planning/Bylaws/Legal (Chair: Gil Smith)

• IRS, FTB and Cal AG approvals have been received, thereby completing all the initial approvals need ed.

Page 4: IMPORTANT ******* - Constant Contactfiles.constantcontact.com/3e78a426201/d4d1c063-9bdd-4622-9994-… · Lion Aaron Chatfield Yuba City Peach Bowl Lions Cabinet Chaplin Lion Karen

Budget, Finance & Investment Management (Chair: CC/PDG Rob Manning)

• Two checking accounts have been set up at Wells Fargo.

• A brokerage account has also been established to receive stock donations. The gift of appreciated stock is a financially astute way to give – you get the full market value of the stock as a tax deductible donation without paying any capital gains tax on the appreciation in value. District Level Committees (Chair: PDG Lita Guidotti)

• A statement of benefits for CLF has been developed. Executive Committee (PDG Gil Smith, PDG Alb erto Montes de Oca, DG Marianne Keesee, CC/PDG Rob Manning))

• As needed, the EC has taken on an expanded role between meetings.

Activities, directions, functions that will be addressed in the near future include the following:

• A plan for gaining corporate sponsors is under development.

• The criteria for accepting designated donations is under development. A designated donation is one that the donor designates where and/or how the funds are to be utilized. There are no matching funds criteria for designated donations.

Again thank you to all Lions who have helped, supported and guided CLF in our formative year of develop-

ment. For more information please visit our website www.CaliforniaLionsFoundation.org

Leading Lions—Direction

Where are you taking your Lions Life? Leadership is not for those who go along for the

ride. You either have to be driving or supporting your leader with partnership and a pas-

sion for service. A leader is always trying to find ways to improve themselves, their fellow

officers and club members.

We are at the point for Club elections and the opportunity to step into new and exciting

challenges. What would you like to do or have you been asked to do. Those who ask you

to take on a roll are complimenting you. They want you to fill a position you are ready for.

At the coming District 4-C1 Convention, your club delegates will be voting for persons to

fill the district level leadership positions, as well as making decisions on budget and con-

stitutional issues. I encourage each of your club boards and memberships to provide di-

rection to your delegates. They should not have to make these decisions themselves.

We are all searching for direction in some way. What should I do? How can I help? Who

can I help? Who can we offer service? I recommend that you either be a helper or ask for

help in getting there. Your leadership can both use your help and want to help you find

your own direction.

BLUE SKIES AND TAILWINDS

VDG Sue Kerr

August was my month to travel! Started with a trip to Sacramento to attend the Organizational Coun-

cil of Governors Meeting. C5 put on a great meeting with a Western theme. The highlight was Satur-

day’s dinner; we learned to line dance. What a lot of fun we had bumbling about trying to remember

the steps and trying not to get tangled up with the rest of the dancers. We had business to attend to,

but we also had fun. Lions are about fun as we serve. Our service should be joyful and inclusive.

Don’t let anyone stand in a corner, make them get up and dance!

From Sacramento, I left for Baltimore to see my eldest son and his family. Had a few relaxing days in

Lutherville (their home town) and then I joined the family for a trip down to Jacksonville, Florida.

From here we spent five nights on a cruise ship that made a couple of stops in the Bahamas. I only get

to visit this part of my family once a year, so this was a special time with grandkids. Our Lions family

is special even if we only see some on occasion. When we get together it is like we saw them yester-

day. Family reunions are like that, a time to catch up and plan for the next time we will get together.

I was home for one day. My sister and nephew joined up with me in Redding and we headed north to

Portland, Oregon to see my youngest son and daughter-in-law (also two grand dogs and a grand cat).

Spent a day there and then trekked to Matolius, outside of Madras, to view the total eclipse. We were

very lucky to get a grassy spot to camp. It was away from the madness of the main celebration at the

Madras Airport. There is absolutely no way to explain the magic and wonder of a full eclipse of the

sun. The temperature drops, and at totality it is dark enough to see Venus in the sky and there was a

360 degree, pink sunset all around us. It was AWESOME!! We had a very long day getting back to

Portland, did some more sight-seeing, waved good-bye and got back home on the 23rd. Whew! A

whirlwind month.

This next two years will be a whirlwind of Lions service. I am already signed up for the USA/Canada

forum, so back to Portland on the 20th of September. Before that I will be making visits to clubs with

DG Marianne. Right now, a lot of clubs are involved with service in areas of fires and sending aide to

Houston. It is a time to think of making club and personal contributions to LCIF. LCIF is our main

arm for disaster relief. I know we all join in prayers for those who have lost homes and loved ones dur-

ing these disasters in our local areas as well as across the country and internationally. As Lions “We

Serve”.

