Last year Albert Park College made a promise to deliver a high quality classical music program for our students. So it’s nice to be able to report that we’ve delivered on that promise in the most impressive way possible by holding our first public performance with some of the finest young musicians in the nation at the Australian National Academy of Music.

On Sunday 14 August, 26 of our students from our classical music program took part in ANAM’s annual Open Day by performing a concerto for flute and harp by Mozart alongside some of ANAM’s students under the direction of its conductor Louise Godwin.

even more impressively, the students worked with ANAM composers to develop their own interpretation of the piece, giving it several modern twists. In one swoop, we displayed a number of our school’s most important philosophical principles: to perform at the highest levels in public; to display creativity in everything we do; to get the right balance of tradition and modernity; and to form strong partnerships with the community.

The performance itself was the culmination of an exciting two weeks of musical excitement at the school, as ANAM musicians, our own music students and our seven music teachers took over the entire top floor of the school to compose and practise their performance piece. When it comes to school musical programs it simply doesn’t get much better.

Student SuperviSion before and after School Parents are reminded that the college is open to students from 8.30am until 4.30pm each day and staff are on site between these times to supervise students. We request that parents drop off and collect students within these times, to ensure that they are safe and adequately supervised at all times. Students who arrive early to attend the Basketball Academy will be supervised by the Academy staff. We thank you for your cooperation.

Our school music program is going from strength to strength. Of our 150 year-7 students, 90 are members of our music program, which, as you know, has a major focus on classical instruments and composition. In most schools, year-7 students – including some who have been playing instruments or singing for just six months – would seldom get the chance to give public performances to such a large audience in such a grand venue. It’s a fantastic tribute to our great music teachers and the students themselves that they were able to pull it off with such aplomb. everyone came out of the performance with a mixture of exaltation and tiredness – which is how all great art is made.

Special thanks for setting up this creative endeavour must go to our inspirational school music director, Andrew Swainston. Andrew is a music education lecturer at the University of Melbourne and is currently chair of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Society of Music educators. That we can attract such outstanding teaching talent to the school is a great sign of what lies ahead.

Next year our music program will double and then continue to grow year-on-year. So if this is what our music program can do in its first year of operation, imagine what will be possible in the future.

AUGUST 2011 – ISSUe 05 3apc’S french finaliStS!Our three APC finalists in the Alliance Française de Melbourne Competition, Naomi Omenihu, Graydon Cannavan-Forbes and Ethan McDonald, have competed in the state finals 6 August and we’re now awaiting thier results.

The finals were held at Alliance Française in St Kilda on Saturday 6 August. Each competitor was given a two-minute time slot in which to recite a French poem. Judges were assessing their accent and intonation.

French Teacher, Ms Patience says, “While there were some pre-competition jitters (mainly on my behalf!), Naomi, Graydon and ethan remained calm and competed very well on the day. We should know how they went in late September. I’d like to thank the parents, Celia, Paula and Christine, for their support on the day.”

L-R: Ms Patience (French Teacher), Ethan McDonald, Naomi Omenihu and

Graydon Cannavan-Forbes at Alliance Française.

AUGUST 2011 – ISSUe 05 4andrea coote’S viSit On June 17, MP Andrea Coote visited Albert Park College to see the new school in action. Her tour included classroom visits and a meeting with Principal Steve Cook.

Mrs Coote reported to parliament on her visit and has kindly provided us with a copy of her thoughts.

AUGUST 2011 – ISSUe 05 5Dear Parents and Carers

We would like to share with you our pleasure in providing the first (of many we hope) Trivia night held by APC Families.

As you can well imagine, an evening like this takes many hands to accomplish, so to everyone that helped with this venture, we sincerely thank you.

The night was successful on so many levels.

We had a fantastic response from Albert Park College parents and carers, as well as having the opportunity to host the evening to parents whose children will be attending the school next year.

The sponsorship we had from our local traders was absolutely outstanding, and we would like to formally mention them here and encourage you to support them in their local businesses.

Donations were received from:

One of the main purposes of the evening was to raise funds for the school, and we are very excited to let you know we raised $8000!

All these funds will go directly back into making the school an even better place for our children to attend. Over the coming weeks we will be discussing with Steve Cook options to best utilise this money and will let you know once we finalise.

Our last (but by no means the least) triumph we would like to celebrate is the amount of fun that was had by all. This made for a very special evening - to see people engaging and generally having a good time within our school community.

Thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at the Art Show on 21 & 22 October.

AUGUST 2011 – ISSUe 05 6upcoming eventS in the viSual artSSeptember is a busy month for the Art students at Albert Park College! On September 7, a group of Art students will visit the NGVI to take part in a combined gallery visit and iPad trial. The National Gallery are exploring ways of introducing the iPad into their educational programs, so we are excited to be able to partner them in this endeavour.

Later in September, we will be visiting ACCA, to view their Yael Bartana and David Rosetzky exhibition and participate in a workshop on the theme of ‘Identity’. Again, our students will be working with their iPads to create images reflecting themselves. Work from our past visit to ACCA is currently on display in the college.

We are delighted that our Art and Music Captains have been asked to assist at Gasworks Park as they host ‘Morning Music’ for our local elderly community. We know that our student leaders enjoy the opportunity to work with others and take pride in the work they do on behalf of the college. In October, we will further develop our relationship with Gasworks Park as we tour their studios and engage in some artistic activities designed specifically for our students.

Finally, we will be bidding farewell to our Artist in Residence, John Meade, who will finish his formal work at the College in September. John’s involvement in the Art area has been much appreciated, giving us a real insight into the life of a practising artist at work. We look forward to unveiling the sculpture that he and our students have been creating at the Art Show on October 21.

The Albert Park College Art Competition was run to procure an image to advertise the Art Show. The winner received a cash prize and passes to the NGV.

The image will be used on all advertising for the Art Show with the name of the winning artist credited as well. You will be able to view this work at the Albert Park College Art Show to be held on Friday and Saturday October 21st and 22nd.

Congratulations to the winner, Lisa Sewards with her ink drawing ‘Lollypops’ (right). This image is now featured on the Art Show poster. Running a close second in the Art Competition was Ava Thornley, a highly talented Year 7 student at Albert Park College. Her work is now proudly displayed in the Albert Park College foyer.

The following images were entered into the Art Competition and we have reproduced them today for your enjoyment. Thank you to all the artists who participated in the competition.
