Happy New Year! Entering a new year brings hope for new goals, fresh ideas, and plans to improve. The one constant from one year to the next is change; it is inevitable. As we enter 2017, we welcome some new fac-ulty members. A big welcome is extended to Dr. Chyrisse Tabone, Chem-istry and AP Environmental teacher, and Chris Hochman, Physics teach-er. As you may know, Mr. Allen is now serving as Assistant Principal and is excited to be serving in this new leadership role. We bid a fond farewell to Ms. Richards, Spanish teacher, who will be moving abroad, and Mrs.
Bondoc, Chemistry and AP Environmental teacher, who will be moving closer to home. A common purpose among all faculty and staff, new and current, is to further student achievement and support student success. On behalf of the BDCHS faculty, staff, and board, I wish you all a safe, prosperous New Year filled with opportunities and success. Your Principal, Kristine Bennett

We at Brooks DeBartolo recently had two of our very own Phoenix students play on the Lacrosse All-Star Team. Aaron #48 and Joshua #47 Hendricks played in the Dick's Sporting Goods Na-tional Lacrosse Tournament of Champions in Wesley Chapel during the holiday break against nationally recognized lacrosse players. They will begin their season at Wharton High School in January.

Counselor Connection With the start of a new semester and year, it is critical that students look back on semester 1 and develop a plan for maintaining or improving one’s academic standing in each class. It is important to develop S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, time-bound) goals in rela-tion to finishing this school year strong and preparing for college and career. The following are key items students should be focusing on:
9th Grade: Reflect on semester 1 performance, particularly for time management, homework
completion, and studying. Develop strategies for improving in each of these areas. 10
th Grade: Now that ~50% of the grades are complete that colleges will look at when the stu-dent applies in grade 12, compare how previous performance aligns with future goals and make adjustments as needed.
11th Grade: Plan to take the SAT and/or ACT this semester and register. In order to avoid late registration fees, students should register at least 5 weeks prior to the test date. Taking tests now will allow the student to see his/her scores earlier, compare them to college and scholarship requirements, and have time to prepare for further testing.
12th Grade: Don’t stop now! Colleges will continue checking grades. Communicate with teachers and counselors about courses of concern. Complete the FAFSA and Florida Fi-nancial Aid Application as soon as possible. Report any college and scholarship ac-ceptances to one’s school counselor.
Academic checklists for each grade may be viewed at http://bdchsstudentservices.weebly.com/academic-checklists.html
If a student earned an F semester grade in a course needed for graduation, that missing credit must be recovered as soon as possible. Refer to the Student Services Portal and the student’s school counselor for more information about credit recovery and recovery options: http://bdchsstudentservices.weebly.com/credit-recovery--grade-enhancement.html