GRIP IT AND RIP IT!

Having just completed a physical move of my business, this month’s article finds me a tad bit out of

sorts. During the move, which was done in record time considering all of the “stuff” I needed moved.

Owning a Trophy Shop requires a lot of small pieces and parts, but a lot of large furniture and equip-

ment. I was very fortunate to have the assistance of some of our wonderful Lion’s family for this move.

(You know who you are, and THANK YOU!!!)

Our We Serve motto was in full operational mode. It may not have been considered a service project

but the assistance was so very appreciated and needed. The 4 of us managed to complete the move in a

weekend. In itself, that says something about the determination of all involved.

Now that my personal thanks are out of the way, I want to address you, as the wonderful members of

this family we call Lions.

Service is what we do….how many times have we heard that statement?!? We need to always remem-

ber that people may need our help but we also need to help ourselves from time to time. I lost a friend

over this past weekend very suddenly and the outpouring of love and support to her family has been

amazing. (These are not Lions by the way, but the hope that they may be is ever on my mind) Honest-

ly, I am getting to the point of my article eventually….

As a Lion, I find reaching out for assistance to be especially challenging, as I am the one usually giving

that assistance. We need to remember that everyone needs help from time to time and being in a ser-

vice organization does not preclude us from that fact. I urge you all to not be afraid to ask for help

when it is needed.

Please continue to serve your communities, but be good to yourselves in the process. Remember others

are going through things we may know nothing about and bringing them into the fold of Lions may

just be what they are in need of at this time.

Thank you for your support and service.

I am so ready for the end of the fire season. This one has been really bad so far, and at this point it has gotten worse. I hope and pray for those who are in the areas that are being affected by the current fires, and since these articles are hopefully about leadership, I will add that I am very proud and thankful for the leadership of those we have in our new Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee. These Lions are working at staying on top of these disasters and at being prepared to respond to them as needed. I love it when we, as Lions, come together to re-spond and be of service to others when these needs arise and our new committee is doing just that. Our MD4 Leadership Institute for Northern California is coming up January 19 to 22, 2018, and will be held in Fairfield, CA. The Southern California Institute will be held March 9 to 11, 2018 and will be held in Ontario right next to the airport. These are the institutes that are put on by the GLT committee here in California for our own Lions, and they are excellent. We in 4-C1 have a record of typically having a large number of Lions attending these institutes. You may already know this, but Ilga and I, along with IPDG Jamie and 2nd VDG Elisa (along with a few others from our District) graduated from the same MD4 Leadership Institute, which was the last one held at Harris Ranch. I will hopefully have forms for these at the District Meeting this month. Also, Lions Clubs International has two of their Leadership Institutes coming up very soon. The Emerging Lions Leadership Institute (ELLI) and the Advanced Lions Leadership Institute (ALLI) are going to be held concurrently in Denver, Colorado from November 11 – 13, 2017. The ELLI is for upcoming leaders in our organization who have not yet been a club President. The ALLI is for those who are a little further along, typically 2nd Vice District Governors or others who wish to have some more leadership training, such as Zone or Region Chairs. The good news is that we have a stipend fund designated in our District Budget to help offset the cost of our MD4 Institutes, and there is also a stipend designated for the 2nd VDG to help with the ALLI expenses. The cost of the MD4 Institutes is $300.00, and then the room, supplies and meals are covered. The LCI cost is, I believe, $125 for the Institute, and you have to get yourself there. Once you have arrived, the room and meals are covered. These are all truly ex-cellent opportunities for Lions to learn how to excel. Also, I have the privilege of assisting PDG GMT Maggie Robeson in presenting a Guiding Lions seminar at our next District Meeting in Loma Rica Foothill’s clubhouse on Saturday, September 30, at 10:45am. The key points of this, beyond the fact that our District needs more Guiding Li-ons, is that this is typically a 2 hour seminar, and we will be crunching it into 1 hour, hopefully with time for you to take the workbook test. This is a great opportunity to become one of us who helps out with new clubs or smaller clubs in need. I hope to see you there. PDG Aron Whealy From Modoc…”Where The West Still Lives”

Because 2018 is the 50th Anniversary of the start of LCIF, MD-4’s

goal for this year will be $500,000 which is slightly higher than

normal. Our Multiple District was again #1 in donations to LCIF

in our LCI Constitutional Area (5th year in a row!) This is some-

thing to be proud of.

MD-4 now has 33 100% Contributing Member clubs, up from 10

last year. Our District has Fort Jones, Gridley and Scott

Valley Lions clubs as 100% clubs. YOUR club could join this ex-

alted group by collecting $20 per member to send to LCIF. Re-

member to also send a list of each individual club member so

that it counts as a 100% Participation donation. Each member

will then receive a personal thank you from this year’s LCIF

Chairman, Immediate Past International President Bob Corlew

along with a bronze LCIF pin. Also, the donation counts toward

your club’s next Melvin Jones Fellowship. If you need help with

the paperwork for becoming a 100% club, please let me know at

[email protected].

At our Foothill meeting September 30, I will be selling the new

LCIF pins - gold pins are $100, silver are $50 and bronze are $20.

Again, every donation counts toward your personal Melvin Jones.

Tickets for our District Melvin Jones Raffle will be sold at the

Foothill meeting. Hopefully, we will sell enough to draw a new

winner.

Good morning Lions of District 4-C1.

Many Lions and Lions Clubs in California have expressed interest in supporting the relief effort

for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. We have been asked to share the following message from

Immediate Past International Director Howard Hudson which provides information on how to

help.

"To the Lions of California:

Over the past few days, we have all been reading and hearing about the devastation and trage-

dy that is ongoing in Texas especially around the Houston area. This morning I talked with ID

Sam Lindsey, our International Director who is from Texas. He assured me that he and his

wife Jodye are fine as is the Texas Lions Camp. However, those in southern and eastern Tex-

as are suffering greatly. LCIF has already sent $100,000 in relief funds. But the need is so

much greater. He said that while it may seem like a good idea to send donations directly to

clubs there in Texas or even the Texas Foundation, if anyone is making a donation toward

these relief efforts, it is far better to channel your donations through LCIF which is equipped to

handle disaster response.

As Lions we are always concerned about the humanitarian efforts to which we are drawn. And

this is a disaster here in our own country where there is tremendous need. Please consider the

blessings we have and share those blessings with those in need. And pray for comfort and aid

for those residents of the areas stricken by Hurricane Harvey. Director Lindsey said that the

need will continue for quite some time. As residents of California, we have been recipients of

financial aid from Lions and from LCIF when disaster has struck. So, now is a time when we

can give back and share.

IPID Howard Hudson"

Sutter Lions Clubs Support the Arts

Local Lions Club members thoroughly

enjoyed a performance of

The Wizard of Oz at The Acting Company on

August 6, 2017.

The outing was organized by the Sutter Lions

Club and was also attended by

members of Gridley and Peach Bowl Lions

Clubs.

The cast was spectacular and received a deserved standing ovation.

This was the first time many in the clubs had attended a performance

at our local gem of a theater (The Acting Company); it surely won’t be their last!

The Passing of the Gavel

On Tuesday, June 17, 2017 the Forest Ranch Lions Club held their annual In-

stallation of club officers’ ceremony. The high point of the evening was the

passing of the gavel from former Lion President Larry Marcum to new Lion

President Rebecca Haskitt (aka Becky). The conductor of ceremony was visit-

ing Past District Governor Skip O’Brien, as pictured far left in club officer’s

group photo. Pictured next is President Lion Becky Haskitt, 1st VP Lion Rich

PEACE POSTER CONTEST Challenge

“The Future of Peace”

As District Governor last year, I was very pleased to have some Lions Clubs who

haven’t submitted a Peace Poster before, participate in the Peace Poster Contest.

This year as the North Butte Region Chair, I like to throw down the gauntlet and

challenge the Clubs in the Region to submit a Peace Poster. Did you know that in

the Lassen Region, posters drawn by the Redding School of the Arts are split be-

tween 5 Clubs for each to choose a winner and that many times in the past the

winning Poster has been sponsored by one of these Clubs? I think that the North

Butte Region must have some equally talented youth, who would love the chance

to express their concept of what this year’s theme, “The Future of Peace” means

to them. As a Peace Poster Co-Chairperson for my Club more than once, I can at-

test that the good feelings of honoring and presenting an award the 1st

, 2nd

and 3rd

place winners are immeasurable. You might have the opportunity to receive a gi-

ant hug from a 2nd

place finisher like I had. Don’t know how to get started? Its’

easy, just search the Lions Club International Website for a wealth of information.

Here you will find the contest rules and some suggestions to publicize the con-

test. You have until October 1st

to order the Peace Poster Kit from the LCI Store.

The link for this is: members.lionsclubs.org/EN/serve/other-ways-to-serve/

contests/peace-poster-contest/index.php. Be sure to “think outside the box”, find

children who are home schooled, and put a flyer in your churches bulletin board

or in your public library. So, won’t you join me in throwing a submission from

your Club into the ring, sending a winning Peace Poster to DG Marianne Keesee

by November 15, 2017?
